It was a rainy night in Tsim Sha Tsui. While the skycrappers and undergrounds are filled up by shopping malls and railway lines, we just sat in Ootoya in Imperial Hotel, looking out, to see the bustles and hustles on the street. We arrived with two wet umbrellas, the waitress was kind enough to wrap them up for us in plastic bags and sent them to our tables. I have been to the Ootoya in Causewaybay, which is very popular and excellent location right opposite to Times Square. This is my first visit to the Tsim Sha Tsui shop. To my surprise, the tables are sparsely set, unlike that in Causewaybay, there is adequate space between tables, which is ideal for quiet discussions and catch-ups!
We feel like going to Japan, when the set meals arrive, and the whole atmosphere in the restaurant! 特選大戶屋招牌定食 (Special Ottoya Lunch Set)- we saw this on the menu, as "lunch set", so we were a bit embarrassed to ask if it is available for us at dinner time! It contains 5 pieces of fried chicken, and a big piece of fried potato with black pepper inside, every set meal goes with some side dishes like Miso Soup, veggie and white rice. You can ask for refill if you want more veggie and rice. This "lunch set" was just so-so. The fried chicken pieces were a bit dry, and only fair taste for the chicken. Though it looks good with the semi-cooked chicken on top of it.
We were a bit surprised when 炸雞排飯蕎麥麵定食(Fried Chicken Rice with Ramen Set) was served, and worried how can we finish eating the whole set! The Ramen sauce was covered by a cold cup (see the picture), to keep the sauce fresh. There were actually not so much rice in the big bowl, the veggie on top was a bit misleading. Anyway, it would be a full meal if you order this set, and a good chance to taste both rice and Ramen of this shop at the same time. Again, the chicken, though in different shapes, not in pieces as that in the previous set, the flavour was just fair. I just can't tell whether it is pork chop or chicken pieces, with the over-covering of the frying layer outside the meat.
For people who like veggies a lot, and doesnt mind eating them raw, or as salad with your meal, 雞肉蔬菜燴黑醋醬定食 (Black Vinegar sauce on Chicken and Vegetables Set) would be a good choice. Vast amount of vegetables, both cooked and raw for you to taste, a bit Japanese style because they put lotus and green pepper as cooked dish. It's like a mix of Japanese, Western and Chinese Vegetables. The chicken pieces were like those in the 特選大戶屋招牌定食 (Special Ottoya Lunch Set). A bit disappointing though, because the chicken pieces were just too ordinary.
Nevertheless, it is an enjoyable dinner with buddies around, and a comfortable place to sit at night, when it's rainy outside. I would recommend you to have a try, if you want some Japanese atmosphere, as well as a nice place to dine.
P.S. I was trying to make a booking beforehand but was told that weekend dinner time booking is not available. Luckily it wasn't as crowded as that in Causewaybay, or is it just because of the rain, everyone hided in the shopping malls/underground?
