Walked around Shek Mun to find lunch today, was going to get 上車車仔麵 but the line was too long and restaurant very chaotic. Settled for this Asian restaurant centered around Taiwan and Thailand food. First off, the service is horrible, the waitress who served me was very rude and when I asked about the availability of drink for my lunch set (because cold drinks need to +$3 😬). Her attitude was so impatient and said she’ll come back after I made up my mind but she never came back… at the end I didn’t even order a drink 😢. Good thing no service charge.
Boneless Hainanese Chicken Rice 招牌去骨海南雞飯 $62 (Lunch price)
Some pieces of the chicken was mushy and badly handled, whilst others were tender. The firmest meat of the chicken has zero flavor and a bit dry too. The skin came off the chicken very easily which could mean it was badly handled. The chicken was served with a piece of cucumber that is thin and hot, and a slice of tomato that had to seed and is from the top with the stem intact. The chicken overall definitely needs more work on seasoning and butchering, but the quantity is acceptable and not too little. The ‘boneless’ is also not true as there was 2 pieces of bone on 2 of my chicken 😂🙂.
The sauces that came was a ginger and scallion oil, Hainanese soy sauce and a chilli sauce. The ginger oil is very faint on ginger flavor and heavy on scallion taste, good with chicken but could use more ginger. The soy sauce is a must for any Hainanese chicken but this one is a tad bit too sweet and salty at the same time, also not enough for all the chicken. The chilli sauce is not spicy at all and very salty.
The oil rice is good. Not too strong chicken flavor but very intense yellow colour, so obviously it has been colored. The crispy garlic as garnish on top is absolutely unnecessary as it contributes nothing except sogginess. The rice also got hard very fast (6-7 minutes into eating) and I had to use chopsticks to fluff it up again. Also… midway through eating rice, I found a shard of lemongrass hidden. This is very dangerous as it was very sharp and I did not mention to staff to avoid a ruckus. Good thing it was lemongrass and not plastic or glass.
The pickled vegetables as an appetizer was disappointing. There was still a lot of excess vinegar in the bowl and the knife work on all of them is terrible and sloppy, some was as thin as paper whilst another was thick with a triangular shape.
The chicken soup is definitely the best thing this set offered if I had to choose, even though it was not perfect. It was very rich and flavorful with a piece of chicken skin in mine as well that was great with the rice 🤪. However, a flaw is that there is a lot of oil floating on the top of the soup and the rich chicken flavor could have been chicken powder or bouillon because it also made me quite thirsty.
The whole dish itself definitely waited on the counter for too long as it was stale and badly presented too with the pickled vegetables and sloppy butchered chicken.
There was also 2 flies that kept bothering my table and I was sitting at the far corner away from the door 😓. I do not recommend this restaurant.
