Though I'm not a vegan (or even a vegetarian), I do take a day off per week to eat something purely meat free. Thus, I'm always interested in new vegetarian options.Green Common is perhaps one of the more well known grocery stores in Hong Kong that offer vegetarian and vegan items. Recently, the Green Common in Central has opened Kind Kitchen. Where Ovocafe once stood, is now Kind Kitchen. I liked Ovocafe but apparently, it wasn't run by Green Common so now it is! I decided to try it out and I dragged my friend along.
Unlike the other Green Common cafes, this one has service. Thus, there is 10% service charge. Menu is in English and Chinese. Though Ovocafe had more menu variety, Kind Kitchen is a bit limited. But I was curious on something called Omnipork. Yes, a plant based "pork" meat.
Amazing Omnipork Balls ($52). Though they have a few items that feature this product, we decided on this. The balls were pretty good. Had the same texture and taste of pork. It said it was to be served with tomato sauce which was definitely not enough. It was just a dab to hold the balls together and was mostly salad greens. I think this dish would have been much better if they smothered this in tomato sauce. Making it more like a Spanish tapa. Instead, I sat there with my ball, wishing there was more sauce.
Viet Summer Salad ($88). A fairly fresh tasting Viet style summer salad. I think it could have been a notch better with perhaps some sort of vinegar style dressing that would mimic nuoc cham. Otherwise, it was fine.
Wholesome Pumpkin Spaghetti ($82). The pumpkin sauce was fairly creamy but the choice of green vegetable was a bit odd. The pasta itself was a bit on the over cooked side.
Overall, the food was ok. It could have been better. For some odd reason, I felt the food they serve at their casual self serve places tasted far better. Here, it was just average. Perhaps it was the additional 10% service charge, I expected more? We did order juice and strangely enough, that was the best item I had! I guess I'll just stick to their more casual restaurants and skip on this until they make their food much better tasting. That was something Ovocafe did really well. Create flavor packed vegan/vegetarian dishes and that is probably why Kind Kitchen is a bit more quiet.
