I always complain about the lack of sandwiches in HK, but the IFC actually has a number of decent options. The French and I differ on sandwich philosophies. Whereas I prefer deli meat and veggies, this place has, for example, a lobster sandwich, a tuna sandwich, and a beef tongue sandwich. The only thing that really caught my fancy was the le sandwich poulet et estragon-- "chicken, avocado, tomato, artichoke, heart of palm, and homemade bernaise" ($75).

There didn't actually seem to be any artichoke or heart of palm on the sandwich. I could be wrong, but after eating about half of it I opened it up and there was just romaine lettuce. I have written the following open letter to Joel Robuchon:

Dear JR

Where are my thistle and swamp cabbage?

Sincerely,
MJ

There's a reason why they say the English language is the most beautiful language. Getting around to what WAS in the sandwich, everything was quite good. The chicken was tender, the avocado was ripe, the tomatoes weren't cardboardy and the bread-- the bread here is really fantastic. Next time I make sandwiches at home, I'm gonna come here and buy some rolls. The bernaise was probably a bit over-applied, but considering how everyone but me drowns their food, I don't think it was so bad. I'll say: Excellent, A-

My wife got: Le Sandwich Parisien au Jambon-- Ham and camembert, $68. She initially had two worries about the sandwich: that the ham was two thick and wouldn't work on a sandwich and that it would be too cheesy. She reports that it was actually really good. I had a bite or two and I concur-- if you're in the market for a ham and cheese sandwich, you won't go wrong coming here.

Here's my current sandwich leaderboard for the IFC:

1. Salon de The
2. Panino Giusto
3. Open Kitchen
4. City'Super

I've omitted Subway, because that's a known quantity. Anyway, I recommend this place.
