話説這三個星期前,左手腕舊患復發,痛症一直未減退,所以一朝早便去了正街看完跌打,左手包裹著純白色的"拳套"後,又要為午餐想想法子。原先已決定去一間cafe小店食件蛋糕然後再上班,怎料因小店附近有食水喉維修而導致沒法開店,就注定與它無緣。但好景不常,天氣先生又不喜歡我,頓時不起大雨來,一向不喜歡帶傘的我又要和雨天玩躲避遊戲了。在手束無操的情況之下就巧遇了這間具歐陸式風情的餐廳,店內一個客人也沒有,似是剛剛開店營業不久,所以決定做它是日的第一客人吧!一般的歐陸式餐廳都特意營造一個陰暗浪漫氣氛的情調和環境,但這裡卻背道而馳,樓底很高,天花上吊著數十盞巨型的燈膽,創意度極高;四周牆壁均掛上意大利不同等地的圖畫;酒吧枱寬敞,給予客人一種舒適的視覺享受,令人耳目一新又不失格調。所影到的相片是門外的餐牌,圖文並茅,價錢位於同區內相對比較上也合理,$88的午餐,包括了是日餐湯或沙律,主菜可選擇意粉、薄餅,或以$118選較貴食材的西冷牛扒或三文魚扒,餐飲則可選茶或咖啡或是日甜品!小妹原先是看到門外餐牌上的risotto而衝著來的,但入到去一坐下,就被兩個菲籍的女侍應,指示看了看近酒吧枱黑板上的餐單,才知

一般的歐陸式餐廳都特意營造一個陰暗浪漫氣氛的情調和環境,但這裡卻背道而馳,樓底很高,天花上吊著數十盞巨型的燈膽,創意度極高;四周牆壁均掛上意大利不同等地的圖畫;酒吧枱寬敞,給予客人一種舒適的視覺享受,令人耳目一新又不失格調。

所影到的相片是門外的餐牌,圖文並茅,價錢位於同區內相對比較上也合理,$88的午餐,包括了是日餐湯或沙律,主菜可選擇意粉、薄餅,或以$118選較貴食材的西冷牛扒或三文魚扒,餐飲則可選茶或咖啡或是日甜品
小妹原先是看到門外餐牌上的risotto而衝著來的,但入到去一坐下,就被兩個菲籍的女侍應,指示看了看近酒吧枱黑板上的餐單,才知道門外的餐牌並非每款美食都可選擇,要以店內的為準;雖然店員說他們是有售risotto,但不在是日精選中,要按原價收取$158,更不包括前菜和飲料,聽見要收取近一倍的價錢,心裡頓時沉了一沉,也決定放棄了。

餐湯是蘑菇湯。雖然湯內吃到不少蘑菇微粒,感覺實在,
但蘑菇香味只是輕描淡寫的帶過,要多喝幾口味道才稍為滲出;
質感呈水狀而並非一般黏稠狀液態的蘑菇蓉,口感相對缺乏,有點失色,
一開始就有著不討好的經歷,先入為主的感覺已令接著下來的更失望了!

附上的focaccia帶有很香的麵包粉味,但質感欠彈性和鬆散乾身,溫度連餘溫也不及,水準只屬一般。
但配上了橄欖油和意大利黑醋,質感變得油潤可口,酸酸甜甜的黑醋令人開胃,口感頓時提升了不少。

蜆肉新鮮多汁,但size細小,份量更少,拾到的蜆殼比起食到的多;
不過蜆肉隔沙做得好,入口質感沒有受礙,加入少許胡椒調味,帶點辛辣惹味;
意粉偏硬身,味道亦平淡,只落得太多檻㰖油而忽視了其他調味料,結果弄得整口都是油,沒有口感可言!

反而這碟「肉醬意粉」便可觀得多了!
雖然意粉同樣偏硬身,但配料是用新鮮的蕃茄茸去煮,沒有小妹最怕的青草味,甜酸度剛好,令肉醬吃起來更清甜自然。另外,肉醬用免治牛肉去做,牛肉肉質依然彈牙亦不"鞋"口。
但只因火喉控制不好,意粉未能把蕃茄茸的清甜扣入,兩者未能融合,變得很累贅!

叫了一杯凍咖啡,附上了一小壺的糖水讓客人自由添加。
奈何這杯似是而非的凍咖啡,本有著啡色的色澤,但卻完全沒有咖啡的味道,更說不上會有香醇濃郁的回韻後勁,只是飲著煉奶+糖水味道,叫人大失所望!

全場唯一使人拍案叫絕、連女侍應也不斷推介的ice-cream cake,
面層青翠色的包含著粒粒果仁的開心果雪糕,果仁微細而脆口,咬口非常;
中層則是士多啤梨雪糕,雪糕質感柔滑,咬著一小粒一小粒的士多啤梨果肉,酸酸甜甜,十分醒胃;
而底層則是香濃鬆軟的牛油蛋糕,極富鮮牛油香,配合著香甜的士多啤梨果醬,香、軟、滑集於一身,層次感玩味十足,令人難以忘懷!

This is the second part of my day at Memos on June 8.  Six of us stayed back to have dinner after the anniversary celebration for my friend's company that afternoon. Again, Carlos wowed us with delicious food.  We shared three different appetizers: 1. This is the second part of my day at Memos on June 8.  Six of us stayed back to have dinner after the anniversary celebration for my friend's company that afternoon. 
Again, Carlos wowed us with delicious food.  We shared three different appetizers:

As for the main course, we ordered the fish and steak.  Check out the pictures.  The fish was done perfectly - so juicy.  The steak as well.  We were so stuffed.  But of course, we left room for dessert.  Just look at the pictures and you'll see why.  The pictures paint a thousand words. 

We shared about 3 bottles of wine... one of which is the Sios Rose.  Goes perfect with the food.  And at the end of the meal, Carlos brought out a bottle of limoncello.  He said it's customary in Spain. 

I'm having lunch again at Memos this Saturday.  I just can't wait.

So this time, I was there to celebrate an anniversary of a friend's company. It was on a Saturday afternoon around 4ish. The restaurant was easy to find. I got off on Bonham Road and walked down from the escalators. As soon as I reached High Street, I turned left. You can't miss it.
I love the appetizers at the party. Authentic and flavorful. The owner, Carlos, greeted everyone, which I was very surprised and he introduced all the appetizers as they were served. The Spanish wines we had was really wonderful. I tried the rose, Cava and white wines.
I like the ambience of Memos. I highly recommend for intimate parties and family dinners. And even for dates or for a good meal. Some of us stayed on for dinner. The restaurant quickly filled up with guests. I'll write more about our dinner in a different post.

西環高街有不少西餐廳,其中一間叫做 Memo's,環境不錯,賣的是意大利菜,這一天,我便在這兒吃了一頓部分菜式還好,部分卻不太理想,但整體來說仍算中規中矩的午餐。這兒的午餐價錢合理,$88(未計加一)的午餐,已包括是日餐湯或沙律、從餐牌中任選的意粉或是日主菜或星期薄餅和是日甜品或咖啡或茶,選擇挺多。而即使主菜揀選較貴的西冷牛扒或三文魚扒,也只是 $118(未計加一)而已,仍算合理。兩夫妻各自選來一個餐湯和一份沙律,主菜方面,我選的是 「西冷牛扒」Sirloin Steak ,老婆仔揀的則是 「香蒜蜆肉意粉」Vangole Spaghetti。這天的餐湯是「雜菜湯」Minestrone,味道對辦,是及格的餐湯。是日沙律本來是「煙三文魚沙律」Smoked Salmon Salad的,可是這天我倆來得遲,黑板上原先還寫著的「煙三文魚沙律」已剛被換成 Mixed Green Salad ,實在有點兒令自己覺得這天的運氣不好。幸好這「什菜沙律」賣相和味道尚佳,繽紛亮眼的色彩,開胃的味道仍能為這餐帶來一個好的開始。我的主菜「西冷牛扒」要了 medium 的生熟度,出來效果不錯,邊位帶點兒脂膏的外層

我的主菜「西冷牛扒」要了 medium 的生熟度,出來效果不錯,邊位帶點兒脂膏的外層焦香,內裡嫩紅色的牛扒仍然保留著應有的肉汁,調味上雖然有少許不夠均勻,整體來說仍是一道水準之上的牛扒

老婆仔的主菜「香蒜蜆肉意粉」就不太理想了
。這意粉的蜆肉無疑是多的,意粉口感也可以,但味道平淡,大廚好像忘記了下調味似的,使這意粉的味道顯得頗淡,吃來當然就不夠好吃了。

這兒的午餐既然只可以在飲品和甜品之中揀選其中一樣來吃,那當然是吃較有特色的甜品比喝平日經常來喝的咖啡、奶茶好啦!所以我便在餐牌中揀選了在澳洲、紐西蘭等國家中極有代表性,但在香港又甚少餐廳有得吃的 Pavlova la Ballerina蛋白脆餅」作為餐後甜品
。這款以一代芭蕾舞后 Anna Pavlova為名,在澳洲和紐西蘭極受歡迎的甜品,要是做得好的話,餅身鬆脆中帶點煙韌,是很好吃的。這兒的 Pavlova,雪白的忌廉,豔紅的士多啤梨,紅白相映,色相撩人,吸引極了
。雖然鬆脆度雖然稍有不足,但味道不錯,甜度適中
,都算為這一頓午餐帶來一個甜美的結束。

老婆仔不太愛甜,所以沒吃甜品而只是叫來「凍奶茶」作飲品。這兒的「凍奶茶」以十六安士容量的高身玻璃啤酒杯裝載,份量挺多的,以餐飲來說,都算十分慷慨

雖然這意大利餐廳的午餐水準未算十分出色,但餐廳環境不錯、價錢又不太貴、要是想在這附近找個地方吃東西的話,仍是可以考慮的。

其實而家高街一帶開左好多西餐廳,揀左MEMO'S 決定一試面包夠熱,不是那種又凍又硬Salad叫做咁多食物中最OKAY湯係勁難飲...完全冇落cream魚淡而冇味...PUZZA還可以...可能個人中意食薄PIZZA...直得一提係佢自家home made chili oilcoffee好難飲... 幾大杯都冇用

先來一個沙律, 菜類算幾新鮮,但配沙律來的餐飽看似OK但質地是死實那種,儘管已經輕烤過,但口感還是幾實淨下
, 應該是麵飽供應商的問題吧!

Tapas的蒜茸蝦碌, 這個是跟潮流的作品, 時下流行Spain tapas嘛, 一碟四小隻, 簡簡單單的輕炒蝦碌,效果也不錯呢, 蝦肉尚算爽口
,蒜味有但不致太強烈,

由於見旁邊的枱上了一大碟藍青口, 我們也叫了一客,不過這裡出的是茄汁版本, 茄汁味道真實而帶點辣, 青口這裡大概700gm吧, 這菜也付上麵飽點汁, 今次烤得少少濃, 味道好多了,

由於想再加一點東西吃, 再點了一個巴馬火腿,火箭菜簿餅, 簿餅面鋪滿是巴馬火腿&火箭菜, 簿簿的皮底碰上淡淡咸香的火腿,還有帶微妙苦味的火箭菜, 配合面的芝士就是那樣渾然天成似的
,

甜品叫了兩種, 一個是法式簿餅, 自已平時不會叫這個吃, 因為在家裏自已做起來, 亦是簡單的一道早餐, 看來友人們都喜歡這個甜品,

另一個則是焗蛋白配鮮雜菓, 一向對這個甜品都不會主動叫,因為通常打蛋白的糖分好高, 同時太座唔喜好那黐牙口感, 所以她還是甜甜的配鮮菓已經是最匹配的了,

咖啡則是待應聽錯了”Latte”來了一大杯鮮奶咖啡, 算了吧!雖然她問是否須要換回正確的?

星期六晚上,教會完了,跟人慶祝生日,十多人到了MEMO。因教會在旁邊,每次走過都見MEMO都有格調,也算是高街較早加入的新興高級餐廳。其實十多人都叫了八至九個菜,但我只影了兩幅,因食食下,也覺得不是太深刻。1. Carbonara 碟大大,一人份量十人分,每人一條 (?!)不算特別。2. Risotto碟大大 (x2),吃下真的沒有驚喜。它的咬感不足,飯粒又沒有黏性,一粒粒好分明,不似平常食開、煮開的Risotto。味道:很平淡,有菇但沒有香濃菇味。心目中,要吃Risotto,一定是有濃郁味道才好食。這個,太平凡。$128。真的不值。3. 味道:很平淡,有菇但沒有香濃菇味。
心目中,要吃Risotto,一定是有濃郁味道才好食。
這個,太平凡。
$128。真的不值。

3. Pizza
我們都叫了多款Pizza,
一般都OK,薄批的鬆脆,但批皮略為硬了一點。
料也OK,不過不失。

服務方面,侍應都算是友善,
但斟水卻不佳,
叫了個類似經理的女侍應
兩次都轉頭走了,水都慳返(?!)

以這個份量,(因我們叫得不多)
對男士來說,絕對可以繼續食。
對錢包來說,不如慳返少少,去另一間再食。

如果要食這個價錢,試試其他食店還好。

Clams in garlic and oil: Did you ever have a dish for the first time at some restaurant, and it was magical, but every time you order it again, it never lives up? That's what happened to me with clams/mussels in garlic and oil/butter. First time, magical. Subsequently... never good enough. I ordered it here b/c it was the set menu pasta, and I will say that it was good, and that I ate it all. The clams especially were tasty and juicy. The pasta was al dente, things weren't too oily. I just don't know why it didn't come together. Still, it deserves an A-

They brought out chili oil for me to add to my pasta. While it was mostly oil and not really spicy, I appreciate the added fanciness (it was in one of those wicker-wrapped chianti bottles), and it did improve the dish a little.

I skipped the desert that came with the set lunch just b/c I was full at the time and the desert didn't sound appealing to me anyway (can't even remember what it was).

I liked the place. My server seemed totally nice. My experience has given me faith in the quality of their pasta dishes and I may well return to have more, especially at reasonable set-lunch prices. The vibe is definitely quality, which is a quality so little cultivated at small spots in HK.

一間好像很有"情調"和"品味"的平凡餐廳。服務一般,不算太貼心。剛好遇到餐廳其中一個合夥人,但絕對不會照顧客人的需要,只會照顧熟客和親友,對於其他顧客不理不問。食物味道還可以,但$298的seafood stew 卻有點貴,海鮮也不算新鮮。Sangria 也調的不好喝,味道太濃。總體,已這價錢服務,soho會是一個比較好的選擇。P.S 服務其實真的很一般,我的水杯超過七成時間是空的。可以不去就不要去了。

This restaurant has only been open for about 4 months and sports a very large menu with a mix of both Italian & Mediterranean food. Large menu's always scare me - as any kitchen will struggle to prepare them and I'd much prefer to see a scaled down menu.

The street side restaurant opens it's doors widely to the street and has warm indirect lighting with a warm mustard yellow paint. Nice tables, not too close, tableware and equally nice glass ware. It's a simple place and a classic layout to any restaurant you might in Europe.

We (a party of two) were warmly greeted by what we believed was one of the owners as effectively guests in his home. It's a relaxed atmosphere, no hurry to order or leave and a good date night location.

But I'm here for the food and I need to be impressed if I'm to return again. We gave full power to the staff to recommend whatever they thought would wow us and wow us they did.

Focaccia bread (complimentary)

This classic snack (best with a glass of wine) was served with sides of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, a tapenade spread of mashed olives and a nice hunk of butter as well. But it's the bread that matters and often Focaccia is too soft. NOT HERE. Served warm, the crust was a crispy delight and the inter part was fluffy and ready to be drizzled with more oil. AN EXCELLENT START!

Bruschetta
We didn't realize we were getting the Focaccia to start and ordered this as well (more carbs!). Good Bruschetta should be served on a slightly crispy piece of warm bread, you need to be able to taste the tomatos, get a small hint of garlic with a wave of salt n' pepper. It's another simple dish that I've witnessed numerous restaurants destroy.

Memos did an excellent job hitting virtually every feature point I could desire. It's attractively presented with a colorful plate and small lettuce greens in the middle. This meal was indeed going well.

Boneless chicken breasts
The owner recommended these and we were hesitant. This are all too often tough and without flavor. He assured us he used only the best Australian chicken and it was one of his favorites. It's our new favorite all well.

Pounded, lightly salted n' pepper, a dredge in some flour and sauteed in a lemon butter sauce. The chicken was extremely tender and the taste delicate and near perfection. Accompanying the dish was home made mash potatoes that finally tasted like potatoes! Some green beans were also served, tasty they were mere color for the plate. The portion side was enough for 2 people to share.

Pork Roll
Import pork, pounded flat, pancetta, herbs and spices, rolled and cooked until the outer portion is crisp and then sliced thinly to reveal the inter intricate design. This dish screamed European, it was warm tasty crispy and with such flavor as to bring tears to my eyes. Accompanying this dish I got roasted potatoes, nicely burnt on one side, a hard exterior and toasted mushy potato in the middle with similar green beans.

A modest wine by the glass list with equally modest prices.

Figure $300 to $400 per head for dinner with wine.

One friendly waitress asked if we were students. Apparently they don't do Saturday lunch student specials, but she kindly made an exception for us. So nice. Perhaps it is due to the fact that we all looked like death and she took pity.

The guy in shirt and tie however, wasn't so gracious, and insisted that V's sole with side veggies could not be substituted with pasta. Only when V refused to eat her fish due to its indescribable staleness did he care to ask for V's preference. V opted for carbonara. And no V wasn't charged for the fish.

Practically shoved this down my throat because too hungry after the ordeal. Nom nom pour olive oil splosh a little bit of balsamic on the side, rip one piece off bread, dip and swirl in plate. V interjects: note bread - warm - good. I prefer a herbed focaccia. And focaccia breads are always oily. It was yummy but I prefer my bread doughier and less oily. Olive oil quite fragrant, vinegar not too sharp, but could be richer in terms of flavour and depth.

The standard green salad with a slither of smoked salmon and a tiny drizzle of vinagrette. The greens were a bit wet. Smoked salmon wasn't too bad - I had low expectations.

Grilled oh-so-good chicken
If the-man-who-sold-chicken next door made his chicken like Memo's he would still be in business I believe
Sadly he was daring and too trusting of the HK local's discerning palate. Sadly HK people don't adapt very well and we prefer having chicken with a crisp skin, moist in the middle, tender, drumstick, served with potato mash. Efforts appreciated though.

So. Everything was done right about this dish (except the side veg big sigh). No complaints at all - everything required of a proper grilled chicken was delivered - nice and hot. Juicy tender flesh, crisp skin, no unpleasant frozen chicken stench.
M and F ordered chicken - and we were silly enough to make a lame joke about it. Comic relief after unwarranted stress. We are cool.
I am having this next time.

Memo features a carbonara that the health-conscious population would be grateful for because they didn't go heavy on cream. Of course you would have to compromise the quality and yummy factor. Pasta was slightly overcooked and the essence of the dish - which is in the sauce - failed to hit the spot. Parmesan didn't come through in the sauce. They didn't use pancetta either. But I guess if you are craving for pasta and don't really mind the dish not living up to its name, go ahead. There is nothing inherently wrong with this dish. Seasoning was alright.

I stole a couple spoonfuls from T but heh it wasn't too memorable. However I feel forgiving because it is unrealistic to expect a risotto to be done right at a bistro such as this. At least it didn't taste like moist fried rice and they used something like arborio. And it wasn't mushy.

I ordered this. The toppings were tasty (how could they not be? Plenty of melted mozzy, sweet red onion, courgettes and peppers), but I didn't like the thick crust. The rim was like 2 cm thick, felt like chewing brittle bread sticks
. Empty carbs. The tomato paste lining the bottom of the crust was pretty darn tasty though. Intense tomato. Sadly the thick crust dried up in the middle and it was like biting into a bit of stale bread. The surface of the crust was alright - kept moist by the tomato paste. I wouldn't order this again though because it is too filling. And I feel that the pizza has been localized to suit the local palate....not authentic. OK for sharing.

Not really worth mentioning. It was served very hot (yay) but the crumble wasn't a proper crumble at all more like a stingy sprinkling of blitzed digestives...and the apples were sour. Probably coated in apple sauce too (which I do not like in apple crumble). Topped with cheap vanilla ice cream.

Conclusion:
YES, i will return. Not a bad deal at all for what's on offer - as long as you choose the right main course. And perhaps next time get the drink instead and have dessert elsewhere!
題外話/補充資料: Forgot to mention - the mashed potato that came with the chicken was very good. Touch of garlic and lots of butter - creamy mash mmm. :)

The Food,

First we ordered Salads, The Greens were fresh and crispy and the dressing was a home made Vinaigrette.


Then came the Roast it was Huge, the plate was presented to us then it was taken back to the kitchen to be carved for us,
it soon came out and smelled so good, all of the custoemers were looking at it,

At first taste it was juicy and cooked perfectly, the flavor tasted very authentic and home made.

Over all it was a great experience and will be back there,


it was one of the best meals I have had in Hong kong in a while, the price was right, the quality was amazing, and the service was really friendly and helpful.

Later the chef came out (Memo) and chatted with a few tables including ours and mentioned he was from Croatia and Italy,
and he recommended us a traditional Croatian Dessert that was really great,

題外話/補充資料: The Menu is a bit mixed Italian and southern european, with some spanish on the menu as well, I was told by the owner that the business is made up of three partners from Europe so the black board specials will reflect all All of the different styles of cooking.. As i was sitting there i noticed Pizzas that went past and a grilled seabass that looked amazing, I will definitely be back to try these dishes

先來西班牙凍肉拼盤(兩人用,$148),碟很大但食物不多,感覺頗空洞,擺放方式有改進空間.風乾火腿有三款,有比較著名的Jamon火腿,有大路的salame,亦有比較瘦的部位.中間亦放有醋醃椒和橄欖給客人清新口腔.老實說,以這個價錢有兩人分的火腿,亦不會對之期望太高.

最瘦的質感像入口即溶的糖果片,咸香一般.Salame則如其名,咸中帶些辣的相當惹味,油香比較豐富.Jamon的顏色帶沉,質地亦很軟稔,應該是經冷藏的後果?因為記憶中吃過的新鮮手切Jamon ham並不是如此的.雖然脂肪層看似頗厚,入口卻不覺脂香很豐盛,只覺有朕頗濃的果香和少許油脂香,是最重口味的一款.難怪要橄欖來清清口腔!

緊接着的caprese salade定價與蘇豪餐廳看齊,也是我每到各處都愛點來吃的頭盤。水牛芝士中心是新鮮的濕潤,奶味輕柔清爽,不過只有三片就顯得吝嗇。蕃茄仔已熟透所以甜得很,其他的部份也無太大爆點,正正常常就是了。

兩道頭盤後就是唯一的主菜,從云云意粉類中選擇了疑似店自慢的意大利雲吞,口味是火腿和牛肝菌,醬汁則要了butter and sage。

送來的雲吞以碗狀盛器盛載,其實我覺得這安排不太方便。醬汁比想像中的甜,是因為牛油的關係吧,和doppio zero的Ravoli牛油汁異曲同工;sage 則奇怪地帶老麥的豬柳蛋漢堡的味道,叫人百思不得其解。

雲吞正正方方的,皮薄而面積很大,其實應該再裁剪一下會更小巧利落。饀料雖說有火腿和牛肝菌,但吃下的感覺卻像豬膶(!),質感粉粉的,味道有點酥,是因為火腿切得太細碎並完全溶化了,而牛肝菌又過於猛烈的原故?我向來不吃豬膶.所以覺得味道有點太重,不過幸好醬汁的甜味發揮其平衡作用,加上主菜份量比想像中的少,所以還不至於感覺又膩噁心。

但送來的是一片cut cake狀的焗蛋白而非圓形,外層除了堆得滿滿的水果外就是灰黃色的脆蛋白,光是賣相已叫人百思不得其解。

中芯的蛋白比一般的乾,但外皮有點soggy,切下去的聲音和我的心情一般沉重。味道更是淡淡的,和以往吃過的Pavlova很大出入!水果都只是普通的甜,實在令人失望。也許當初如果點tiramisu,後果不會如此糟糕。

結帳,每人大概三百,以地點和食物來說都很overpriced。雖然和one stop相比,這裏比較正宗,但給人驚喜的地方卻少很多,吃的都是別處也能找到的味道.

如果我是老師,要給這間餐廳的成績表一個評語,我想Mediocre會是最正確-平平淡淡,表現不算很差,但亦不顯眼.

餐廳環境良好,食物新鮮,味道不錯。但是,我點的GRILLED PRAWN一直到我先生吃玩了PIZZA跟Spaghetti ,仍未送來。跟服務生反應了幾次,雖然他們態度不錯,但卻愛莫能助。最後一次,年紀較長的一位服務生跟我說"Im very sorry. I told the kitchen but they just yelled at me". 最後,因為實在太晚了,也等累了,決定買單走人了。雖然說新開的餐廳難免會有這種忙不過來的狀況,但是,先是下錯單(我要A食物,但是卻來B前菜),後又是先生的pasta下錯麵種,接著又是等了近一個半小時,餐廳從客滿到只剩下四桌,我的蝦還是沒有來,真是令人而且令我納悶的是,餐廳的老闆一直在跟他的朋友吃飯聊天,甚至吃完後還特地過來跟我們旁邊桌的客人(聽他們的對話,應該也是相識的)聊天,但是對於新客人的不滿和前場和廚房的混亂卻沒有馬上處理,也是令我很疑惑! ANYWAY,我跟我先生都有吃了一肚子氣的感覺,不會再去了!

Slow Start, Quick Run-in

Renovation of Memo's started a few months back. When everything was finished, the lights were turned on, but it took another couple of weeks before really opening. What an owner who didn't care paying rent without doing business!
Then very quietly, Memo's started her operations. And people seemed to welcome that - in a certain Monday evening, I passed by and see 4 or 5 tables filled up, all of them foreigners.

We came here twice on two consecutive Sundays for lunch. So this review carries a higher cost!


The Good and the Not-so-good

There is only a-la-carte in dinner time, but sets are offered during lunch at $88 plus 10% (except steak which has a $10 additional charge). Basically four main dishes are available, namely meat, fish, pasta and pizza (and a fifth one occasionally). In both trials we ordered a steak and a fish. For starter there is a soup and a salad; we ordered both and shared.

On both days, the soup was Leek and Potato. It was smooth; I couldn't quite taste the "strength" of leek, but I did feel the potato. The bread was OK, but in one occasion it was overheated to become "toast", which was tough and dry.
It wasn't a good idea if you want customers to enjoy it the Italian way (i.e. with Balsamic vinegar and olive oil).
The soup: less memorable

But the Tuna Salad was delighting. The tuna was grilled properly, with moisture well kept, before mixing with vegetables which were very fresh (you know, freshness gives texture). And the Vinaigrette dressing simply enhanced both. I never expected a starter of a $88 set to be that good!
It indeed turned on my stomach and prepared me for the rest of the meal.

On the contrary, the Caesar Salad wasn't as great. The romaine lettuce looked quite yellow (probably the inner part of the plant), was not crispy and had a hint of bitterness. The fried bread was not fresh, which became hard and carried an unpleasant taste of cooking oil (in Chinese, 油「益」味).
There was too little beacon, which could have saved the dish.

Here Came the "Main" Point

In both trials, the fish offered was grilled salmon served with grilled vegetables. The first one came with a lighter sauce which was a good match with the taste of the salmon. It was crisp, though seemingly grilled for a bit too long. The second one was even less enjoyable. It was served with tartar sauce, which I didn't like. I know they often come together, but personally I think tartar is too strong and distracts my tastebuds. The fresh lemon juice, which is supposed to bring out the salmon's fresh taste, doesn't mix with tartar either. Probably this time it was an intended "disguise": she said the fish was not quite fresh.

The steak kind of saved the day. It was veal shank in the first trial. Sliced meat was served here, while Safety Stop was way more generous by serving a larger portion (the whole knuckle with bone) at a slightly higher price. It was tender, but the taste was not as rich as Safety Stop's. The sirloin was better. It was cooked just right, and it was firm yet tender and not so chewy.
I think the best way to taste food is to avoid the dip, and I could enjoy the steak in front of us without the mustard. The thing left over in my mouth after chewing was a problem, though; but there wasn't much.

"YES or NO?"

The dessert was Cream Caramel on both days. It was a bit too sweet, and she didn't like it. The reddish sauce tasted like cough syrup at clinics
, and I preferred not eating with that. Memo's should give it more thought on how to finish the set better with a nicer final dish. We haven't tasted their coffee or tea, as we needed lemon water to freshen up.

After the trials, she said that we might as well not go there again. I agreed. It isn't that Memo's is no good at all; but there are good choices nearby (be it Safety Stop or Czarina). There could be more as new ones keep moving in.
