Egg pudding

This was like a joke. Somehow, I felt like a joke eating it.

Served in a transparent egg shaped container, it was indeed cute. So cute in fact, so small, so tiny, that it was like a toy. When the waiter placed it in front of me, I thought, you’ve got to be kidding me. I had this flash-back of me as a kid presenting my parents with my play-doh creations of miniature food. Dainty servings could signal exquisiteness and value, but in this case, it wasn’t at all exquisite. The surface of the pudding was slightly old and wrinkly, and I presume there was no addition of any overly expensive ingredient that would render it worthy of the description of exquisiteness. And, isn’t egg pudding by definition a commonplace dessert?

After opening the petit toy-like lid and staring at the petit serving of pudding inside, I did a quick calculation – it took 30 seconds after my order to come, and it’ll take me perhaps another 20 seconds to eat. I’d literally be in here 2 minutes tops. You’ve got to be kidding me.

I start eating it anyway, in anticipation of the most amazing egg pudding in the world. My lips touched it and…you’ve got to be kidding me…it wasn’t cold. It was an annoying room temperature. Yet it was obviously pre-prepared and taken from a fridge? It’s a subjective thing, but I hate food at room temperature. It almost triggered my gag reflex. And what about the taste? It was like… egg pudding! I honestly don’t know why I was half anticipating to have my mind blown. I had ordered egg pudding for heaven’s sake. Perhaps it’s because I’ve heard so much praise about it. So I was expecting to be dramatically surprised, to be able to think WOW this is unlike ANY egg pudding I’ve tasted! My bad.

And I knew there was meant to be caramel or something at the base. I didn’t know it was watery caramel. Watery, opaque, like water, but thank god it tasted like caramel. But then this kind of overwhelmed the egg taste of the pudding. Yeah, the pudding did taste eggy but not so eggy it was mind-blowing. So don’t expect to be mind-blown like I was, or the joke will be on you. Do expect to feel like a giant holding a giant spoon eating ordinary egg pudding that’s either pitifully small or pretending (and failing) to be exquisite.
