Confession: I've been waiting for this opening for quite some time. I heard about it from a friend who text messaged me with a photo of the shop being built a couple of months ago. Then I saw the finished shop last month but the people who worked there told me it was opening in June and they were having a private opening that evening. Located in the quiet streets of Tai Hang, is a small little cafe. All brown with a infamous giant Kitty bow. You do have to queue up as they don't give out numbers. The staff offered glasses of water for people waiting. And later they took out a bench for people to sit while waiting. There was a fan but it wasn't turned on. I'm unsure if it belonged to them or not, but if it is their's ... perhaps turn it on?
Inside the cafe holds around 6 tables. Not very big. There is a bar area where they make the food and drinks. A chalkboard on top was cutely written with items they serve, making it all so cozy.
There is also a cake display. I noticed the cakes were the exact same ones served at Hello Kitty's Petite Cafe in Sogo and once seated, I noticed my napkin said "Hello Kitty's Petite Cafe". So, they are from the same group.
Everything was gloriously decorated with the little cat. The tables, the chairs, the dinnerware. It was great for any fan of the cat!
Service was amazing. The waitress quickly offered me a cold glass of water that tasted sharply of lemon and a menu. Menu was reasonably priced. They served cafe style dishes. As it was lunch time, I ordered the secret garden burger and a passion fruit smoothie.
My passion fruit smoothie was HUGE. It was filled to the brim in a jar like mug. It was fantastic. Lots of passion fruit flavor. Icy cold and smooth. And thick!They didn't put the glass on the coaster though. Perhaps they assumed people will keep the coaster?
Secret garden burger was really small. I mean REALLY small. It was the size of the palm of my hand. Though it did contain a beef patty, fried egg, couple of strips of bacon, two slices of pickles, lettuce and tomato. They used thousand island sauce as the sauce instead of ketchup. I wasn't a big fan of that as I'm a ketchup on burger kind of girl. The bun was nicely toasted. The patty was a bit dry. The egg was not quite done as the egg white around the runny yolk was still transparent. I liked the runny yolk but perhaps a few seconds more to completely make the egg white transparent would a bit more safer to eat. The amount of fries were also rather small. They also tasted like frozen fries and not fresh cut fries as it was a bit soggy and limp with a bit of a spongy texture upon biting into them. I was a bit disappointed the burger bun wasn't the shape of Kitty's face as I did go to the Hello Kitty cafe in Taipei and they make the bun shaped like Kitty's face and is much bigger in size.
I later added a strawberry tart after my meal. From the cake display, there was white plastic Hello Kitty head on it. When it arrived at my table, it was missing. Why did they take away the head?? Besides that bit of sadness at losing a pretty photo moment, the tart was ok. The strawberries were sweet. The cream was lightly sweet. There was sprinkle of pistachios.
Inside the tart was a moist strawberry cake. The only thing I didn't like was the tart crust. It was extremely hard and a problem I find in most cake shops in Hong Kong. They just don't put enough butter to make it flaky.
I later left as a customer outside was making a scene for waiting so long. I felt bad for the waitresses trying to calm this man and quickly finished my meal to offer my seat to them. The place doesn't have a time limit for people to eat like most other popular places so there are a lot people just sitting there, not leaving at all. So, the waitresses did not rush me out. I just felt annoyed at the man who was making a scene when everyone else was also waiting patiently in line. When I left, the wait staff all apologized to me and hoped I didn't feel like I was rushed out. I assured them I didn't feel that way at all as that man was just being unreasonable. Service was top notch.Would I return? Yes, when I no longer have to line up as the drinks were pretty good. The cake was decent enough. But not if I have to line up again.
