Last night my friends and I had the most wonderful dinner party at this restaurant in the Municipal Services Building (2nd floor cooked food centre inside the "wet market" building in Sheung Wan). We had the following dishes and I could recommend them all but particularly the following:
Salt baked fish It was baked whole and came away from the bone very easily. The flesh was white and firm yet moist and perfectly cooked.
Eggplant with minced beef Very "addictive", once you start you cannot stop. The gravy was tangy and slightly sweet and the eggplant were soft but without being mushy. They retained their beautiful blue purple colour and had none of the bitterness you sometimes get in other restaurants.
Duck tongues Braised in a delicious mix of spices, this tender snack is the perfect accompaniment for Beer. Some of our Western friends were reluctant to try at first, but they all agreed that the taste was very good.
and the ground meat & squid: First time I had a patty where meat and squid were mixed. It was surprisingly good and though you could easily taste both flavours, none of them were all dominant. The patty was holding together nicely but could be easily cut with chopsticks. It neither fell apart nor was it chewy - quite perfect, really. The dish was brought to the table still bubbling and the aroma with the roasted spring onion on top was very good. A delicious dish!
The broccoli with praws added a fesh note to all the meat we had. Those little green buds were perfectly cooked with a little crunch and the praws were succulent and juicy: The sweet & sour pork was surprisingly different in that it wasn't smothered in ketchup and pineapple juice, which was a good thing. The pork was tender and had little or no fatty parts and the gravy was rich but not overpowering. Perhaps it could've had a bit more bell pepper, but I liked the fact that the meat was NOT coated in a thick batter. The chicken dish came with different types of fungus, some of which added a wonderful earty flavour and the chicken was moist and perfectly cooked through (no blood, which is how I prefer it in this type of dish!). The tofu skins were braised with a medley of different vegetables and fungus and I particularly liked the texture of the skins, which was firm yet springy without being chewy. The fish and tofu dish was a mild addition that we chose for those who didn't want too much spice in their food. The fish held up well in the gravy and the tofu was moist and fresh, too Overall we were very impressed with this restaurant. It will definitely feature on my list of "things to do with house guests" in future!
題外話/補充資料:
This is very casual dining and perhaps not for the fickle diner in business attire, but it's and absolute must try for anyone who wants authentic Hong Kong food in a vibrant, authentic atmosphere.
