In the American South there's a colloquialism that something is so good that it will 'make you wanna slap your mama'. *

85 South doesn't evoke passion. It barely registers a shrug. Sure - relative to other American BBQ joints in HK, which are rarer than a hen's teeth **, it's a fine plate of 'cue. Objectively, it's a few fries (or chips) short of a happy meal. ***

The pulled pork was dry and slightly greasy, but had enough textural contrast to discern that it was likely from a large primal - with a bit of fat and a bit of lean. But flavor-wise so underwhelming that BBQ virgin would come away with the impression that Americans aren't fit to come close to a pig (or any other meat for that matter).

If you were to seek an authentic Carolina BBQ experience at 85 South, you may spend most of your meal recounting the things that are missing, rather than the things that are on your tray. Absent was a square of white bread, which is an essential component of Carolina 'cue, which is to be used as both a utensil and side dish. Sweet pickles, a classic palate cleanser, would have been welcomed to the party. Same goes for the smoke line (a tell tale sign that the meat has been cooked low and slow with actual charcoal or wood chips)?

To be fair, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear ****, and similarly no one comes to Hong Kong expecting good American BBQ. And to think that you could find good BBQ this far from home is about as good as a cat trying to bury a turd on a marble floor.*****
==============================
* This is to imply that in a fit of passion and reverence for something, one might resort to domestic violence on their mother for denying them of such pleasures.
** Doesn't exist as chickens do not have teeth
*** Coming up short / lacking
**** Can't make something out of nothing
***** A futile effort

Americans are a strange lot.

The bird, Mama Mia, was incredibly herby that I could not withdrawn myself but asked what else was in the marination. Turned out the herbiness was from the rice stuffings. The stuffing is called Filthy Rice which is a combination of sausage, onions and herbs. Dawn this filthy rice was tasty! I think I might had too many bowls of it that night.

As a result of their slow cooking method, the bird itself was utterly tender and juicy, even the white meats! Now we know no one has to fight for the dark meat at 85 South. Peaceful dinner it is.
For turkey sides and details, you can check my blog or 85 South website.

Despite this we ordered 2 pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and the "filthy rice." The pulled pork was extremely dry- granted I understand Carolina BBQ is all about the sauce, but even still, the pork was not tender and not even served hot.

The macaroni and cheese portion was just a single layer of macaroni (a small portion considering this was $60) and tasted a bit off.

The filthy rice which was supposed to have sausage and onions had some measly scraps of sausage and was served COMPLETELY COLD. They couldn't even give us the decency of popping the already dry rice and flavorless rice into the microwave?

We were completely put off by the entire experience and considered the meal a waste of money.

I have been coming here ever since they opened, pulled back (pun intended) time and time again by the thoughts of the pulled pork and ribs.

I always get the Big Boi plate cause, well, you can never have enough of a good thing.

Also, my personal feeling is that filling yourself  with a hamburger bun is a huge disservice to your stomach.

The Big Boi consists of ribs, pulled pork, cole slaw and fries.  The pulled pork is tender and juicy and even tastier when combined with the slaw and, my personal favorite, the vinegar based sauce.  The slaw is not what most people are used to (which is mayo based).  The southern style slaw is vinegar based and a fantastic complement to the pulled pork.

The ribs, once again, are different from what most people in the northeast are used to---these are dry rubbed.  There is a nice thick coating of the dry rub and when you pull the meat off the bone, one can really taste the time and care needed to cook them properly.

By far my favorite side is the hush puppies (which for non-americans is essentially a fried corn meal ball).  I cannot recommend the light and fluppy hush puppies enough (but only if you are eating in).  They are absolutely fantastic piping hot and doused with the vinegar based sauce.  The mac & cheese is also worth trying---any respectable southern joing will have decent mac & cheese.

Finally, I recently tried a new item on the menu---smoked chicken.  I was highly skeptical at first--expecting it to be bland and dry.  I could not have been more pleasantly suprised.  Not only was it not dry, it may have been the most succulent and moist chicken I have ever had (and I dont just mean, rotisserie or fried chicken---I am talking about any cooking method in any cuisine).  The chicken is effectively dripping juices as you take each bite---it is almost too moist (if there was ever such a thing). The rub they put on the chicken before smoking is essential to adding flavor to the most tender chicken in Hong Kong.

While it is great that they have american drinks such as Dr Pepper and A&W Root Beer, if you are going to have BBQ, ice cold beer is the only beverage to wash it all down with.  Lucky for you they have that too....

All in all, fantastic southern BBQ in the heart of HK and definitely worth the trip.

I've been coming to this place regularly since it opened last year. The care put into cooking each of their main ingredients is what sets it apart. The pulled pork is consistently juicy and has a great smoky taste. The pork ribs are nice and meaty. I've only had a small amount of the chicken, but what I had was great! The icing on the cake is the selection of home made sauces; you're sure to find one you love!Highly recommended!

I'm also a big fan of some of the roasted/rotisserie chicken joints in Hong Kong, but 85's chicken is somehow MORE juicy and LESS greasey than its roasted brethren, and is easily the best chicken I've had in town. For those feeling a litle less indulgent, the chicken is an excellent alternative to ribs and pulled pork (there's also pulled chicken now) and the sides compliment the chicken just as well as the porcine portion of the menu. The only negative thing about the chicken is that it forces you to decide between chicken and pork, and it's going to be a tough decision for some people. In any case, the added variety is a great thing.

One hot Saturday afternoon, we decided to check out 85 South after seeing an ad for it in a magazine. One person in my party had tried it via catering before, so we were all interested in checking it out. The sun drenched, up-hill trek from the mtr to the restaurant left us all a little tired, but inside the air-con was blasting and there was only one other customer inside. We were able to sit immediately.

Decor:
The decor is ok - very sparse. Concrete floors and walls, with some murals on the walls. There's some large wooden tables and benches to sit on, as well as a small bar area. Each table has a roll of paper towels and a bucket with ketchup and three different types of BBQ sauces. It really reminded me many places I have been to in the US. I only am rating it a three, because to me it seems like there is a lot of untapped potential as the current decorations are very bland and interesting.

Taste:
The BBQ is cooked in the style of North Carolina. Slow cooked, tender, and full of flavour. There were three different types of sauces available: a more "typical" BBQ sauce (the table favourite), a vinegar-BBQ sauce, and a honey mustard BBQ sauce. We all ordered the pulled pork and the ribs - all extremely tender and flavourful. I highly recommend the pulled pork. The meals also came with coleslaw and thick french fries. The coleslaw has a more sweet, vinegar like taste and I would say it was just ok, but dislike coleslaw in general. Everything else was extremely delicious and left everyone feeling full and happy.

Service:
The menu was posted on a blackboard at the counter where you order. After we ordered, they brought us our food. One of the workers, who I think was the manager, was extremely friendly. However when we were ordering, there was some confusion with the cashier about substituting a part of our order. We wanted to substitute the coleslaw for some baked-beans, but the cashier finally said we could only substitute the french fries for baked beans. We were confused about we could order, the cashier did help to explain it to us clearly and was unwilling to provide some basic customer service. That was a disappointment, because I was told the baked beans were delicious and I really wanted to try them but the full price for a side was too expensive for one person.

Value for money:
I feel the price for the meal was fair, but the price for the sides and drinks was too much. The drinks costs $20 for just a can (!!!) and $50 for a side order. They were extremely rigid about what sides we could substitute in a meal, which would cost an extra $20. For one person, $50 is just too much to get a side, especially if you're already ordering a meal. There should be more options about which items in the meal you can substitute. And perhaps some small and large side order options for different prices.

I highly recommend this restaurant if you want some delicious BBQ.

The menu was pretty simply with combinations of either pulled pork or ribs. We ended up choosing the Sandwich Tray which consisted of the BBQ sandwich+fries+drink, and the Rib Tray with ribs+slaw+fries+drink. Drinks include homemade lemonade, tea, juices, soda, and beer. Counter service only so we had to bus our own table.

The 3 homemade sauces in colorful bottles that caught my eye each with its own unique flavors. The yellow bottle is a mustard based sauce with a honey based sweetness. The red bottle is tomato based with a BBQ flavor. The clear bottle is vinegar based with a peppery taste. I tried all 3 of the sauces but I preferred the tomato based sauce over the others.

We collected our food from the counter when they were ready. The BBQ sandwich in the  Sandwich Tray ($85) was surprisingly scrumptious especially with the coleslaw slathered on top of the pulled pork. The pork was deliciously smoky while BBQ slaw definitely stole the show with its sweet yet tangy flavors.

The Rib Tray ($130) was very disappointing though! The ribs were pitifully dry and bony with very little meat to munch on. This dish was way overpriced at $130 for the portions. Even the homemade sauces couldn't save it.

Overall, the food was alright while the service left a lot to be desired. I mean I don't mind the counter service even though the prices are a bit high for this kind of fast food model. The staff could definitely be friendlier and more helpful especially for first timers. When we were ordering, the guy at the counter was really impatient and didn't want to answer our questions. When we asked him where to get the drinks, he just pointed before turning away aruptly. It just didn't make us feel welcomed and it's these little things that add up when one is deciding where to eat or not.

We had hopes, but not high ones, for 85 South and we were delighted with what we ate.  My wife is American and sometimes she craves the food of her homeland.  We decided to give 85 South a try for some good ole comforting BBQ.

The place is a small restaurant with counter service and a limited menu (a good sign).  We ordered a Big Boi with no fries (all slaw), a side of mac 'n' cheese and a beer.

The beer was OK, served in a dixie cup, it was all American (the beer was actually Australian).  We collected our food from the counter and sat at a picnic-style bench.  The mac 'n' cheese was pretty good, not a mind blower, but it doesn't have to be.  It was creamy, cheesy and stuck to your ribs.  Just what was called for.

The Big Boi was barbecue slaw (a new one on us), pulled pork and ribs.  The slaw was good, but the meat was the master of the dish.  The ribs were pretty good and cooked well.  They came away from the bone, but didn't fall off.  Basically you could bite through the meat without dragging the rest off with it.  The pulled pork was tender, juicy and flavourful.  These delicious things were best accompanied by the house sauces.  All were good, but the vinegar based hot sauce was the best (to our mind), followed closely by the tomato based one.  The vinegar based sauce is the most authentic North Carolina accompaniment.

So, to sum up.  The BBQ at 85 South is pretty good.  OK, in the USA, you can get better, but not in Hong Kong.  It is original, as authentic as it can be and satisfying.  We will return to get some more from the cradle of cue.

Filthy Rice($50)

First off, I was super excited about trying this place out. Being a Canadian expat, any familiar food is always welcoming especially when you feel a bit home sick. Unfortunately, the customer service was so disappointing that I had to open an account to share my experience.
Let's start with the good: The interior design was very trendy, and the artwork on the walls was very fitting for the size and feel of the restuarant. The wooden bench seating reminds me of a family bbq event with all sauces set in the middle. My friends and I wanted to order someting small to share to sample the food before booking a proper dinner for a birthday (4pm). We ordered the BBQ platter which came with a half rib, pulled pork, fries closelaw. The seasoning was light, not too salty and in your face with the bbq smoke.... For HKD 150, it can be shared between two people. All I can say is the food is okay.....

Now the bad: If you want to know how it feels to be treated like second class citizen, just go there at the same time as we did, mid afternoon to get the A Staff. The cashier was simply rude. The don't take credit card - make sure you bring cash (because who uses credit cards in places where prices range between 50 to 150hkd, being sarcastic). The cashier didnt let me friend order because I had to run to get cash first, I get it, pay before you order. This is not exactly a fine dining restuarant where we dine and dash on a HKD 150 bill. So when I came back with my cold hard cash in hand, i ordered just the one BBQ Platter, and the cashier said "that's all?" - while giving me a ridiculous look. Not understanding what we did wrong, cashier and cook gave us the most unpleasant feeling in the restaurant - like they didn't want us there (yeah, there were no other customers inside).

Anyhow, as my first post, not a great story to tell, however I am proud to do my part in sharing my experience at this establishment, and will let my network know how we were treated. In short, we will never come back.

I have no complaints about my Big Boi with a nice slab of ribs, a good amount of pulled pork, 2 scoops of coleslaw and some fries. The only thing would be that the bottomw half of the fries were drenched in oil from the meat, and was just a bit too greasy for me to stomach. My husband's sandwich bun was pre-fab processed white bread and soaked in grease from the meat, so much so that the bottom half was falling apart like putty dough when you tried to pick it up. If they could let the grease drain a bit first before serving it, that would have been a great improvement.

Price-wise I'd say it was a tad expensive for the amount and quality, but it's a good start for Hong Kong.
