at around mid-december 2007, i accidentally (!) found out the date of birth of my dream girl z, and right from that very moment, i've been wanting to prepare sth special on her big day.tott's came top of the list for several reasons... it's got fantastic view; it's a handy spot and z and i could easily head to lkf after dinner if she so wishes; there's a decent floral shop nearby; it's within walking distance to the cake shop of my choice; it's close to ceo and she could actually hear me sing (g
tott's came top of the list for several reasons... it's got fantastic view; it's a handy spot and z and i could easily head to lkf after dinner if she so wishes; there's a decent floral shop nearby; it's within walking distance to the cake shop of my choice; it's close to ceo and she could actually hear me sing (given she's willing and THAT brave); last but not least the restaurant's just minutes away from where i intended to have pre-dinner drinks with my girl .
can't remember when i made my reservation, probably late december or so. i requested a seaview table for two, as far away from the band stage as practicable so that we could have a nice conversation, undisturbed. the lady who took my call was very polite and assured me she'd reserve a table at the far end of the restaurant for us.
z and i had dinner on 12 january to celebrate her b-day and gosh, it was such a hectic day~! i got to cwb in the afternoon hours on saturday, already behind schedule and i went straight to that cake shop of my choice... only i didn't know where it was except the street name. i ended up wondering back and forth in the area, looked crazy and sweated like a pig... i was completely lost, feeling hopeless and all of a sudden bam~! i found it i found it i found it~!
while i was catching my breath and saying to myself "okay then... don’t give up just yet…hope is just around the corner~" i came to realize THE one type of cake i came all the way for had just gone sold out~!
c'est la vie... what can i say? so i bought three other pieces of cake instead (i know one of them's tiramisu, forget the other two... )
having recovered from my heart attack, i rushed to location e, on foot, to have my pre-dinner drink venue set up. it was yet another unfortunate experience... coz the streets were just flooded with ten trillion ppl and god damn, I WAS IN A BIG HURRY~!
thank god i didn't die on my way there.
i got everything set by 7 pm, and met with z roughly an hour later. it was the first time i saw her wearing that necklace i got her as “cheer-up”present…guys i don’t mean to be a big show-off but my girl’s absolutely lovely.
we went straight for drinks and z was delighted to see the venue... it was a very quiet, comfortable place with stunning view overseeing the harbour, extremely relaxing... best part was, there ain't much strangers around so basically we had the entire place to ourselves.
my bouquet for z arrived at about 8:30 pm... it's not a big, massive bouquet with 999 roses in it... instead it was made up of a single red rose, a few balloonflowers, several hydrangea etc. it's plain, simple and absolutely gorgeous (kinda like my z, ooops there i just did it again haha~). my girl was thrilled to see me buying her flowers... the smile on her lovely face i'll never forget.
breath-taking.
we enjoyed our wine, the pleasant view, and each other's company and we simply forgot all about time. i got a call from tott's at about 9:20 pm.
well hell yes~!
so, we headed for tott's and got there just after 9:30 pm. we were led to a nice table by the window, just behind the bar... and it pretty much was as far away you can get from the live band on stage (not that the band's bad... in fact z repeatedly praised the band's performance…and she loved those songs).
the restaurant's got quite an extensive drink list. we wanted to order red wine to go with our dinner but we weren't too sure which wine to pick. our very friendly and attentive waitress joe then came to the rescue, and recommended two different labels for us to choose from. and i must say, joe's a very mindful person, as she politely asked if we'd mind sharing glasses to have a taste of the two wines.
joe... joe... joe... are u kidding me here? of coz not i wouldn't mind drinking from z’s glass~! i never kissed my girl enough that night~!
oh and we eventually settled for merlot.
it was z's first visit to tott's. judging from that big grin of hers, i'd say that she was pretty pleased with the environment, and she was excited about the menu too... my beautiful companion told me that she's fond of almost all dishes they served, hooray~! (it's always rewarding to know you've picked the right restaurant ).
anyway, having browsed through the menu, for starters we ordered some sliced italian raw beef (can’t remember the name…was totally distracted by the view at my 12 o’clock ) and goat cheese to share whereas for main courses, z had seafood risotto and i had pan-fried duck breast with foie gras and mash potatoes.
okay here's the thing... the raw beef was good and i think the permesan cheese that went with it was a nice touch... my angel's risotto... well she spoke very highly of it but i didn't get a taste of that…was kinda hoping i would get fed by someone...
on the other hand the duck breast was very nicely cooked (and my angel agreed), yummy~ the foie gras itself was fried just right, a bit crunchy on the outside but tender inside and went very well with the gravy sauce. so generally speaking, i’d call it a very good dish, nicely balanced......... but hey wait a minute there~! what's that green vegetable sitting on top of the mash potatoes?
celery? no! broccoli? no! believe or not it's CHINESE cabbage (a.k.a. choi sum~!~!~!)
what the heck? i've no idea if that's what they called fusion cuisine nowadays but hey, it's pretty weird for me to find "choi sum" underneath slices of pan-fried duck breasts~
it's not that the veggie tasted bad though, we just found it funny somehow and z and i made a good laugh out of it.
oh, one major point to note was that at tott's, the piece of bread (like an english roll) they served was unbelievable~ it's fresh, hot and we both loved it~ enjoy it with a bit of extra virgin olive oil and basamic vinegar, seriously u can totally fill ur stomach without ordering anything else (the manager wouldn't be too happy though).
we didn't order anything from the sweets menu (coz i've got desserts waiting remember?) and we just checked out before midnight... the bill came up to sth just under $1200.
given the great food, superb dining environment, fantastic service... and the free entertainment…(er that would be the "choi sum" incident haha~) it's not expensive at all and i considered it very reasonable.
on a fair day, i wouldn't imagine using the phrase "romantic dinner" unless i was making fun of someone else. but this b-day dinner i had with z... well i couldn't find a better way to describe it. every single second inside the restaurant, i felt like holding my girl and kissing her on the lips.
yet another best dinner i've ever had.
z, i'm like thissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss glad u loved the things i've prepared for u. i hope u'd find it a memorable night (and that the last piece of cake was also yummy yummy~)
happy birthday my darling... i wish u happy always.
