My wife and I finally braved a date night and decided to try Katsumoto the new restaurant that has recently appeared on our doorstep; and we were not disappointed. The restaurant itself is quite small and does not take reservations (much the same as many the Yakatori restaurants in Tokyo) but has some incredible artwork around the walls and umbrellas decorating the ceiling and is quite stunning to sit amongst. The restaurant itself is quite small and does not take reservations (much the same as many the Yakatori restaurants in Tokyo) but has some incredible artwork around the walls and umbrellas decorating the ceiling and is quite stunning to sit amongst. We were shown to a seat pretty promptly and got to sit at the kitchen viewing window which was a great experience.
We ordered an array of Yakatori skewers; We tried the scallops, the Wagyu beef, the smoked duck, the shiitake mushrooms and the Mochi with bacon; each were packed with taste and beautifully presented.
On recommendation we also tried the Chicken Karrage and it was simply delicious; my favourite was the accompanying sauce.
We also tried the edamame and the Shojin tempura selection. Not many times have I had tempura this good. The batter was light, crisp and the vegetables inside were full of life still (meaning not over cooked) and the plate that it was served on, had literally no oil left on it. Simply delicious.
To accompany our magnificent dinner we paired it with a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which was perfect.
Although a bit full, we decided to try the prawn tempura to finish as we were really impressed with the vegetables and they definitely didn’t disappoint. The ponzu sauce was spicy and decadent and the prawns were plump and fresh.
Over all we were both blown away with our first Katsumoto experience. The food, the atmosphere, the service and the opportunity to watch a great chef at work was fantastic
There were so many great options on the menu that we will definitely be going back; we watched around 50 of the Wagyu Sando’s been made and it looked divine! Can’t wait to go back and try one; highly recommended.
