I live in Mei Foo for 1 year and been to Sportful more than 50 times, both early yum cha, lunch yum cha and dinner. In summary, early yum cha is excellent, dinner is very bad, and lunch is ok. Here are my experience.
Early yum cha (around 8-9am)
(+) The discount dim sim are under $10, only available in "early morning session". . The size/quality is same as full price and they rotate the discount dim sim about once every week. (About 10 to 15 choices). Recommend go earler in the morning as they may be sold out. Mainly grandmum and dad go this early.
(+) Much cleaner environment than FU LAM across the road and big simles waitresses.
(+) The tea is great. Not using cheaper tea leaves.
(-) The bowls and cups have dirts in about 50% of times.
DInner
(+) Some dishes are under $100 (about 20 on the menu) and good quality and size.
(-) But the manager will keep recommend you to order the expensive dishes instead, like the expensive fish, shark fin and abalone, and they never give up, so annoying (the managers in black colour suits, although may be it is the boss wanting them to do this, but still so annoying. Other lower grade staffs ok, hard working and friendly.
(-) Even when you are eating, the black suit manager comes to you and recommend you should "pre-order" this and that (like shark fins) for next time....Just never gives up. Personally, I find this interuptive and a little offensive..
(-) When we take their "recommendations" --> $350 to $500 per person, is very easy.
(-) When we stick to the budget, $150 per person. But we had to suffer the "black face" of the black suit manager. Making me feel I don't belong to here.
(-) The black suit manager will show bigger smile to the person ordering the dishes (being the person likely to pay the bill). Little/No simles on others on the table. Actually, everytime, others on the table are given very little attention or even basic respect. Eg
- The black suit manager will come to your table to fill tea, sometimes to one person's cup only (the one who ordered the dishes, ie most likely to pay the bill) but not the others on the table.
- When we leave the restarant. The yellow suit lady at the front door will only say "thankyou and good bye" to the person who paid the bill but not others (don't know how they know who paid, but it is true experience every time).
- They make me feel that they only care about the person who is paying...
Oh well, we are all customers aren't we?
(+) Anyway, the chef is good, all dishes arrives on time and good quality and fair size.
(+) Basic service: changing dishes, filling water are good (much better than my exerience in FU LAM in Lai Chi Kok). Thanks to the pink shirt waitresses (the lower grade staffs)
Lunch
Dim sim quality is excellent.
Service is somewhere in between early yum cha (excellent) and dinner (poor).
Special recommendation is BBQ pork. Small dish but taste very nice, little fat.
