the uni tofu is as good as ppl have said with a layer of tofu, jelly and uni.  Great mix of flavors and it tasts really fresh.  Then the ox tongue is not like other restaurants, thick, juicy, well grilled and melts in your mouth.  Lastly, their dessert is worth a try.  The crepe cake was not too sweet and can still feel the layers of crepe.

The first time I walked by this place, it was with boyfriend during our art gallery walks. They were still painting away and I was curious. I made a note to return. Later I read several reviews and I knew I had to return. So, on this bright and sunny Sunday, I purposely came all the way to Sheung Wan, trekked up the gazillion flights of stairs to arrive here for their brunch menu that is only served on weekends. Why did I return for their brunch menu?

Because I love mentaiko. I love pasta. I love mentaiko pasta. And from the many photos I saw, I had to have this mentaiko pasta.

The restaurant is small. And I mean SMALL. I think there were probably a total of 5 to 6 tables. The place is sweet and charming. It has light wooden chairs and tables. It reminded me of those sweet little cafes I find in Japan in those small little side streets that are away from all the tourist action.

Service was amazing. I arrived and there was no room. The waiter gave me a small stool to sit and wait while a couple were just leaving. I was given a menu, but I already knew what I wanted.

Mentaiko pasta. ($78)

And that's what I ordered along with an ice tea ($35).

Isn't this glorious? It was. The pasta was al dente. The sauce was creamy with a kick of spice. Mentaiko was plenty. They even placed a scoop of mentaiko on a shisho leaf. It was beautiful to look at and lip smackingly delicious in my mouth. It was like I was taken back to those little cafes in Japan.

I saw they had other items on their weekend brunch menu. Things like a Japanese breakfast, banana pancake and ox tongue sandwich. I saw others eating that and it looked fantstic. I will be back!

Tabibito is located at the end of Po Hing Fong in Sheung Wan and can be a bit of a walk if you are taking public transportation. However, it's worth it. We went around noon on a Saturday and it was empty, so come early if you want to beat the brunch rush hour. Tabibito serves traditional brunch items like sausage and eggs, and non-traditional items like kimchi fried rice (getting that next time!) and ox tongue sandwiches. They also have daily specials, like sliders and mac n' cheese when I went.

Ox Tongue Sandwich ($78): Tender pieces of grilled ox tongue with mustard, mayo, chopped boiled egg and pickles sandwiched between toasted bread. It might sound like a strange combo (to me at least), but it worked. It tasted like a classic egg salad sandwich but with ox tongue, yet the ox tongue wasn’t overpowered by the creamy and tangy egg mixture.

Super Banana Pancake ($78): This reminded me of Tokyo Banana, a banana custard treat from Japan. If you’re a fan, you will love this pancake. Tabibito’s version puts a healthy portion of delicious silky banana custard inside a banana pancake. I could eat the custard all day long! The pancake had a nice crust while remaining fluffy on the inside. It was served with a side of maple syrup and half a caramelized banana.

Mentaiko Pasta ($78): One of the best mentaiko pastas I’ve had in Hong Kong. The sauce was rich and creamy, full of umami and slighty spicy. The portion of pasta was generous and they didn’t skimp on the mentaiko. Each pasta strand was slathered with it. I also loved the shisho leaf, which cut through the richness of the dish.

Verdict: Delicious comfort food from around the world with a Japanese flair. I’ll be going back to try their "normal" brunch food and of course, to get my mentaiko fix. My only complaint is that their tables are quite small so you may have to play tetris to fit all your dishes on there. Keep in mind they only serve their brunch menu on weekends. They also do not take reservations for brunch.

As at the day of our visit, there was no alcohol served and the customers could all bring their own wine with no corkage. While this was good news for the wallet then, now it is even more exciting that it has brought in the entire line of Hitachino Nest beers and draft on the tap.

The menu was divided into 4 categories: sea, raw, land, soil which was self-explanatory in nature. It sort of gave me a transcendent feeling of "Zen" (don't ask me why). It was interesting and "calming" to just glance through the menu with creative surprises kept popping up.

Twice-cooked ox-tongue - I am a huge fan of ox-tongue and I won't miss it for the world if they appear in the menu. The ox-tongue was stewed and then grilled for extra flavour. The tongue was thick and was cooked to just the perfect texture, though it was not my ideal way of enjoying ox-tongue.

Spicy waygu tartar - Another thing I won't miss was raw meat. This dish is the most reminiscent of french cuisine with a hint of Korean touch - chopped tenderloin mixed with a range of condiments including pickled onions, capers, chives, sesame, raw egg yolk, spicy miso sauce etc., I was hesitant to mix in all the side bits lest the natural meat flavour would be over-shadowed. This dish just couldn't go wrong if the meat was fresh and sweet. The meat was beautiful with just the egg yolk and the spicy miso.

Then came my favourite dish of the night - baked scallops with foie gras, button mushrooms, lomo and parsley. At first glance the dish might look clumsy and taste confusing, yet the taste of different ingredients melted harmoniously in the mouth, not to mention the scallops were cooked perfectly. We especially enjoyed the mushroom-garlic mixture. We happily coupled it with the crunchy rice cakes which were served with the waygu tartar.

We had a second order of scallops and asked for more rice cakes, and they were served eagerly and happily by the friendly staff.

Sweet corn tempura - I am not a veggie person but was tempted by the positive comments of this dish here so we decided to give it a try. The dish was tasty but not impressive to me. I found it better for the dish to do without mozzarella (which was sandwiched between 2 layers of cut corn and sprinkled with green tea sea salt) as the melted cheese had nothing to "absorb" into, it just felt runny on the corn. Thus the final result tasted kind of awkward and the two ingredients just felt odd together.

After dishes of protein the carbohydrates was calling us. There were not many choices and we ordered all the carb dish avaliable. (except for the bowls of plain rice which I saw some gentlemen having with the 24-hour rib Nikomi.)

Sloppy Joe - The buns with roast pork leg, BBQ sauce, cabbage slaw was "safely" and decently made - the bread soft (perhaps a bit too soft to my liking) and baked hot (but a bit moist on the top), the meat plentiful (but not flavoursome enough) - you had certain expectations for the dish and the dish just delivered the expectations, no more and no less. It was quite tasty but not stunning. I felt the price tag a bit high for this reason.

Mud crab okonomiyaki - It may look the Japanese way, but one bite into the savoury pancake of crab meat, cabbage and yam flour defied the pre-conception. The taste of crab meat was subtle and thorough though the texture was a bit too hard and mushy. Still it was quite an amusing and memorable dish.

I appreciate the place for showing great respect for the food and ingredients. The food was not mind-blowing but still it was a fascinating experience to dine there. As the name of the place suggests, it is like taking a trip to new places where new ideas and surprises are in-store for travellers to explore. I also applaud them for offering unpretentious fusion which is not confusion.

It is a pity though that the place offers two seatings: 6pm and 8:30pm. It would have been a great hideaway place to unwind without the time limit.

Some day I will sure go back for the range of Hitachino Nest beers, and I hold a humble hope that 2-seatings issue will be resolved.

The restaurant itself is quite compact, with simple wooden decor and lots of natural lighting. As you can see from the images, the exterior sliding doors were left wide open, which made it a little bit hot from time to time even though there was air conditioning. My advice would be to avoid anything long-sleeved- at least until the summer months are over.
Brunch is only served during weekends, and there is a plentiful selection to choose from. I know that most food bloggers usually try to order different things from the menu…but for some reason, all three of us wanted the mentaiko pasta. Maybe it’s because the pasta has been highly recommended all over social media or because we just really needed something more substantial after walking around in the heat, but I definitely don’t regret our decision!

Our pastas took around 20 minutes to cook, which we didn’t mind because after all, brunch is meant to be a relaxing affair, and it meant that the food was made to order. The pasta itself is, in my opinion, a good size for the price that you pay- though people with really voracious appetites might consider ordering a couple of sides to go alongside it. I absolutely loved the creamy, spicy, umami-richness of this pasta, which also had a lovely al-dente texture. Although the pasta was filling, it wasn’t overly decadent. The mentaiko was plentiful and evenly incorporated into the sauce, and I loved how there was a small serving of uncooked mentaiko at the top which you could mix into the pasta for an elevated flavour and texture. Needless to say, I pretty much had to restrain myself from licking my plate clean!
I’ll definitely be coming back to Tabibito to try more of their brunch options and hopefully even dinner sometime!

All the dishes we ordered we  perfect. And its similar to tapas because of the dish size, which means you can taste a bunch of different varieties in one sitting!

Other than the fact that the location is hard to get to, everything was perfect. Highly recommend!

We started off with some mocktails since they don't have alcohol in the restaurant. You can bring your own alcohol without chargering. Isn't it even better? (Usually dinner at other restauants, alcohol is one reason that makes the dinner more pricy!

I was chatting with a fellow foodie friend and it turned out that we both wanted to try Tabibito, a new Japanese tapas restaurant in Sheung Wan. Tabibito stands for traveler in Japanese which alludes to their mission - to creatively combine Japanese dishes with other culinary methods around the world. We managed to make a reservation the day before for dinner and arrived to discover a chic and modern restaurant located in the equally hip neighborhood of Po Hing Fong. The menu consisted of a variety of Japanese tapas dishes categorized by Raw, Sea (seafood), Land (meat), and Soil (veggies). Our party of 5 ordered a bit of everything to try and after we ordered, we were given free sake by the owner! What a great way to start our meal!

Spicy Wagyu Tartar (5/5) - the presentation was quite beautiful with the bright colors of the garnishes on the side of the beef topped with a gorgeous egg yolk. After it was presented to us, our waiter helped us mixed everything up. The beef was very fresh and flavorful while the spicy miso was mild and gentle so it didn't overwhelm the delicate flavors of the raw beef. The side of rice crackers that came with the dish was nice and crunchy, which complimented the soft textures of the beef.

Sweet Corn Tempura (3.5/5) - the sweet corn tempura was deep-fried with layers of mozzarella cheese and corn with a topping of green tea sea salt. After having some really good corn tempura at Yardbird, it was a bit disappointing to eat the ones here because it was simply too cheesy which overwhelmed the sweetness of the corn.

Baked Scallops (4/5) - the baked scallops came packed with goodies like foie gras, cured meat, and button mushrooms which made the flavors a bit more complexed than it needed to be. While all of the ingredients tasted delicious on its own, the flavor of the scallop had been submerged by the richer flavors from the other ingredients. Sometimes, it's better to just keep it simple.

Chicken Karaage (4/5) - the chicken karaage was above average with its crunchy coat of batter on the outside and moist meat on the inside.

Uni Mac and Cheese (3/5) - this dish sounded appealing on paper but failed on execution. Infused with truffle, the uni mac and cheese was baked with Gruyere and parmesan cheese. The strong flavor of the Gruyere cheese completely covered the delicate flavors of uni. We couldn't taste the uni at all so we felt like we were just eating regular mac and cheese.

Sloppy Joe (5/5) - nothing sloppy about this! Made with roast pork leg, BBQ sauce, cabbage slaw, and pickled onions, the dainty sandwiches were a delight to eat as the flavors of all of the ingredients came together very well.

Steamed Razor Clams (3.5/5) - another dish where the complexity didn't work in its favor. The razor clams were steamed with eringi mushrooms and Hitachino White Ale beer which sounded very creative on the menu. Unfortunately the razor clams were overcooked so they were a bit tough to eat and they tasted like mushrooms for some reason.

24 Hour Rib Nikomi (4/5) - the beef short rib was braised for 24 hours with red wine demi-glace and kimchi on the side. The flavors of the beef was pretty delicious but I found the beef to be a bit tough and not tender enough. Perhaps another 24 hours should do it? Hehe. I do love the spicy kimichi on the side though.

Beef Tataki Donburi (5/5) - this dish was scrumptious! Topped with a quail egg yolk, the rice was flavorful from the yakiniku sauce mixed into it. The slices of beef flank were cooked to perfection at medium-rare which were so soft and tender to eat. This was my favorite dish of the night!

Jidori and Kurobuta Meatballs (3/5) - this was basically chicken and pork meatballs cooked with caramelized onions and cheddar as sauce. The meatballs were alright to eat, but I didn't find the flavors of this dish particularly appealing.

Pork Katsu Skewers (5/5) - the pork katsu was delicious with its succulent pork belly and crispy outershell. The fried batter didn't separate from the meat easily while the sweet onions sandwiched between the meat was a nice touch. My favorite part was the sauce, which was a blend of tonkatsu sauce and dijon mustard. Sweet and spicy at the same time, it enhanced the flavors of the pork katsu tremendously!

Serradura (4/5) - the only dessert they had was a serradura dessert made with miso and it was yummy! The texture was creamy and light while it was mildly sweet with a hint of miso flavor. A great dessert to round off our evening!

Conclusion - I thought the menu was pretty creative and interesting on the whole while there were still some fine-tuning to do with some of the dishes. Some of them were thoroughly impressive while others were a bit mixed - especially the seafood dishes since the flavors of the ingredients can be so delicate and fine. The service was really good and honest though. Initially we wanted to order the stuffed baby squid but our friend visiting from Japan told us that it was not in season yet. Nonetheless, we went ahead with the order and our waiter proceeded to tell us that they only had the larger squid and asked if we were okay with it. We ended up not ordering it, but appreciated his honesty! The ambiance was fantastic as well since it was casual and hip, which was perfect for friend's gathering. Overall, I would say that Tabibito is worth a visit.

Tabibito situates right in the end of Po Hing Fong (next to Blake Garden). The corner space in a dead end does give a cozy and private feeling. The modern design decor sticks out in the neighborhood. The Japanese word "Tabibito" means "traveler" thus in the menu we saw food as well as cooking style from the world's different cuisines; American, British, Chinese, Japanese, Mediterranean, Spanish, etc. Having said that, each dish does present some Japanese influence, perhaps conceptualized by theJapanese chef!

The food comes in 2-persons sharing size (not too big) which allowed us to try out more dishes. My wife and I shared a total 6 dishes plus 2 drinks over 2.5 hours. We truly enjoyed our time as the staffs were friendly and patient in introducing menu to us. Other Diners also seemed to be having a great time and since we sat closely together, we managed to make a few friends!
Pricing of Tabibito is leaning towards higher end; however it provides food quality like any good private kitchen but also, together with a very warm, welcoming environment where you can hang out with close friends and family. I strongly recommend it to everyone who wants to experience something new and somewhat very different from other restaurants in this part of the town.
