A colleague of ours is having major surgery next week, so we thought it'ld be nice to have a dinner together and wish him well. He suggested Sushi Hiro, but the lady said she can only give us a room for 10 people and the minimum charge was $4000... so we opted for another place because we didn't want to eat just for the sake of fulfilling the minimum charge. I thought of Irori, partly because i liked it back when it was on Hennessy Road, and also it was situated near Times Square and easy for people to access. The lady over the phone spoke with a japanese accent (somehow this appears to make the place "sound" more authentic, haha) kindly said that they can only accomodate 10 of us in a room but they will waive the minimum charge of $3000.

The waitresses were attentive in pouring tea for us, and since people drifted in one by one, they were always around to offer us the mini appetizer, eventhough the room was at the far end of the (not so big) restaurant. We had a sandwich of tofu with a ?fish filling, but the tofu was fried and a bit oily and tasted bland. The latecomers had lotus pieces, which was much fresher in comparison.

The waitress offered to divide up some of the dishes into 2 so we have the same on each end of the table. Since we had a vegetarian amongst us, we ordered the following:
1) cold tofu - came with the usual condiments, and the tofu was served in a bit bowl of ice water
2) cucumber roll - not for me, obviously
3) california roll - rolled just to the right firmness, large portions, tasted good but not out of the ordinary
4) soft shell crab roll - similar comment as above
5) grilled eggplant - large portion, not oily or too salty, came with tobiko toppings
6) pumpkin salad - 2 scoops of mashed pumpkin mixed with slices of boiled egg whites, very interesting
7) seaweed salad - quite a large portion, everyone could taste a bit of it, and the slightly vinegary dressing was syrupy enough but not too thick
8) 2 sushi combo - each combo includes 8 sushi which you can choose from a list of about 20, and also 1 roll from a choice of tuna or pickled radish or cucumber, of course we went for the tuna. And since we ordered 2 combo sets, we ended up with 16 varieties of sushi, not bad
9) udon hotpot - each pot can serve about 5 portions, with mushroom, tempura prawn, a slice of chicken, crabsticks and other condiments, with an egg on top to mix in with the soup. Although it wasn't a superb dish and a bit soggy, it was good value for money ($80 if i remember correctly)
10) mixed tempura and prawn tempura - not the best batter in town, but at least it wasn't thick and chewy like HK-style jap restaurants, it tastes good overall unless you're the pickiest of the connoisseurs
11) a beef dish that i picked coz the picture looked nice... it's about 12 slices of lightly seared beef arranged in a circular dish served with a vinegary sauce... the beef was tender and the sauce made it very appetising

we didn't try the grilled stuff, and there seems to be some interesting choices on the menu too: japanese "tung bo" meat, japanese "neen go" pizza, spring rolls (looked like the vietnamese ones), eel and cheese hand roll etc...

we were too full to have dessert, and we also didn't order sake as we were happy with just plain old tea - which they refilled frequently without being intrusive. The dishes were also changed frequently and they provided bowls and other utensils when needed without having to ask them again and again. The restaurant isn't big, but cozy and quiet, clean and spacious enough. The room we had was equipped with a TV, but i think we enjoyed each others' company more.
