My mother and I were walking around Tsuen Wan, finding a place for breakfast when we came across this restaurant. It was not my mother's first time coming and she said that she liked the congee she tried last time, claiming that the taste was clear as if there was no MSG added. This time we both had a pleasant experience and enjoyed our meal. The place may look simple and ordinary but it is definitely a place I will go and eat again.Decor:The place is furnished with simple chairs and tables. Ea
Decor:
The place is furnished with simple chairs and tables. Each table has every condiment you need placed on a tray on it. Although it is just a small traditional shop, the hygiene is still properly maintained. At the storefront you can see the traditional delicacies placed in the cabinet. That was actually the thing that caught my attention.
Service:
It was apparent that the staff treat each other as family. There was always laughter and chatter. Big smiles were shown on their faces and it actually made me feel happier too. They were quick on their feet too. The staff took our order quickly and brought our food to us as soon as possible as well.
Taste:
Sampan Congee- This dish is also commonly called 'boat congee' and costed HKD $15, True to my mother's words, the congee tasted great and was definitely one of the best i have tried. It had this clear taste without the strong heavy punch of umami taste most congees around Hong Kong has. The umami punch is usually a result of added MSG. It would be a calculated guess that this diner haven't added MSG to the porridge. I was surprised at how delicious the porridge turned out to be and certainly will order porridge again next time even though I don't necessarily like congee.
Steamed Dried Shrimp Rice Rolls-Costing at HKD $13, the rice rolls tasted alright for the price. It wasn't the best I have had though. The texture was great and smooth. I could definitely taste and find the shrimp pieces in the rice rolls too. However, it wasn't soft enough.
Ham Chim Peng (Chinese Salted Doughnut)-I am unable to rate or comment on this dish as this is only my first time trying it. It costed HKD $7 and I was really excited to try it. When it was served, it was not as steaming hot as I had wished. However, the texture and taste was mesmerizing. In the treat was a perfectly proofed dough and was not filled with gaps and holes, giving an empty dish. The taste is both sweet and salty but the balance was well done. Would definitely try it again.
