Root Vegan was a place I discovered from the listing of new vegetarian restaurants in OpenRice. Curious I wanted to give it a try. Dragging boyfriend with me, we found out it was located in a building that seemed to be mostly residents and a few hidden shops. As it was an older building, the space was huge with lots of windows for natural light to flow in.They had a corner that sold vegan products from local businesses. They also sold bagels and sourdough bread from Little Things, a local online v
As it was an older building, the space was huge with lots of windows for natural light to flow in.
They had a corner that sold vegan products from local businesses.
They also sold bagels and sourdough bread from Little Things, a local online vegan bakery.
Menu is in English and Chinese. The menu is concise and it listed what was given clearly.
They also had various drinks.
During afternoon tea time, they have a bagel or sourdough bread set that comes with a coffee.
I ordered a latte with the bagel and coffee set ($56). I chose an oat milk with my coffee as I really do think oat milk goes well with coffee. It was good with an extra bit of nutty flavor.
Boyfriend had the Iced Chrysanthemum Longan Goji Tea ($28). Lightly sweet and refreshing.
We shared the Red Curry Tempeh with Jelly Noodles ($138). It was so colorful with the huge amount of vegetables. There was tempeh, broccoli, baby corn, brussel sprouts, lentils, cherry tomatoes, Thai eggplant all with konjac noodles. The curry was rich with layers of spice with an undertone of coconut milk. This was so spicy and packe with flavor.
We also had a Sourdough Pizza ($128). The crust was wonderful. A wonderfully tearablel crust that was both crispy yet chewy. It was topped with tomato pumpkin sauce, corn, kidney beans, lentils, cherry tomatoes, pickles, tofu, rocket lettuce and vegan cheese that was well melted so it was gooey and stretchy. The vegan cheese was one of the better ones I've tried as there was a slight salty taste.
As my coffee came as part of the bagel set, I decided on a chocolate bagel. This was one of the best bagels I've had in Hong Kong. A Taiwanese style bagel. It was wonderfully tearable.
It was also stuffed with chocolate.
I've tried a lot of vegetarian/vegan restaurants and this has become my favorite. The food was delicious and full of flavor. I appreciated that most of their menu didn't rely on using pseudo meat but focusing on vegetables. They also sourced local vegan products which I think is wonderful as not many know about these small businesses. Will definitely be back.
