Savoury Canapes, Boiled Potatoes, Micro Vermicelli, Assorted Chutneys

Boti Kabab
Grass Feed Beef Tenderlion Chunks, 48-hour spicy marinade
Tandoori

Naan,

Gajar Halwa & Rabdi
Gulab Jamun
Black Carrot, Whole milk, Dried Fruit, Nuts

My friend reserved a table for 9 pm, but when we showed up table wasn't ready, which isn't that unusual. But after waiting around for over 40 minutes (when our food order was already taken) and being told (for 20 minutes of that time) that our table was getting ready to leave, I went to check and saw that the table hadn't even been presented with their bill.

We were eventually seated at 10 pm, when our moods were already not great. A free 'shot' (consisting primarily of juice) does not make up for an hour long wait for a booked table.

Because of this, there was some confusion about whether we were being offered the round of draught beers we had while waiting on the house. But regardless, bottom line is a restaurant that makes its customers wait an hour on a booked table should most certainly try harder at keeping its customers happy. Or tell them that they can't honour the booking, at which point we would have certainly been able to go elsewhere.

The food, in fairness, was decent quality Indian food. Probably even good by Hong Kong standards. Not stand out though. Compared to other places like Tulsi (Quarry Bay), Serendib (Sheung Wan), Black Salt (Sai Ying Pun, though not strictly Indian) and some other smaller places around Nathan Road, it didn't sing on my palate (I grew up in Malaysia and then the UK so think I know good Indian food!) as really good Indian food does with its spicing.

Anyway, when it got to paying the bill, there was then a big disagreement over how many beers had been promised for free or not. We were only ever disputing the 5 beers we had out while waiting (they said only the second round was on the house, and not the ones while we were waiting an hour *eye roll smiley*), not those for any additional people that joined us at the end (because we were so late that people we would have been meeting elsewhere had to come there).

Regardless, the whole experience put a sour taste in our mouths. Not to mention it was my friend's birthday (his first in Hong Kong).

Honestly, I am not out to get free things from restaurants (you can read my numerous other reviews here and on a well-known international trip review site) but I get annoyed at restaurants that don't understand you're paying for the experience and don't seem to appreciate how frustrating it is to be made to wait that amount of time for a booked table, then are so arrogant as to threaten customers with calling the police.

For the money they are charging, there are certainly plenty of other restaurants that will give you food as good or better, along with great customer service. Perhaps you'll be more lucky than us and have a much better experience.  But I wouldn't count on it.
Other Info. : The paratha (fried flatbread) I had was heavy and dense, rather than the more flakey layers of dough that I expect (actually, even frozen supermarket ones were better). The naans looked much better though.

OVERALL - decent. SUGGEST - keema pao, chicken tikka masala, naan.

How I rate: awesome > decent > meh > terrible.

Horrible Service ... Food is below mediocre ... Ask for their Gin based drink Indian Ocean with Bombay Sapphire and i was told it does not come with Bombay Sapphire. What i got was a freakin cucumber based drink with almost no Gin at all. Their specialty naanza had burned veggies with too much salt. Over all very disappointed.

We explained what happened and he immediatily said he would take care of it.  In the back ground we and the rest of restaurant could here her yelling that we were rude.  We were in no way rude...just asked for the food in the order we would like to have it.  The manager and the waitress came to the table and no apology just the waitress telling us again that we were rude.  At this point we lost our appetite and said we were willing to pay for what we had but were finished.  The manager would not not accept our money which we appreciated, but more importantly we just would've liked an apology from the waitress.

Based off this experience, we will never go to Bindaas again.  There are better Indian food options right in the area.

Snack on popular street food from different nooks and corners of India." Think high-end small plates, with lots of carby fried things.

The restaurant is relatively dark. On a Tuesday there was live music, and the band contained a white woman with dreads. My wife remarked that the music was "white woman with dreads music." Some songs I recall: Tracy Chapman, "You've Got a Fast Car"; Bob Marley, "No Woman No Cry"; and David Grey, "Babylon".

There are three main sections of the food menu: "Street Corner," "Small Plates," and "Curries and Mains." We ordered only off the first two. "Street Corner" consists of three sub-sections: "Pao," which the menu describes as "very similar to the Chinese 'bao'," "Naanza," which is a portmanteau of 'naan' and 'pizza,' for reasons I'm sure you can imagine, and "Chaat," which is kind of a catch-all term for a savory food cart snack. We got one of each of these, plus two things off the small plates menu. It was too much food.

The pao (from Portugese 'pao,' frequently 'pav') we got was the keema, "minced goat, green peas, binaas spice blend" ($128). You get two soft rolls, which are not very similar to Chinese bao, but more like a cafeteria-style dinner roll, and then a pot of goat and peas. "Sloppy joe" was what came to my mind. I was a little disappointed, as I couldn't really tell that this was goat. If you told me it was beef, I would've been 100% sold. I think the spices ultimately mask the flavor of the meat and then the roll isn't all that great.

This is from the small plates menu, the 'Dosa' Chili Cheese Roast ($98), "Mini Rice Pancakes, Cheese & Chili Stuffing, Red & White Chutney, Gun Powder." I liked this. It had a decent spiciness, a nice cheesy flavor, and came in a dosa wrapper that was floppier and less crispy than a dosa. It's not must-try, but it is good.

The naanza we chose was the khurmi, "Medley of Tossed Vegetables, Indian Herb Mix" ($118). We wanted to get some vegetables in the meal. The naanza is a piece of naan, this one pretty thick and dense, covered in a topping and then I think mozzarella cheese on top, though the menu says "cheese mix," so maybe something else as well. I couldn't really identify the vegetables, because I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention, but I do think I got some kind of pickly green pepper at one point. This is a large menu item suitable for a meal for one.

It comes on top of puri, an unleavened, fried bread that is airy and crispy. On top of that is mashed potatoes and chutney, both cold, and sprinkled with sev (the 'micro vermicelli'), crunchy chickpea-flour noodles. I think I liked this least: cold mashed potatoes are just not my thing.

The final dish of the night was the Hat-Trick!, "Battered Cottage Cheese - 3 Shapes
Crusts & Dips" ($118). I take back my earlier comment, this was what I liked the least. Deep-fried paneer is just not any good. Paneer is already pretty low-moisture and dense, but this is dry as the desert and dense as the Earth's core. Or something. There's no cheesy meltiness, no cheesy tanginess, just dry flavorless nothing that makes you wonder why you're even trying to eat it, until you give up and don't.

I'll admit that I was fairly disappointed in this restaurant. We tried to make a meal of small plates, but the small plates menu consists mostly of, on the one hand, meat, chicken, and seafood, and on the other hand, starchy things like potatoes, pancakes, and patties. We wound up with a meal that was pretty heavy everywhere, and I don't think that's just bad decision making on our part. We didn't order off the "curries and mains" section, but my guess is that's the best place to find a balanced meal here. Total bill was $850 for the above, two cocktails, and two beers.

3.Mutton Saagwala

Other Info.
