...the managers here are out to extract as much money out of you as possible. Everything specific about this restaurant you can probably find out from the rest of the reviews. What we got was something I had never thought possible: a horrible experience despite a discounted dinner and adequate service. And all of it I think, can be blamed on the management.
First, they have yet again decided to not serve tap water, instead trotting out some mineral water from central Italy for $48 per litre. Now, I'm a strong advocate of serving tap water as long as it's clean and available. If your margins are so tight as to need to rely on enforced ordering of fancy drinks, questions should be asked about where else you might be cutting corners to make a buck. What's also interesting is that the waitress actually apologised for being able to serve tap water. .. poor thing. Reading past reviews of the Cafe, I find that the rules on serving tap water have been at best inconsistent. If being forced to pay for water is one of your bug-bears, stay away, even if later reviews claim otherwise - who's to say the rules won't change again?
Second and very worrying for a place trying to look French, to the extent of piping in a range of 1930s French songs - we were asked how we wanted our DUCK (with seasonal fruits - $238) done!!!. Now I get that it's Hong Kong and there are shops just down the road in Central which serve really tough duck, but Mr Manager, how about taking the cue from the canned Edith Piaf music wafting around your establishment and understand that in France, no one asks that. My request that the duck be done "so that it's tender inside" wasn't understood, and my "medium" duck came undercooked, so that the inside was closer to raw than cooked and therefore unchewable.(imagine unstriated red meat)
We escaped without bothering with dessert.
I had to take most of the vitriolic comments I had written on this place. All I can say in conclusion is that we've been to three Igor's restaurants. This is the only one that doesn't reliably serve tap water. This is the only one where we were asked a worrying question that reflected a lack of understanding of the cuisine on offer. And this is the only one where the star of the meal - the Steak Frite ($198) - while good, could be gotten as good elsewhere, like Bistecca.Which we would happily go to again, even if there isn't a 2-for-1 deal and even if the waiter there spilled a glass of water on me the last time we went; at least they looked like they knew what customers wanted for their money.
(oh, and apparently the Rose wine the Cafe served the wife tasted watered down, and our order of escargot was repeated back to us as "snails".)
