今天是端午節,自己也曾經是龍舟健兒(雖然不是精英選手),未曾試過在赤柱比賽,剛巧知道有朋友去拍照,於是跟著一起來湊熱鬧。大清早到達赤柱,已經人山人海。選擇了最近龍舟比賽的這間大排檔吃早餐。從衞生的角度而言,這裡當然不合格;從現代人所謂「集體回憶」而言,這些本地飲食文化當然不可取締,小本經營的食店在市區內已經買少見少。之前看過食評,好壞參半,所以對食物的質素沒有太大期望。點了餐肉蛋公仔麪、沙爹牛肉公仔麪、奶醬多士、凍奶茶和凍咖啡。已經 N 年沒有吃公仔麪了,不懂得分它是真是假。朋友說,從它的質地和味道(再加上我們在檔口門口垃圾箱看見有很多公仔麪包裝袋),相信也沒有做假吧。沙爹牛肉呢,不行,可能是因為醃料放得太久,已經看不見鮮牛肉色,然而又沒有沙爹味,肉質亦很粗,像浸過水的牛肉乾。反而餐肉幾好(留意到檔口內有很多食客都點餐肉),所以朋友「送」了一點給我。飲品和多士,正常的味道,但不會令你回味。幸好價錢適中,總的來說還算是合理。這間是本地典型的大排檔,如此聞名,相信是因為赤柱沒有其他港式茶餐吧…

This place is actually pretty famous. Everyone around the neighborhood or the students studying nearby definitely know this place.
The store is basically hidden behind a fruit stall at Stanley Market. It's a really small and crowded place nor is it a comfortable place. What makes it so popular despite all of these not-exactly-favorable conditions?
Let's start with its most famous food - the French Toast.

Nothing special as it looked, you would soon find it not ordinary after you've had a bite of it. You could probably immediately feel the difference at the instant you took a bite of it. You should find it fluffier than most, and more importantly, even though it's freshly fried, it did not taste oily or too heavy at all. Such fluffy texture is due to the unique cooking method of the French toast. It is said that the toast is first soaked with egg yolks and is then spread with egg whites which are beaten to stand. With the butter, surely it was absolutely a pleasure to eat and you need not to add syrup at all. Yet I think it would even be better if the outer layer of the French toast to be crispy.
One of the characteristics of Hong Kong style food is that they are made from very simple ingredients. It proves that not only expensive ingredients could create satisfaction, and the following food, which is no longer very common among Hong Kong style restaurants, is undeniably one of the best examples - Toast w/ Condensed Milk, Butter and Sugar.

It's such simple ingredients yet it's so devilishly satisfying. The crunchy sides of the toast, with a mild buttery aroma, plus drizzles of hearty condensed milk with the addition of sugar on top...it totally gives you a huge sense of pleasure and satisfaction but as well as a sense of guilt. It's so hard to not love this. I'm glad to have found this here, and allowing myself to indulge in it once in a while.
We had two dishes involving bread as the main component, and there's no exception for the third dish as well. Not many has recommended this or even reckoned its existence I suppose. I'm going to assure you that this one is absolutely stunning and tremendous. It's a sandwich, but not those common sandwiches such as ham and egg where you find everywhere. It's the Satay Beef and Egg Sandwich.

I am never a fan of white sandwich bread. If I'm having sandwich of white sandwich bread, I always require it to be toasted. However, for this one, I still totally adore the sandwich even without the bread toasted. To me, I think the sandwich is flabbergasting. The satay beef is extremely savory, and with scrambled eggs in between, it gave an alluring sensation. Both components stood out in the sandwich, both very distinct and strong and savory, yet neither of them would overtake another and dominates the flavor. It doesn't sound any special but it's really stunning once you've tried.
Last but not least, a Hong Kong style meal couldn't miss out a cup of milk tea.

Milk tea is also one of their signature items and I now totally understand why it's so popular. I have always considered Hong Kong style milk tea is actually not easy to control to make a good one. The flavor is stronger in Hong Kong style milk tea and it's crucial balance the proportion of the tea, milk and sugar. I had an ice milk tea and it tasted like heaven. I loved the mild aroma of the tea and a smoothing texture from the blend of the milk. It is sweet in a way that you seem not to be able to pull yourself out once you started drinking. The flavor and aroma of the tea may not be as strong as authentic ones but it succeeded in making you feel addicted to it by being very well balanced. It's the subtle sensation that overwhelmed me.
Every food item here are just from simple ingredients, but this place really did a terrific job in making good use of these simple ingredients to combine and create a superbly satisfying and pleasurable sensation. Even though the place and environment may not be exactly ideal, with such talent and skills to create such indulgence, you have to admit that it's hard to not love this place.

首先來一碗餐腸一丁,原先好有期望,因為見到隔離枱的賣相很好。

最後先來的就是"咖央西多士" 即做的,落單時姐姐已經話依個要等耐d,可能因為係出名的食物,又多人叫,所以要等。
由於hk很少地方有咖央食,所以得知這裡有就好期待來試,慶幸沒有失望,坊間的西多士好多油,個包又乾,但這裡的就好軟身又唔會太油,中間就會好軟身,好多蜜糖,但外圍的蜜糖就少左,應該係落蜜糖時唔夠均勻,但都很好味,只是如果咖央醬可以再多些,就會完美些。

今天赤柱遊, 下午4:00, 已經覺得好肚餓, 又見到這裡咁多人排隊, 於是上來check下有咩咁好食啦~原來這裡的西多士最好味, 排隊都要啦~不過我們一排就等了半個鐘.......未入去食已經係門口食飽風.......終於可以入去啦, 地方好迫好迫, 根本一個人位都比兩個人去坐.......點了奶茶+紅腸+腸仔出前一丁+咖央西多士:奶茶: 好香滑, 我要求多奶, 老闆說一陣比罐奶我自己落, 真係好正~因為係黑白淡奶呢~感覺好似大家樂的奶茶咁(70分)紅腸+腸仔出前一丁: 普通一碗出前一丁而已.....沒甚麼特別(70分)咖央西多士: 西多出面好有蛋味, 但又唔似出面茶餐廳的那些d蛋乾晒~都算ok啦, 不過就無乜咖央味lu(70分):地方坐得迫迫........d野又貴, $14一杯熱奶茶都得.....兩個人今次埋單都要$5x, 只不過食了一碗公仔麵+西多.......排咁耐隊真係唔抵

通常出面食GEH西多都係漲卜卜,厚厚地~~~但今次見到薄薄地,又冇糖漿供應.

咦~~果然冇呃我WO~~~ 唔駛糖漿味道反而剛剛好,好合我心意,唔會太甜~~

入嚟食個飯行街, 揀咗呢間聽講好出名o既大排檔, 環境只係60, 70年代啲大排檔咁, 唔係咩新鮮嘢。我自己叫咗餐蛋麵, 熱奶茶, 同友人夾份叫咗個西多咁。餐蛋麵賣相已經唔掂, 個蛋煎到爛晒, 影響咗食慾, 個碗太細, 裝湯唔多, 食慢少少真係連湯都冇埋, 雖然見佢係用一丁麵煮o既, 但係又唔俾埋包麻油嚟, 麵好似有少少煮過火, 總括嚟講唔係咁好食囉。西多中間應該係夾咗伽央, 但係唔係想像中咁好味, 唔係好明白點解咁多人俾讚最好都算係杯奶茶, 叫咗少甜, 除咗聞到茶香, 仲飲到啲茶味添~試過就算, 冇咩嘢唔會再食喇~

泗益 is a pretty famous dai pai dong in Stanley. Equipped with just some basic tables and chairs, and dim lighting, it's probably as ghetto as it gets. Not recommended for the super neat freaks or germaphobes! As usual, I ordered my beloved HK style milk tea. Usually other restaurants don't add the sugar to the milk tea since it varies by the person's taste (you add it yourself), but this one comes with sugar already and the sweetness is just right. As usual, I ordered my beloved HK style milk tea. Usually other restaurants don't add the sugar to the milk tea since it varies by the person's taste (you add it yourself), but this one comes with sugar already and the sweetness is just right. This place also serves hot vitasoy in glass bottle! Ahh memories of childhood. I'll want to get that next time.

This place is famous for their Hong Kong style french toast with kaya sauce (咖央西多士), so I ordered one to try. Traditionally, Hong Kong style french toast is filled with peanut butter on the inside and glazed with syrup on the outside. By filling the toast with the kaya sauce (it's a Malaysian coconut jam), the advantage supposedly is that you don't need to dip the toast in syrup because the jam is already sweet enough. Is it healthier? Well the whole thing is fried so I don't think you're saving much calories there.

I must admit that the french toast here is very light and fluffy. There are places that over fries it and all you end up with is a hard crunchy crust and small portion of bread. As you can see, the proportion here is just right. I hear that instead of just dipping the toast in egg, this place whips up the egg white and applies a coating to the outside of the toast before frying it. I actually saw the owner (shown below) whipping up the egg white by hand after I ordered, so it took a while before I got my food.

Umm maybe it's because I'm not used to it, but I really didn't like the kaya sauce. It's too sweet and after taking a bite, my milk tea didn't taste sweet anymore. I think the reason why traditionally peanut butter and syrup works is that the saltiness and the sweetness balances each other out. It's too bad - I really like the texture of the toast here but prefer peanut butter and syrup instead.

They also serve some basic HK style cafe menu items like sandwiches, instant noodles, etc. - it's nothing you can't get anywhere else. On the weekends, there's usually a pretty long line - not sure if it's worth the wait.

今早和太太到赤柱泗益吃早餐,環境很臟(和數月前去分別不大,我還記得問老闆要最普通的西多時,他目無表情地說"西多要等九個字(45分鐘)",令我印象深刻)。太太點的腸仔煎蛋通粉變成火腿煎蛋通粉,而通粉充滿雪櫃味,她吃之如受刑似的!我是不會再光顧的了。

朋友知我去赤柱行下~推介我黎泗益食西多~朋友本身話都幾隔SIT下,但我又覺得幾易搵WO~一落小巴到巿集行幾步就到架啦~但門面真係幾,....特式地舊下,HAHA同埋真係幾爆下~要等位~如果夏天等位果度又熱都會幾辛苦好彩唔係好熱咋E+!一坐低就話無哂豬排同埋牛肉本身LE2樣都想試下架!!]無奈之下就點左咖映西多~凍奶茶~熱狗凍奶茶有D維他奶果隻奶味,又唔會太甜~都OK既!個包烘到脆脆咁~即叫即整唔會有出面果D凍冰冰!唔錯!招牌咖映西多~咖映我係第一次食!幾特別~不過有D漏~但都值得一試!好味道!不過真係有朋友一齊SHARE食先好~

久久都未入過赤柱, 看罷大家的介紹後, 決定和友人入赤柱品嚐下著名的咖央西多, 豬扒包結果一試難忘熱騰騰的咖央西多, 出自於一個對食物有堅持的廚師手上一落單後, 就立刻聽到廚師打蛋,發蛋, 放入油中炸的聲音等了一會, 咖央西多就出現眼前一咬下去, 西多十分鬆化, 真的非常美味!!!看見鄰桌點了一個豬扒包, 我們也點了一個結果, 又讓我們發現另一個驚喜豬扒十分香脆, 外層的熱狗包十分鬆軟望望四周, 雖然店內十分簡陋, 卻有著本土的大排檔情懷試問, 香港還剩下多少這些大排檔

一如介紹,有著香甜咖央夾心的西多士,完全不用加蜜糖,已經很香夠甜;而多士部份是異常的鬆化軟棉,不是誇張,直的有點似吃棉花糖的感覺,而且吃來富有濃郁蛋香,的確美味! 然而鬆軟的代價是,西多士吸收的油分也特別多,頭一啖不錯是很好吃,但來到第二件已經開始覺得漏,一客兩個人分,都有點嫌多呢!
