Came here for the 2nd time with a bunch of friend, the first time was around 4-5 years ago. To be honest, I didn't even remember the shop name, just the fresh seafoods swimming at the front of the restaurant! . In fact, I have never even checked the Openrice reviews before coming, :星班三食-1) One is the wok stir-fried of the fresh fish's fillet. 星班三食-
1) One is the wok stir-fried of the fresh fish's fillet. This had a gingery outer coating with the uniquitous julienned scallions, served slightly wetter than expected. It did not have a lot of 鑊氣 nor did it have a sophistication like those served in high end Chinese hotel restaurants. It was somewhere inbetween, and unsurprisingly, CAME WITH LOTS OF MSG. I would rate it around average but the MSG killed any fish flavours.
2nd Course was the Steamed part of the fish bones and fins, with fried garlic, 陳皮, and lots of oil. This also had MSG. In fact, this dish had a lot of potential in its simple yet tasteful 'recipe'. The main problem was with the MSG and the oil amount, which once again overwhelmed the taste of the fresh garoupa fish.
3rd Course was a Fish Broth - this came with 芥菜, Firm Tofu and Fish Tails and some fish meat, I can't recall if there was any fish head as this was served and distributed by the water. This had very little fish taste to be appreciated, but the soup was white and it probably had more 芥菜 taste despite that being a bit out of the season.
2) Steamed Chicken -
This came with both a Spring Onion sauce and a 沙姜 sauce. This was very huge, but missing any real Chicken taste, whether it be the skin or the white meat. Although I'm not convinced that the lack of Chicken flavour lies strictly with its 冰鮮 status, since I've had fresh chickens before that also lacked chicken taste, nevertheless this was just a bit tough and dry to be served to customers.
3) Fried Pig Intestines (炸大腸) -
I don't normally eat Pig 大腸 that much compared to Cow's, because the pigs don't eat clean vegetarian food like grains or grass like Cows do and therefore Pig intestines are a bit more unclean and often carries a very 'ARD' flavour.... Perhaps I ate too much of this when young in Malaysia, so it gets me a bit worried
Fortunately this was washed and treated well, it was acceptable in hygiene at least. The skin outside was Crispy, with a fair bit of fat remaing inside. This comes with a sweet and sour sauce dipping, which is perhaps a bit boring as this is the same sauce used for many things, such as fried wontons or other fried items.
4) Rice -
This was a really badly cooked and washed rice. It still had too much of the distracting grainy flavour from the skin intact as it wasn't washed well, and the rice was actually sticking together despite being a long grain. Unfortunately, I 'value' rice quality a lot and this didn't past the test.
In hingsight and looking at the Openrice reviews for the 1st time, perhaps we should have ordered the Sticky Rice version instead.
******************
We might have had some more dishes but I can't remember much as this meal was a bit ordinary in every sense.
Its strange that this got so much Rave reviews though, even though I never knew about it beforehand. There are lots of Chinese restaurants in Australia which serves much better food, in fact, I would say that nearly every single Cantonese restaurant I have patroned in Australia would beat here hands down, even including the dodgy ones aimed at the overseas students market in China town which I can name 'dozens'. A bit disappointed really.
A Very Low '3' or High '2'
