Read all the amazing reviews, and of course I had to come try this place out for myself.Chef Gavin mixed up traditional Asian flavours with Western influences, and every bite is an explosion in your mouth. The service was also impeccable. 10/10 would visit again. In fact, already planned my next visit to their sister restaurant Pondi.

Thought I was coming here for a casual dinner but boy was I wrong. Every single bite was just a flavour bomb. Explosion in your mouth literally. At first glance, the menu is very different and unassuming with its whole middle eastern, Chinese and European fusion but somehow it....works!!! Get the tasting menu and let Camille pick the wines for you! It’s mad stuff. Such a joy to try and learn new things here. 9.5/10 for flavour and service. Would 100% return

Came to this restaurant on Friday after work - ordered chef tasting menu which was $420 per person consisting of 8 dishes. To be honest I don’t really remember every name of the dishes since they are all fusion done there are many special ingredients in different dishes. Baby green (芥蘭) with kombu jelly was our favorite but I also recommend trying their roasted lamb ribs which were so tender and it’s really good with the youghurt. They serve natural wines - tried SOS (fruity) and COSMO (spicy).

Summary: Simultaneously comfortable and exciting, Brut lives up to its name. Asian fusion that doesn’t skimp on taste or experimentation, with intense and memorable flavours. A shouldn’t-miss SYP gem (if you don’t mind sharing tables!)You would never come across this place if you didn’t live in SYP.  Not that it’s particularly hard to find, but it’s off the main road and I doubt gets a lot of random foot traffic. That’s a shame because it’s one of my favorite new restaurants. One thing to note:

You would never come across this place if you didn’t live in SYP.  Not that it’s particularly hard to find, but it’s off the main road and I doubt gets a lot of random foot traffic. That’s a shame because it’s one of my favorite new restaurants. 

One thing to note: you’ll be sitting at either 1) one long bar table, or 2) the bar counter, so don’t expect much privacy or romance. It does wonders for the energy of the restaurant though, and it certainly works with the vibe they’re going for.

Asian-inspired, it’s varied in its execution, using French/Middle Eastern/Asian techniques. We were there for a Wine pairing dinner with Unico Zelo (super-value Australian wine that’s delicious for casual drinking – get it at Wine and Things in HK), but all the food we had is on Brut’s normal menu anyway. Here’s what we had:

Asparagus with Lemon cream and Salmon Roe

It doesn’t look like much, but they’ve somehow crammed each drop with immense amounts of flavour. The lemon cream is salty, sour and filled with umami from the salmon roe. You’d think it was bland from the picture, but it really packs a punch. That said, asparagus dominates the dish, and no sauce can take away from that.

This was a great dish – believe it was sous vide’d because it’s perfectly cooked, and while it’s much milder than the traditional Chinese flavour, that aroma comes through beautifully in combination with the additional fried ginger and lightly pickled vegetables. This is a standout dish.

Maryland Crab Cakes

Not sure how Maryland these are (I’ve never tried a crabcake in the US with this little flour), but they are packed with crab, and the fried garlic and chili on top gives the dish some real bite. They had paired this with a clean, bright, slightly fruity white wine (Fiano), and I recommend you try that too. Delicious.

Applewood Smoked Onsen Egg topped with Pork Belly and Fried Yuba

This was a special on the chalkboard and is a tiny dish (cost HKD 60), but man, if you have a chance to try this, you should do it. The egg and pork belly are individually smoked and incredibly savory, with depth for miles, but if you combine them? Wow. The yuba is fried in strands and fill the edges of the dish, and apart from bringing some crunchy texture, they have enough of their own tofu character to deepen each bite of the egg and pork. Just a brilliantly conceived and executed dish that’s even better than you’d expect from its (admittedly) already delicious ingredients.

Miso Eggplant with Goat Cheese

The goat cheese gets a bit lost in this dish for me, as the miso sauce is a bit overpowering and generously ladled on. Still delicious, but not a necessity to try.

Broccoli with Black Garlic Coconut Cream sauce

Not sure if I liked this dish – Broccoli was steamed/boiled and some of the florets were a bit overdone. Wonder if grilling this would have worked better for texture? The sauce was also a bit odd – the coconut-cream-and-garlic combo was a bit thick for me, but the black garlic flavour definitely pops.  We still finished the whole thing 😊, but not sure if I’d order it again. 

Crispy Lamb Rib with Blackberry Relish

Bottom line: if you have ever thought lamb tasted too gamey for you, do not order this. If you do however, enjoy the taste of very strong lamb, this dish is awesome. The outside of the lamb rib was massively crunchy, and when you bite in, it’s a perfectly seasoned, intensely rich lamb rib (bone very-much-in). The semi-sweet relish goes well to balance it, but the lamb taste is just so particular, I didn’t want to mask it. Definitely hit or miss, and a bold decision in a city where I feel many people don’t like strong lamb flavours. We loved it though

Char-Siew with Fried Leeks and Green Beans

Basically, the fattiest part of the pork belly in a subtle char siew sauce, which I didn't feel penetrated enough of the pork. Also just too fatty for us, but if you like pork belly, this might work for you. The fried leeks were excellent though, and I really like how they try to provide a mix of textures in each dish.

So unusual you keep taking bites to figure out if you like it, and before you know it, it’s gone. The sourness of the ume is so unusual with the salty dark chocolate mousse that I’m still not sure if it was great or just interesting. Anyway, recommend you try it, because I know for a fact that the cookie/mousse combo is delicious.

Overall, I really liked Brut. It’s not cheap certainly, but every dish was something special, and made me wonder what those flavours were, and more importantly, why I hadn’t tried them before. A la carte, I think you can cobble a meal together for less 400 p.p., and the chefs tasting menu seems a good deal at HKD 380. It’s an exciting addition to the SYP food scene, and as long as you don’t mind communal seating, well worth making a trip over to try.

Husband & I booked last minute into the special Valentines menu and were completely blown away!! The food was impeccable, designed for sharing but we kind of wished we didn’t have to share hah! It was THAT delicious!! We really loved the curated menu and wine list, and tried two different reds which were both fantastic for the price point (approx $500-600 per bottle). We really loved the romantic date night ambience and appreciated the live guitarist too. Service was attentive but not intrusive,

We are definitely booking another date night here to try their regular menu. Only thing to note is that seating is all on high bar stools, so be prepared to practice your posture!

It is run by a French lady with a Chinese chef serving up what the owner described as "French-Chinese Fusion small dishes".  The decoration is cozy and stylish, all glasswares & cutleries are well above your average LKF/Soho restaurants. Please note there are no proper dinning tables, there is a choice of dinning bar (for up to 5 or 6) and 2 tall communual tables with stalls. The maximum patrons is around 20.  First diappointm

Please note there are no proper dinning tables, there is a choice of dinning bar (for up to 5 or 6) and 2 tall communual tables with stalls. The maximum patrons is around 20.  First diappointment is the rather limited wine selection of under 20 in total, which is a bit of a surprise considering its French ownership.  Menu is also limited offering 5 or 6 starters and the same numbers for main course.  The two of us opted for their "tasting menu" at $420 per head, We shared a total of 7 or 8 smallish dishes, most of them looked stylish but unfortunately didn't tasted as good.  If the cooking is improved this would be a nice hidden gem.

Their team (the Caucasian lady boss and the Caucasian waitress) really has the most unprofessional people in F&B industry we have ever encountered in HKG. When we “customer” had questions on the food portion, we asked the waitress politely. (We ordered tasting menu for 3 persons, but a few dishes came with 2 pieces e.g. bond marrow which was really difficult to share). In return, we got replied with big attitude. Paying $2,xxx for 3 persons in a tiny restaurant (we had to put our handbags on our lap during the dinner), we didn’t expect the service was at such low level. Definitely an unpleasant dinning experience you could hardly get in HKG when you are paying this amount of money.

Tastes are superb, a new little gem I highly recommend in Sai Ying Pun!! But make sure to call in and make reservation. The place is packed most of the time, but I will come back again and again for sure!

Everyone should have a neighbourhood restaurant – somewhere they are recognised, accommodated and
tolerated.

Second Street Comfort Food is mine. Despite being a sanctuary for my building’s dishevelled middleclass, middle-aged, middleweight men and their offspring’s terrorizing scooters, it never let’s me down. Or, it hadn’t until recently. 

Lately, our Friday night table has been reserved by offer-chasing skinflints. The majority of diners now arrive via the discount app, Time-Eat. Such apps are a scourge on dining, reducing the selection of a restaurant to an autistic assessment of price. As a result, the joy of food is reduced to a dispassionate ingestion of sustenance and – with a guarantee of patronage – restaurants churn-out high carb, low price patas bravas. Like sweaty Germans annexing sunbeds in a second rate Thai resort, Second Street’s new diners are not concerned that they’re defiling the aesthetics and atmosphere of the place I hold dear.

So, I’m in search of a new haunt and I’m determined not to walk more than twenty yards from my front door.

Brut! by Pata Negra House, the new Second Street tapas restaurant looks perfect. In the short time since it’s opening, Brut! has enjoyed rave reviews from friends and neighbours alike. So, my Second Street drinking posse and I take one of the high tables on Wednesday evening. 

The interior is small, dark and sexy. Though, the atmosphere is anything but. It’s lively, happy and inviting with an air of organised chaos. Fleetwood Mac provides the backdrop around which the wonderful staff perform energetic explanations of the wine and food menus (side note: I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience in a restaurant playing Fleetwood Mac).

A wide selection of cocktails and organic wines are scribbled on the walls. We are happily upsold a very quaffable bottle of red. I couldn’t tell you what it was – the explanation was fired at us like a gatling gun of superlatives – but the bill reminds me it’s the better part of $400. We enjoy a few of them.

Truth be told, having walked past Brut many times since it’s opening, I was expecting the sophisticated, lively atmosphere. However, what I wasn’t expecting was the completely original dishes. The menu has obviously been put together with a great deal of care, built around carefully sourced ingredients and unexpected pairings.

We started off with the Baby Buns of the Day. It would be both accurate but also grossly unfair to call these pulled-beef sliders (anything ‘pulled’ or
described as a ‘slider’ should only ever be delivered by scantily clad girls in orange hot pants). And indeed, watching the owner try to explain our dish
without using the words was the culinary equivalent of the parlour game taboo. A rich dollop of slow cooked beef, roast tomato and pickled gherkin were sandwiched between perfectly toasted brioche buns. Sliders they were, albeit very good sliders.

We needn’t have worried that our opening dish was a little prosaic as the next two were unexpected and delightful.

The first was milky mozzarella with rich, acidic black olive tapenade and piquant deep fried enoki mushrooms.

The second was pureed eggplant and pickled vegetables. The eggplant babganoosh had a morish weapons-grade smokiness. To stand up to eggplant’s robust flavour, the veg needed to deliver a sharp acidic judder, akin to your testicles breaking the surface of a hot bath. Alas, they had a mild, raw flavour which was lost upon any contact with the eggplant.

Our main source of protein was Iberico Secreto, a slightly chewy, beef-like cut of pork neck, served pink. It delivered a rich gamey flavour, lifted beautifully by a sweet roast pepper sauce.

A Roquefort mac and cheese was appetising but unremarkable.

We rounded off our meal with a plate of cheese. Disappointingly, we received three types of Manchego, which were all too similar in taste and texture. 

We all really enjoyed our meal at Brut! But, with a little distance and digestion (metaphorically speaking), the dishes don’t quite hang together and combine to a sum greater than the parts. The heavy mac and cheese for example, felt at odds sat next to a fluffy plate of mozzarella. 

However, Brut! has really admirable convictions and with a little refinement I think the menu will match the exceptional quality of the experience.

One of the prerequisites of a neighbourhood restaurant is the availability of a table. I see this as one of the few barriers to Brut! becoming my new neighbourhood restaurant.

It was an ordinary night hanging out with friends on a relaxing Friday, but it turned out to be an extraordinary food tasting experience.I’m no any expert but only a food lover. The dishes were well displayed, not too fancy. The food was prepared in a perfect fusion of traditional Spanish tapas with touch of the east! I had a chance to talk with the chef and really appreciated his creativity and passion in cuisine. The food portion was also good for sharing. I would definitely recommend to my fr

I’m no any expert but only a food lover. The dishes were well displayed, not too fancy. The food was prepared in a perfect fusion of traditional Spanish tapas with touch of the east! I had a chance to talk with the chef and really appreciated his creativity and passion in cuisine. The food portion was also good for sharing.

I would definitely recommend to my friends and will go back again!!

我明明叫咗矮瓜㗎,究竟去咗邊?大家唔好好似A姐咁失禮,中間嗰碟咪係矮瓜。只係大廚加咗少少薑同乾檸檬絲,再加入矮瓜煙薰,所以變成黑色。大家可以用青瓜條、甘荀條同自家醃製嘅酸菜點矮瓜蓉食,好特別。

另一個頭盤用咗喺香港比較少見嘅白鯷魚,因為佢用鹽醃製過,所以好多人都叫佢做鬼佬鹹魚。白鯷魚肉質飽滿結實,大廚特

This restaurant is a welcomed addition with passion and generosity behind every pour and plate. The prices were very reasonable, but this is not the only reason we look forward to going back. The cheese platter was fantastic, but so too were the 3 other dishes we shared - mixture of meats and veg. We would recommend soliciting advice because the woman really knew her food and wine pairings.
