My friends and I dined at Bora Seafood tonight as a celebration of one of my friends' birthday with lots of anticipation. Overall, the food was fine but the service provided was way below standard. As we were going to make our orders, we were not sure what exactly was the second set. As we were going to make our orders, we were not sure what exactly was the second set. As the menu reads, the set is one with Thai Raw Tiger Prawns. We then asked the waiter what actually the meal is and he assuringly told us that it was the kind of raw shrimps we eat in Thai restaurants. With his assuring answer, we ordered two lobster sets and one Thai Raw Tiger Prawns set. Yet, when 'Thai Tiger Prawns' were delivered, we were shocked to find out that they were nothing like Thai raw shrimp but boiled prawns we eat at Chinese seafood restaurants. Given that the prawns were fresh (but they are not tiger prawns at all), we did not say a word of complaint.
The lobsters we ordered were OK as they tasted fresh, but the sauces provided were nothing special. They have 6 sauce choices with 2 that are not spicy, 2 that are moderately spicy and the other 2 very spicy. In fact, none of the sauces were very spicy.
The salad that goes along with the main course was fresh too but it is weird to mix kimchi in green salad.
Everything was alright until we asked the waiter to serve the complimentary cheese cake we had reserved. We were surprised that the restaurant bought Saint-Honore cakes as complimentary cakes. This is not only an abnormal practice, but also an unwise practice as cakes from Saint-Honore are notoriously untasty. I'd rather have one from Maxim or Arome Bakery. The cake was the emoji cake that Saint-Honore is promoting lately but its taste was terrible seriously and it was by no means a cheese cake at all.
After we ate one-third of the cake, the owner of the restaurant Winnie came out shouting in horror at us and said whether we had taken our own cake to the restaurant. I told her no as what I was told while I made the reservation to her in person two days before was that the restaurant would offer a complimentary cake for my birthday friend. After investigation by Winnie, it was found out that the waiter served the cake which was brought there by another table of diners. In other words, we ate others' birthday cake. Winnie continued losing her temper but honestly we were like fish out of water. We had no idea why the wrong cake was served and why we had to bear this ridiculous anger-venting.
Without any apology, Winnie yelled at the waiter and quickly prepared a cake to the other table of diners whose cake was eaten by us. She prepared another fancy cake for them and sang happy birthday to them. But seriously our friend was also having his birthday tonight. Why was there such a strong difference in the treatment? Was it our fault to eat up others' cake? The whole incident was ridiculous.
Not until we had voiced our grievance to Winnie did she start to apologize to us. She explained that the waiter involved did not start working until today. However, this is by no means an excuse for the terrible service, from the prawn issue to the cake issue. We were honestly upset with the whole incident.
Given such terrible service, Winnie offered us a $250 coupon for our purchase next time but then we declined. To be frank, with this terrible dining experience, do you expect us to patronize your restaurant again? Also, when the bill was delivered, Winnie did not do this in person but asked the silly waiter to give us the bill. As the head of the restaurant, I suppose she should have apologized to us once again. We did not ask for a discount, an exemption of the service charge nor any unreasonable requests. What we expected was sincere apology but we were left with immense disappointment.
I do not usually write comments on Openrice but with this ridiculous incident, I cannot help writing this to warn potential diners of the kind of service they would possibly receive.
