worst of all, when we got served coffee, we asked for milk and sugar, and the barman for some reason got extremely angry. he shouted at us that the sugar was already in the coffee (why?) and the entire restaurant had no milk.

if im paying 200hkd for a set lunch, i would think its not that unreasonable to ask for milk with coffee. after his super bad attitude, he proceed to throw things and slam things into the sink and glare at us. totally horrible experience.

i would give the food 5/10 and but with the service, i can only say i will never go back and hope my experience can help others.

The restaurant is pretty small. We went midweek and there was one table free the entire time we were there, but you should probably make reservations. There's live music, but it's really adds nothing of value. The playlist was what you'd get if you typed in Eagle-Eye Cherry, "Save Tonight" to Pandora and let 'er roll. Some of the songs are out of the singer's range, and the audio is terrible.

I should also mention that you don't put "po boy" in your restaurant name and then fail to sell po boys. Well, you do if you're this restaurant, I guess.

I arrived before my friends and got a champagne pink lemonade or some such. The cocktail menu lists 12 or so items, but they only "had" 4 of them. I don't know what they were lacking for the others-- the alcohol, the mixers, the garnishes-- or perhaps the bartender only knew how to make 4 cocktails. Really no clue, but it seems odd to be "out of" the majority of your menu items. Good lemonade though.

We got the chicken and the duck fat fries. That's two distinct menu items, so they don't arrive at the table together. The fries came first. Another reviewer complained that they were cold and soggy with no truffle flavor. I had the opposite experience. The fries were warm and crispy enough, and I could definitely taste the truffle. Unfortunately, I don't like truffle on my fries. The fries were fine though, definitely nothing special.

The chicken took forever to arrive. I made it to my second drink before then: I think it was called an Agave Sweet. I ordered it b/c it had jalapeno syrup and cayenne pepper and I like spicy cocktails. This was not noticeably spicy, and was far too sweet for my tastes. At this point, I had had half of the cocktails menu. Usually I'm more blitzed when that happens.

Finally, the chicken arrived. (We got 2 whole chickens for 4 people.) It was a spring chicken, as we could tell from the small amount of meat on the bones, and the reddishness of the meat. (Young chickens have permeable bones which leads to pigment in the marrow dyeing the meat.) The most noticeable feature of the chicken was the enormous amount of breading, that had very little staying power. When you take one bite, all of the breading falls off the entire piece into a giant pile on your plate. Indeed three out of four of us left a giant pile of breading on our plates when we left (one of my friends demolished his, so there you go).

With regard to the chicken meat, meagre though it be, it had a number of virtues. Young chickens are tender, and this chicken was tender, and reasonably juicy as well. I did think, however, that it was overly herb-y. There was a ton of pretty powerful herbs, and unless that's what you're looking for in your fried chicken experience (and I am not), that's not exactly ideal.

One final complaint one of my companions voiced went as follows: The best fried chicken is fried in a way that the skin melts, leaving you with no soggy skin to deal with afterward. Here, that had not happened.

So it was not the best fried chicken. At the end of the meal, we were given a ballot. Apparently Moonshine Etc. is on some competition for best fried chicken with some other places like Lily & Bloom, Boomshack, Okra, and Butcher's Club. (I definitely hope Butcher's Club loses, they don't even make chicken, the lying jerks.) Anyway, here was how I filled it out:

1-10 scale, 10 being the best
Tenderness: 8
Moisture: 8
Crispiness: 7
Flavour: 7
Overall Impression: 6
Total Score: 6

It was tender and juicy, as I've said. I didn't quite know what to put for "crispiness". It had no lack of crisp, but there were yet other problems with the breading. Same with "flavour"-- it had lots of it, but maybe too much. Thus the last two categories show that the initial categories don't quite identify all that makes fried chicken good.

So what's my Overall Impression? It's OK. I'd rather have Roundhouse chicken and Jollibee, in that order. I don't know about the other competitors in the fried chicken contest, I may have to try them in the future. But I won't be having the chicken here again.

Bacon on Maple French Toast with Corn Beef Hash and Egg ($100). Simple yet perfect is what I thought when it was presented to me. The bacon was crispy. It was sandwiched between a fried egg, sunny side up where the yolk was still runny. The toast was thick and sweet with a thin layer of peanut butter between it.  It was sprinkled with powdered sugar and crunchy toasted almonds. Maple syrup was provided and not pancake syrup. There was a tiny bowl of fresh fruit and another bowl of cheesey corn beef hash that was screamed of gluttony. And that is what southern comfort is. Something that will warm you tummy and make your soul feel like it's come home.

Pink Lemonade ($98 unlimited refills). They offer pink lemonade for unlimited refills. Now that I think about it, it cost as much as the meal so pricewise, this was a bit ridiculous. But the lemonade was good. Tart with a hint of bitterness from the grapefruit. And when they say unlimited? It really is. They refill your glass without asking. Once they see your glass is half full, they walk by and fill 'er up! Without asking. I felt like I was back home in North America, where bottomless drinks were always refilled without asking.

I got online to see what goodies we could order beforehand, the menu looked pretty good but I was disappointed po'boy sandwiches were nowhere to be found. Isn't this a restaurant named after it??

I got there around 7:15pm, the place was small and almost empty. I was shown to our table, which was no bigger than your average dining table for 4 at home, with someone (not my friend) already on it. I was reluctant to sit with her, and I asked if there were other tables, I was told it was fully booked and table-sharing was communicated over the phone, I was like oh ok, so I sat with a complete stranger just across the table (imagine tea restaurant at busy hour). At this point I definitely needed a drink so I ordered Blush, a cocktail made of 'Vodka, caramelised apple, fresh strawberry, apple, fresh lemon'. It was fruity and pretty yummy, though I couldn't taste the caramelised apples at all.

We ordered Pernod Clam Party ($120), DIY Blackened Catfish Tacos ($180), Croque Monsieur ($120), Lobster Gumbo Gravy & Mozzarella on French fries ($180). The clams were so-so, they were mixed clams, the large one I had was good, but the rest were overcooked and tasteless. It was almost like they were first boiled and dumped on the hotplate (hence all the clam juice flavour was elsewhere). The baguette that came with it was not good quality either, it was one of those pasty white ones.

The fish tacos came next, sizzling on a hot plate. It was the most anticipated dish and it didn't disappoint. Crispy fried fish, with rice and beans, sauteed veggies, condiments on the side. There's something about assembling things yourself (eg. Peking duck pancakes) that adds to the experience and taste! We loved this.

Croque Monsieur was made with duck confit, black truffle and Gruyere cheese, this was a little underwhelming, as the truffle didn't come through that well, and the bread wasn't as crispy as I'd like. My friend didn't even finish her share.

Lobster Gumbo fries were the most disappointing of all for me. The gumbo on it was really salty, and it became stodgy and unappetising once it was cooled. We barely finished half.

We were told, at some point between the Croque Monsieur and fries, that it was the last order. I was slightly taken aback, thinking all this catching up must have made time flown by. I hadn't looked at the clock so I assumed it was late. My friend ordered another cocktail, we were still chatting, and then the bill was thrown on the table for us. We were a little confused, but paid it anyway.

Then, the waitress came over and said, sorry we need the table now. I looked at my phone and it was only 9pm!! Our dinner bill was over $1200, we were not at a tea restaurant!!! (even though we were sitting like it was) They came and cleared our table, and made sure we felt rushed to get out, when my friend still had her drink full! The already small dining space was crammed with people waiting for their tables, making it even more uncomfortable. The new party of 4 just sat by us, giving us the evils. My friend took her time because it was frankly rude of the restaurant to kick us out like that, but I just wanted to get out.

Yes, I'm aware rent is high in Hong Kong, and yes, if you do table turnarounds you can make more money, which is what a lot of cheap Chinese places do to compensate for the (relatively) cheap food, but this is hardly a no-frills place. Admittedly our food bill was quite cheap because we didn't order the mains. The waitstaff had OK attitude overall but the restaurant practice in place is completely unacceptable.

PS. As I was writing this, I was thinking about the bill amount, because the food prices didn't seem to add up so I double-checked. We ordered 4 Blush ($135) in total, 2 of them I ordered before 7:30pm (Happy Hour end time), one I was having, and I said I will order another one now, but can it be brought later when my friend arrives. Somehow they got confused and only took order for 1. So even though technically I should have 2 drinks at HH rate, I can semi-understand if only 1 was charged at HH price. It turns out they charged all 4 at normal rate! That's so cheeky! 30% off $135 is not a substantial amount extra, but it's the principle. This really just gets worse every time I think about it.
I guess birds of a feather really do flock together, because the 3 girls next to us were really inconsiderate as well. In the already cramped environment we were in, my neighbour, who was pretty much just 5 inches away from me, was laughing hysterically and slapped the table really hard, startling us. OK, I get that it happens when you're catching up with your girlfriends, but she didn't even apologise and carried on business as usual. She was talking so loudly my friend and I could hardly hear ourselves. The worst part was when they decided to take selfies, she shoved her phone right by my face without an apology not once, but twice! Seriously!!! Definitely made the whole ordeal even worse.

In short, everything here looks better than it tastes. The fried chicken was of really average quality while it costs like a 5* hotel. You basically couldn't taste any seasoning other than on the skin.

The ribs were alright but the duck fat fries were pretty disappointing... the truffle could be barely tasted n the fries came in cold and soggy..

overall its a disappointing dining experience

Wan Chai Star + Sun + Moon streets are famous for good bites with amazing vibe, we feel so lucky to have discovered a new place to hang out in this friendly neighborhood area.

In this dynamic area, the restaurant got us attracted with its name, where moonshine as a disguised alcohol name during the alcohol prohibition in the US, and po'boy simply means poor boy has now transformed into a traditional submarine sandwich from Louisiana.

Well, it's because during every Wednesday night, live bands music would be available at the mini stage opposite to the upper floor. Customers should considering choosing the upper deck for better view if they enjoy live music.

Without a doubt, the smokiness was very prominent yet complementing nicely with everything an Old Fashion should have with an addition of bacon flavour for a kick. Based on the skills used and the passion from this drink, it was definitely worth the price!

Peanut Butter and Popcorn Milkshake ($135)

If you know me well, I am a big fan of peanut butter. I would probably eat everything that has the world peanut butter in it. This innovative cocktail was made with Makers Mark, caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, topped with crispy popcorn.

Compared to other peanut butter milkshake I have had in other places, this one was actually milder and lighter in texture, yet the taste was fresh with the nuttiness. Since this is an alcoholic cocktail, we found the sweetness and the bitterness actually balanced out with each other, however, it may not be the best drink to order for those who doesn't have a sweet tooth. Plus, we were quite surprised that some of the popcorn was still crispy after being soaked in the drink.

There were quite a lot of clams in this little bowl of soup, along with some potato chunks that were very soft and almost mashy-like, don't skip out on the garlic bread because it was super crunchy and packed with strong garlic flavour. We found it a perfect match to dip the bread into the soup! Thou, wondering if the price was being a bit aggressive to this portion?

Bayou Bucket

The restaurant takes the name of the dishes seriously to its US root! Bayou Bucket an annual college football game! The seafood bucket contained all in-season picks including king crab legs, tiger prawns, blue crab, clams and mussels with andouille sausage, sweet corn on the cob, and new potatoes

with your choice of sauces between cajun garlic butter, sichuan peppercorn, and pepper lemon and herbs. We have picked sichuan peppercorn sauce and it was mildly spicy which went well with the fresh and light seafood

The ribs were marinated for long hours with signature Jack Daniel and Peach BBQ sauce. We liked that it was not too sweet and too saucy. The ribs they use are generally fattier than other places, therefore, they were all very soft the meat could be torn off easily.

Cajun Fried Half Chicken ($100)

The KFC-like fried chicken was definitely better than KFC. It was in fact not as salty as KFC and the seasoning was comparatively light. The huge chicken thigh was fried with only a thin layer of batter, served with crunchy soleslaw and cranberry apple sauce. If you like strong savory taste, this dish may not be 100% suitable for you, but someone said he loved it so much he could eat that every day, could you?

Although our appetite had reached the sated stage, this jambalaya was something we couldn't resist to have one and other spoonfuls. The very aromatic rice was cooked with secret flavourful minced meat sauce, topped with a few big fresh prawns and paprika powder. The smoky flavour from the paprika gave the dish an attitude, a BBQ-like attitude. We liked the mixed flavour of spicy and savory, truly mouthwatering.

We already got excited before it arrived because it again had peanut butter! OMG! After around 10 - 15 mins wait, the warm lava chocolate brownie was served in front of us. The brown was topped with cherries with bacon bits and peanut butter sauce. We enjoyed how it was still very moist in the centre even after being baked and served in a super hot skillet.

p.s. ice cream may be melted very quickly so do try to finish them asap!

We made a right decision to try the Ebony & Ivory brownie first because this American Crumbles was a bit sweeter. There were lots of raspberry juice oozing out, with the topping granola and salted bourbon caramel making a nice contrast in texture. It was crunchy and cold on top; soft and warm inside.

Both desserts were highly addictive, we liked they were served on a hot skillet to keep the temperature warm during this cold weather. If you do not have a sweet tooth like me, I would suggest to go for Ebony & Ivory

Overall, Moonshine & The Po'Boys is a great hip spot to dine at in the neighborhood. You may enjoy some comforting Southern dishes surrounded by modern chic decor. Do give a couple of their cocktails a try and they will blow your mind. Why not pamper yourself when there are good drinks and food bites waiting for you?

Cajun Fried Chicken (Half) with crunchy coleslaw & cranberry apple sauce $100
Coleslaw
Fried chicken

Iberico Baby Back Ribs with our signature Jack Daniel & Peach BBQ Sauce $250
Jack Daniel

Dirty Rice Jambalaya $68
Dirty rice

Agave Sweet $125
(Tequilla, Apricot Jam, Jalapeno Syrup, Cajun Powder)
Agave Sweet
Cajun powder

Seafood-starter
We've heard of its signature Cajun-spiced seafood boil, the most time-honoured tradition of New Orleans but still, all we tasted were intriguing. This bucket (4-8 servings, priced at $980) teemed with alaskan king crab legs, luscious shells, tiger prawns, king crab legs, mussels, andouille sausage and sweet corn in a moreish lemon cajun butter sauce! Yum! Que approbeche!

Soup

New England Clam Chowder is a surprise, filling the bowl with clams, huge cheer clams, and bite size potato! It reminds me the quality of soup i had at Amigo, one of the best french fine dining restaurant in Hong Kong ( yea you got it?) Garden salad with dressing is another wise option if you are looking for something more refreshing and light to start with.

Mains

Oddly enough, one of the recommended mains was not an usual deep fried- swamp Gator Nugget which tastes and feel like chicken meat with a very subtle yet pleasantly unique flavour of its own. We all favoured the house made sauce to dress up- 1) BBQ sauce, that surprisingly filled with smoked flavour yet you can feel its lightness thanks to the addition of alcohol- bourbon; 2) salsa with sour cream and butter milk, and 3) chilly sauce that won’t get your tongue numbed.

Having been a devour meat lover for years, our table has opted for Iberia Pork ribs with homemade BBQ sauce and Galician 21 days aged strip loin. Spanish Iberica pork ribs are so meaty, unlike the usual one we have, that simply fits in its name Poor boys , which the original idea is to serve BIG!

Galician strip loin was a memorable selection for meat lovers/ carnivore in Hong Kong as it has a different texture and flavour, compared to the buttery angus beef. It’s leaner, but stronger flavour, and a reddish meat which simply lift up the standard for any steak house in Hong Kong.

All the garnish and grilled veggies aside are a welcome sight, as was the evil truffle duck fat fries which which was an ideal accompaniment to the flavour of the meat. So far it’s one of the restaurants that you can come in mind to when you think of a triathlons of ribs, steak and seafood!

Dessert
We are reluctant to leave when we catch sight of the Apple Crumble on the menu. Ice-cream was served on a piping hot pan with the sizzling apply crumbles and able syrups which leaves you both satisfied textures and excitement to your tastebuds, which is how yo’d hope to end the meal.

Come get your Southern grub on in HK at Moonshine & The Po'Boys! Think whisky and bourbon cocktails with alligator nuggets, fried chicken and pork ribs in a casual and rustic setting that will transport you to the South complete with live jazz music on Wednesdays! The owners apparently flew to New Orleans to pick up authentic props like alligator heads and voodoo dolls so take a look around when you do pay a visit. The owners apparently flew to New Orleans to pick up authentic props like alligator heads and voodoo dolls so take a look around when you do pay a visit. The restaurant has 2 floors with the ground floor being the casual dining and bar area while the upstairs is more of an intimate dining space with smaller tables. Only the downstairs is open at the moment as they are still in soft opening mode but I liked the casual vibe on the ground floor anyways which is great for a night out with friends!

The cocktails here are designed by renowned mixologist Antonio Lai from Quinary so you may find similar look and feel in the drinks here. Since the restaurant focuses on whisky and bourbon, most of the cocktails contain elements of that as well and I found the cocktails to be quite strong here as I did with the drinks at Quinary. I tried a few drinks here like the Watermelon Smash and Blush which I recommend because it was pretty sweet and easy to drink.

I have to admit that I've never eaten alligator meat before so I was intrigued to say the least to try the Swamp Gator Nuggets ($90) with ranch, BBQ and peach chili puree sauce! It actually just tasted like chicken (everything does!) and I enjoyed munching on these crunchy nuggets with the sweet BBQ sauce the most.

I totally miss crab pot in the states where you can eat a bucket of seafood on the table so I was ecstatic to dive into this Bayou Bucket with clams, mussels, Tiger prawns and Alaskan king crab legs which was messy to eat but totally freaking awesome! The seafood was so full of flavor from being cooked in beer and a secret homemade Cajun spice blend, it had a great balance in spiciness and I especially loved dipping the meaty king crab legs in the Cajun garlic butter sauce! It comes in 2 sizes which costs $600 / $1200 and serves 4 to 6 people.

The Dirty Rice Jambalaya ($50) with BBQ prawn gumbo was also delicious as it had a deliciously spicy kick to it.

Hands off my ribs! These Iberico Pork Ribs with homemade BBQ sauce were finger-licking delicious as the tender meat peeled off the bone easily but even better were the Truffle Duck Fat Fries with Parmesan cheese which smelled amazingly appetizing and so addictive to eat!

The Cajun Fried Spring Chicken (half $100/ whole $180) was fried in its entirety to lock in the meat juices but while the meat was succulent, I found the crispy batter to be too hard for my taste. It could have used more seasoning as well but it did come with a cranberry apple sauce on the side which was quite tasty actually.

The Galician 21 Days Aged Tomahawk ($550) was an impressive-looking beast but I found it a bit lean and overcooked. I loved the fluffy mashed potatoes though with melted cheese and gravy on top.

This next cocktail was perfect as we moved on to desserts! The Peanut Butter & Popcorn Milkshake with Makers Mark, caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream and popcorn looked like a sweet tooth's dream come true but again the cocktail tasted quite strong in bourbon and I wonder if I can ask for a virgin version of it...

Lastly, desserts to round up our meal with the classic American Crumble ($80) with raspberry, granola and salted bourbon caramel and Ebony & Ivory ($80) with chocolate brownie, cherries, bacon bits and peanut butter sauce! Both were equally good but if I really had to choose, I'd go for the chocolate brownie.
