Hong Kong has it's fair share of various cuisines. But Mexican has been one of those cuisines that have been sadly disappointing. Not only to me but all my friends who are from North America. There was always something we didn't like: portion size was too small, not enough cheese, not enough ANYTHING and on top of that just plain expensive. There was always something we didn't like: portion size was too small, not enough cheese, not enough ANYTHING and on top of that just plain expensive. When a new Mexican place opens up, we try it out and decide ... not legit, extreme fail. So, when I saw that Cali-Mex was going to open, I was wary. Add to that, when it opened it's doors, I had just returned home from my trip home from Canada and a trip to the US for excellent Mexican and didn't want to set myself up for disappointment.

I came on this day as an invitation to try out their menu and brought along boyfriend who has had a whole lot more Mexican than I've ever had. We arrived at their Wanchai branch (one of many branches from Quarry Bay to Sheung Wan with branches in Causeway Bay and Sai Ying Pun coming  soon).

The restaurant though small has upstairs seating. It's your basic casual fast food restaurant. You order at the counter, pay and wait for you food. Ordering is simple. You choose how you want it (burrito, taco, quesedilla), the filling, type of beans and how spicy you want it.

Though I didn't have a beer, they had a pretty interesting selection of Mexican beer that didn't include Corona.

Jarrito ($38). I did, however, have a Jarrito ($38). This is a Mexican soft drink. Cali-mex had several flavors but I chose pineapple. Boyfriend chose lime. I loved the pineapple one. Usually I don't like soft drinks  but this was pretty good. It had a lot of fruit flavor and really tasted like I was drinking carbonated pineapple juice.

Nachos (+ $40 on top of the chosen filling price). Nachos include refried beans, cheese, jalapeno, pico de gallo, guacomole and sour cream. They also use their own home made corn chips. We had two types of nachos.

Chipotle Pulled Pork Nachos ($128). The chipotle pulled pork was the winner here. It was moist and flavorful.

Original Beef Nachos ($118). This wasn't as good as the pulled pork. The beef was a bit dry and not as flavorful.

For nachos, these were ok and a lot better than many of the other places in Hong Kong. However, it was a bit expensive for chips and toppings. Something I could never understand why something like this can be so expensive.

Tacos. Cali-Mex offers two types of tacos. Soft shell and crispy. Tacos are filled with lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese and sour cream. Serving size is three tacos per person and quite filling. We had two types of tacos.

Fisherman's Wharf Shrimp Crispy Shell Taco ($98). I really liked this.  The shrimp were huge and not diced up. Whole shrimp was given. The taco was super crunchy. Salsa had a bit of a kick..

Baja Fish Soft Shell Tacos ($98). This was pretty good, too. The fish was moist and not dry. The chipotle mayo had a bit of a kick and was tasty.

Burrito. Burritos were served in aluminum foil. It was wrapped in a soft tortilla shell with plenty of rice, pico de galla, cheese, sour cream and beans. We tried two types of burritos.

Angus Steak Burrito ($98). Though not as huge in size as the US, this was pretty decent size and I would have had a tough time finishing this on my own. The steak was ok. It was a bit on the tough side.

Chipotle Pulled Pork Burrito ($88). Again, I really loved the pulled pork. It was moist and paked with flavor. I liked this a lot.

Grilled Chicken Crispy Tortilla Salad Bowl ($88). I really didn't like this one very much. The chicken was dry though the salad greens were fresh and crispy. The salad bowl was hard and a bit on the oily side.

Spinach Quesadilla ($118). Quesadilla come in half portions but if you want a full portion, you add $40 to the original filling price. I love quesadilla and this was a pretty good quesadilla. The filling was sweet and savory. There was also sour cream and guacomole. I love guacomole.

Churros ($38). Good churros in Hong Kong are hard to find. I was pleasantly surprised that these were so good. There are a total of three churros per serving with a choice of chocolate or caramel sauce. I tried both sauces and I liked the caramel sauce more. The churros were crispy and not oily. The only thing would have made them perfect is more cinnamon sugar on top.

I was all set to really dislike Cali-Mex and write it off as one another sad interpretation of American style Mexican. But after eating the items, some of them were pretty good. Portion size was decent. Though prices are a bit expensive as compared to the US, it's still a lot better than other places in Hong Kong that serve Mexican. I would return again.
