Finally a girls' night out! As a friend is in town for the Golden Week and craving some "Hongkongese" food we decide to go local local and dived straight into this sister shop of the famous Tung Bo Kitchen. We chose this as it was in fact reasonably easy to book a table and according to the reviews on Openrice, in par with the kitchens of Tung Bo. We chose this as it was in fact reasonably easy to book a table and according to the reviews on Openrice, in par with the kitchens of Tung Bo.
FOOD:
- Crispy pig intestines served with sweet plum sauce: not sure if it was because I was late but this was already cold when I tasted it. The skin has therefore gone from crispy to chewy. The intestines were washed thoroughly so there was none of that strong organ taste (which is a pity as I wanted organs to taste like organs). The plum sauce was a bit odd and didn't really go with the pig intestines. (5/10)
- Chinese chives stir- fried with pork jowl: probably the only dish I liked tonight. Well executed in stir frying the greens and keeping the moisture locked in, but probably a bit too heavy on the MSG as I was very thirsty afterwards. (8/10)
- Deep fried prawns rolled in salty egg yolk: this was fried quite well although I suspect they didn't use fresh prawns as j cannot taste the prawn flavor. Nonetheless the salty egg yolk saved the day and made it a good dish to go down with alcohol. (6.5/10)
- Soy sauce chicken: I think we ordered a half chicken but the chicken was so small th six of us only really manage to get one piece each. I don't eat chicken skin hence I am not sure if this dish as suppose to taste better with skin on, but just eating the meat is quite bland. As the shop uses chilled chicken they should really marinade it first. (5/10)
- Grilled fish Thai style: the sea bream(?) was nice and fresh, and beautifully executed such that the meat was tender and moist inside but not sure whether the chef deliberately decided not to crust the fish with salt. The Thai style dipping sauce could have had more depth with more lime and spices instead of MSG. (7/10)
- Fresh squid and noodles cooked in squid ink: my friends a loved this. I personally expected more seawater flavor with the squid ink, but at least the squid tasted fresh and the ink is not stale (as you can get with some not so fresh squid ink). (7/10)
- Rice steamed in lotus leaf : another personal favorite of the night. The rice was flagrant although sadly it was not steamed with the lotus leaf else it would also have the beautiful light lotus taste.(7/10)
SERVICE & AMBIENCE: The setting is probably better than expected given this shop is in the middle of a greasy food court above the wet market. The floor is not too slippery and some chairs actually have backs. Tables are a bit messy and the teapot leaks. Clinking and clanking crockery are to be expected of an establishment of this sort and is suppose to be part of its charms. Waiters are in fact quite prompt with adding hot water to your teapot. What really caught us by surprise is that Tung Bo and this sister shop seems to now come to be know to blast loud disco during dinner time. We had the great fortune of sitting next to the speakers - they were SO LOUD that I can only guess what the person next to me was saying by lip reading.
HOWEVER none of the above would have prompted this negative rating - after all this is a decent place for HK style pub food and hey if you don't like the brain numbing disco music then so be it. What REALLY pissed me off was that the waiters here (a tall young man with blond hair in particular) seems to have a serious case of favoritism. The table next to us were very rowdy and chain smoking AT THEIR TABLE. When we complained to the waiters they were all apologetic but then once they turned their back to our table completely ignored our request to ask the other table of guests to stop smoking. We asked the waiters to handle the issue at least 5 times and emphasized that (1) smoking in covered area indoor is illegal in HK and (2) we have a pregnant woman at our table. I am frankly quite disappointed at the attitude that the shop has decided to take. Although the food was decent given the price point, I will probably not return to this restaurant again.
CONCLUSION: Good only for a young crowd intending to drink and smoke their way through dinner and probably don't care too much about the nuances of their dish.
