Located on a side street next to the busy street market in Wan Chai, the restaurant looks and feels like a wine bar with mainly bar counter seating and two regular tables. Unfortunately sitting in a high chair at the bar wasn't very comfortable plus the restaurant was a bit cramped overall with limited space between seats. Lots of wine bottles were stored cleverly on the ceiling in racks as they try to maximize the limited space in the restaurant.

For dinner, the restaurant offered a 4 course tasting menu for $448 with an optional wine pairing for only an additional $100! We decided to go for that so we didn't have to choose and it was a great way to explore what the kitchen has to offer.

Beef Tartare ($79) - I really wanted to try the beef tartare so we ordered this on top of the tasting menu. I love beef tartare but it will usually cost at least $200-$300 in HK for decent ones. Not only were the price at Le Bistro Winebeast reasonable, the quality of the beef tartare far surpassed my expectations as the beef was chunky while nicely seasoned (though we thought it was a bit heavy-handed with the mustard). We broke the yolk to mix it thoroughly with the beef and the result was just heavenly. For the price, this beef tartare was unbeatable! [4.5/5]

Ravioli of Duck Confit (5/5) - served with parmesan emulsion, the ravioli was very impressive with its paper-thin skin and flavorful fillings. As I dug my spoon further, I was pleasantly surprised to find a sweet potato, ginger and lemongrass puree on the bottom of the plate which served as a perfect contrast to the rich parmesan foam with its sweet and spicy flavors. As it turns out, the chef likes to use a lot of Asian spices in his dishes.

Brandade de Morue (4/5) - with pounded salt cod, potato puree, espellete pepper condiment and green apple julienne. The flavors were well-balanced and light while we found that the chef had used lemongrass in this dish as well which elevated the aroma and flavors of the puree.

Rossini Beef Fillet (3.5/5) - we ordered the beef fillet as medium rare as recommended but unfortunately the beef was a bit tough. I think it has to do more with the cut of the meat rather than the cooking. The pan-fried foie gras and black truffle jus were fantastic though as the flavors were just right while the browned vegetables were deliciously sweet.

Candied Chestnut (4/5) - served with layers of vanilla emulsion, coffee ice cream and crispy ginger bread, the chestnut puree was rich and thick while the creme anglaise was silky smooth! The coffee ice cream was a bit hard though and could have been stronger in flavor to balance out the sweetness of the chestnut puree.

Wine Pairing: Rivesaltes Chateau La Casenove Tuile 2007

I am not in the habit of writing reviews, but this tiny little Bistro Wine Beast in Wan Chai does deserve coverage.
Four of us just experienced the October menu, which if I am not mistaken offers four of each, starters, soups, main courses and desserts.
Even though most of us added some salt to the pork rillettes, they were excellent, not overly fat and very tasty. We enjoyed that at the bar as an aperitif with a bottle of Rose de Provence, whilst we waited for our table, which was all of 5 minutes 'late'. This being a Friday evening, my friends had taken the worthwhile initiative to book. Since the whole place consists of about 20 covers between the bar-counters and the tables, a booking is indeed recommended. Oh! Ah! And the bread! Real, French style country bread, superbly fresh and tasty, an essential accompaniment for the rillettes. That same bread will of course be served throughout the meal. Only missing - although they may have been available, we didn't ask - were the cornichons (gherkins).
We then shared a terrine de foie gras, accompanied with 4 glasses of sweet white Jurançon, a must for most foies gras lovers. The terrine did not disappoint, it was tasty, cooked and seasoned to perfection, a true pleasure. It came with delicious, toasted slices of brioche and the most exquisite onion jam (probably shallots, actually, which is even better).
Three of us had the home-made duck confit as main, served with potatoes sautéed in duck fat (to die for) and small pieces of various fruit, very slightly cooked if at all - a beautiful and so fitting addition. The fourth guest had a bavette, a magnificent piece of beef, less tender than fillet but oh! so much tastier. It was cooked to perfection (blue, as requested) and was accompanied by the same sautéed potatoes. We enjoyed a good red Bourgogne with the main course.
More than satiated after all this, none of us had ordered any dessert. Our hostess then presented us with a crème brulée to share (which was more than sufficient). Flavoured with vanilla ‘de Bourbon’ (from the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion) and perfectly cooked and caramelised, I must admit it was yet another pleasure, even for me although I never eat desserts. We finished with 3 espressos.
And by the way, the special gesture from our hostess, the crème brulée, was just another of the niceties we were showered with from the moment we entered the little bistro. The hostess (owner-manager) and her staff are all so charming, smiling and knowledgeable that you never would want to leave – and of course you’ll want to return ASAP.
Don’t go there on the day you want a quiet atmosphere, comfy armchairs and sophisticated crockery. But if you are looking for a true French bistro in HK, this is THE place. It is noisy and simple, but charming. The menu is small, but the food is authentic – with some original and very welcomed ingredients added to traditional dishes – and truly delicious. The wine list is quite expansive and, as already noted by most reviewers, sold at retail prices, which makes it a bargain in a restaurant. The only item missing from my native Paris are the grumpy waiters (yes, I know a few good ones, too, even in Paris).
The bill? Well, I didn’t manage to pay my share, but I believe I saw a total just over HKD 2,000. And that’s with almost 3 bottles of wine for 4 guests. Value for money? Yes, that’s definitely another tick in the top box.
I came all the way from Sai Kung just for that meal, and I’ll do it again soon.
Other Info. : Book if you can, even if some guests who arrived later than us and didn't seem to have a booking got seats at one of the bars fairly fast.

The set lunch menu ($150)  includes a soup, main and a drink at a reasonable price. The soup is regularly changed and today ours was a gorgeous Carrot and Galanga Soup. The presentation was unexpectedly intricate for a lunch menu - with vivid summer colors melded into a soup - as was the thoughtful combination of the sharpness of horseradish cream with the rich luscious sweetness of the carrot soup base. This is definitely a pleaser!

The Beef Filet was ordered medium rare and satisfyingly juicy although the seared surface was a bit harsher than warranted. On the side, the potatoes were charred to perfection and had the pleasant texture of a simmered taro. The sauces complemented the meat and potatoes well, having a flavor reminiscent of soy sauce and gravy but with a sweeter side.

The Pork Tenderloin was well textured but may have needed more marinade on the meat which largely depended on the sauces for flavor; not entirely a bad thing. The sides were the same as with the beef filet. One notable feature of the mains is that there are spring onions sprinkled on top, not quite a common garnish for non-Chinese cuisine, but did add to the color and presentation if not for the flavor. Chinese influence from the wet market nearby?

My order of latte was misheard as a regular coffee, to which I didn't object since our time was up and the next diners were anxiously waiting outside. A small imperfection, but good overall nonetheless. Tip: remember to book, it's quite popular!

We just moved back to Wan Chai two weeks ago and happened to walk by Le Bistro Winebeast. Intrigued, we went there for dinner tonight.

They have a short menu, which is good (a small place like this can't handle dussins of dishes): Just four main courses if my memory serves me right.

But what dishes!

We shared their Salmon Ravioli for starter, a dish with its base firmly in the French/Italian cuisine, but with a hint of South-east Asia. Perfectly prepared raviolis stuffed with smoked salmon, placed on a bed of artichoke cream, and with lardon broth poured over.

For our first main course, we picked grilled seabass and ratatouille. Crunchy skin on the fish, cooked to perfection, on a bed of a ratatouille of sorts: Finely choped veggies cooked to create a harmony.

Our second main course was confitted beef cheeks. So tender, so tasty. Just go get it already!

For dessert, we picked the dark chocolate dome and the bread pudding. While the chocolate dome was very good; a semi-spere of chocolate on a somewhat crunchy chocolate pastry with warm milk emulsion poured over it. The bread pudding was completely different from all other bread puddings in the world: Caramelized brioch smothered in salt butter caramel sauce with blueberries, strawberries, and vanilla icecream on top. It knocked the chocolate dome out of the ring!

The service is very attentative and beyond knowledgable, with great wine pairing followed by a good (and not too long) description of the selected wines and their traits.

Just go there already!

We were welcomed in by the sommelier with a huge smile and led to comfy red seats on the bar counter. The menu is short but appealing! My friend went for the plateau de charcuterie and seabass, while I went for the homemade rillettes and seared tuna topped with foie gras.

We sipped on complimentary wine glasses while mibbling away our appetisers. The homemade rillettes was absolutely mind boggling; reminding me of my childhood in la douce France.

As we chatted away surrounded by a beautiful dislay of wine bottles, our main courses arrived. The dish was so delicately prepared it made my eyes water. But it was just exquisetly tasty...so much so that it is hard for me to find words to describe it.

My friend skipped the dessert but I couldn't and ordered the white chocolate soup to satisfy my curiosity. How would it taste? How would it look like? Once again, I wasn't disappointed at all when the charming chef Yohan presented to me.

My friend was excited and eager to come back with all her gang as the food is excidingly good and the cherry on the cake being the wine sold at Winebeast prices. However, I look forward to my next time for both the food and the chef!

Some friends and I had a great meal at Le Bistro Winebest recently. It's tucked away near Wanchai market, near the new Avenue residential complex and is cosy and interestingly decorated.

The sommelier and maitre d' is Cristina and she's attentive, without being intrusive, friendly and welcoming. This is the place for unrushed great food and great looking food.

Firstly we shared the oxtail broth and salmon ravioli. The broth was light and flavoursome with a good kick of mustard and shredded pieces of beef and vegetables. The ravioli was shaped like a wanton, with a large amount of light, melt in the mouth salmon inside. The ravioli starter portion was  large and filling so be warned if you only have a small appetite!

Next we had the grilled confit of beef cheek. Not sure I've ever had beef cheek before, but it was crisp on the outside and again melting in the middle, accompanied by perfectly cooked and presented vegetables.

Although, we had no room, we had to try dessert. We shared the bread pudding (loved it, esp the caramel sauce), the white chocolate soup- again delicious and the special of the day- millefeuille- again light and delicious.

We didnt have wine this time as it was lunchtime, but all dishes come with wine pairing suggestions, courtesy of Cristina, with a great value by the glass list. Whole bottles are sold at the same price as the nearby Winebeast retail wine store. Oh and menus change regularly too. Definitely worth a visit!

This restaurant is very welcomingThe lady who is also the sommelier is just one the best in town. She can give you advice on everything with heart and honesty. The cook knows what he is doing, the dish are very well presented and they taste just as good.We ordered a foie gras terrine to share, two main dishes and two desserts + a bottle of Saint Emilion 2009. The steak tartare is prepared in the best way i.e. cut by the knife.
The pork loin was very well presented.
The profiteroles were to die for.

You have to go.

It is not often i come across a restaurant that i hesitate to share, fearing that lines will form and my chance of getting a table will be affected. Well, this restaurant will probably fall into this catagory. The restaurant is tiny and only have 3 tables. The restaurant is tiny and only have 3 tables. But what it lacks in appearance it certainly makes up in Food, Value and Service, and that is hard to come by these days. The operation is managed by a nice couple with Vanessa on the floor and her french husband in the kitchen. The hostess is genuinely pleasant that she made me felt good even the table was not ready when i arrived. The food is as authentic as you can find in any bistro in France. Best of all, the price really put a smile on your face. Where else in this inflationary city can you still get a decent french dinner prepared with heart for $300?

For start we order a SMALL portion of Steak Tartare ($79)and the portion is enough for ladies to share. The beef is pinkish and fresh, hand chopped into tiny pieces and well seasoned with balanced flavors of saltiness and citrus.

For the main I opted for the Seabass with glazed vegetables and ratatouille ($188). The fillet was generous and tender and the skin was still crispy. The ratatouille is not overly cooked in tomato paste so the natural sweetness is still present. The crunchy texture and the tender meat makes a delightful and healthy dish.

For dessert I choosed the Bread pudding with salted butter caramel and ice cream ($68). Unless elsewhere, the chef uses brioche that is toasted. The crispy skin and the soft centre mixed with strawberry abd ice cream simply make your heart warm.

The local restaurant scene is fierce with competition. But i am sure that this nice couple can win your hearts with their rare passion about food and service! Good luck on getting a seat there.

Other Info. : If you like wine you should order wine from their wine shop nearby and consume it without corkage fee.
