My fat followers, I'm staying at the Regal Riverside right now. My husband wanted a burger the other night so we went to L'eau Restaurant. At first, I was eyeing the Vegetable Makhanwala in the vegetarian section. Then I noticed a loose page on the table entitled "Halal Menu," and ended up seeing they had samosas with raita (yogurt dip) as well as what was listed in English as a Methi Mattar Malai--creamy peas and fenugreek. At first, I was eyeing the Vegetable Makhanwala in the vegetarian section. Then I noticed a loose page on the table entitled "Halal Menu," and ended up seeing they had samosas with raita (yogurt dip) as well as what was listed in English as a Methi Mattar Malai--creamy peas and fenugreek. Now, I'm a big fan of alliteration as well as large portions and authenticity, so you know I couldn't resist.
We waited for a long time. I was suffering from a migraine and decided to retreat upstairs, asking my husband to please have my dishes boxed up to go. Several eternities later, he returned with a bag and told me that the customer service was the worst in Hong Kong and that his burger had been "interesting." He told me it'd been made from steak that was chopped instead of ground; for some reason, the whole thing was laced with long, stringy pieces of gristle.
So I opened my bag and was suddenly not all that surprised that my samosas looked like a special edition of Totino's pizza rolls and that the raita was missing. It was too good to be true; the Indian chef at my local doesn't even bother with raita and I expected a hotel in Sha Tin to have it. And then there was the box underneath:

Reverse-engineering this dish, I'd have to say the chef started with a can of Waitrose chopped Italian tomatoes with herbs. Tipping the entire can into a pot, I'd guess they then simmered it with chopped onions and a couple of spoonfuls of sugar; the sugar dissolved, I'd wager it was then garnished with some oil and a handful of hard peas. Not an Indian spice was detected, not a one.
Oh, how we laughed and laughed. It was funny enough that I wasn't even upset after my husband told me the bill had come to $430 after the resident discount. But now it's two days later, he's got diarrhea and he swears it's from the burger, so here we are. Don't eat here; and restaurants, don't put things on your menu that you've never had before. What's especially sad here is that the brutal Hong Kong restaurant Darwinism probably doesn't apply, since this is a hotel with a constant stream of visitors from Somewhere Up North, and none of them read OpenRice.

Special feelings after the meal: diarrhea. Note that the "Halal Menu" is not featured as part of the restaurant's online menu at https://www.regalhotel.com/uploads/rrh/restaurants/RRH-Cafe-Menu.pdf.
