There are many seafood spots in HK. For me, Sai Kung is too cliche, outlying islands are not exactly somewhere I would go without a proper day trip itinerary, Lau Fau Shan is totally out of the way. My place of choice is always Lei Yue Mun. For one, it is conveniently located within a 10min drive from exiting the Eastern Harbour Crossing (for islanders) or a 10min walk from Yau Tong MTR station; secondly it has all the vibes of a fishing village to set the scene for a proper seafood feast. Having tried a couple of restaurants inside Lei Yue Mun bazaar, I am pleasantly surprised by our discovery this time. Walking through the alleys in the bazaar, you will find Sea King Garden at almost the very end after passing all the twisted paths. What welcomes you is a “Siheyuan” compound with a huge courtyard planted with humongous bayan trees (I think?) and enclosed by four big houses. How peaceful and soothing it is to start a wonderful meal.
For the night, we first bought a variety of seafood from Hoi Pang Seafood stall at the entrance of the bazaar, another all time favourite of ours, and have them delivered to the restaurant for making. It included scallops (steamed with black beans), giant clams (steamed with garlic & vermicelli), abalones (steamed with dried tangerine peel and soya sauce), virgin crabs (baked in oils and salt), lobster (in cheesy sauce with egg noodles), grouper (steamed, soya sauce).
On side, we ordered crispy fried chicken, sweet and sour spare ribs and chinese lettuce in fermented bean curd sauce from the restaurant itself.
Food was all perfectly prepared with only the virgin crabs being a slight deviation from expectation as they are not in season, not anyone’s fault. Worth special mentioning is the crispy chicken, which has to be reserved in advance. We were told that the restaurant freshly bought a local yellow chicken from the market in the morning, and you could really tell the difference, sooo good, bursting with intense flavour with the meat a teeny bit tougher but in a good way.
The meal was wrapped up plentifully with a suite of desserts, all courtesy of Hoi Pang Seafood and Sea King Garden: fruits plates, sweet pumpkin soup and egg twists.
Service was also great. Our server is very friendly and attentive.
Such a delicious and satisfying meal it was. All only came to $3400 for 6 people, all inclusive! O my, I am coming back.
