The Botanist100% botanical breakfast with homemade carrot cake muffin, organic breads, quinoa-kale scramble, red beets, eggplant caviar, hummus and chia seed pudding把各樣健康食物拼在一起的The Botanist,賣相精緻。

The Botanist
100% botanical breakfast with homemade carrot cake muffin, organic breads, quinoa-kale scramble, red beets, eggplant caviar, hummus and chia seed pudding

Avocado Toast
with citrus cumin salt, organic chia seeds and extra virgin olive oil

Almond butter berry

4/5 - The Angler:(左至右)

Le Pain Quotidien,

The other dishes we got were just plan disaster. The prosciutto tartine which was supposed to come with buffalo mozarella came without the cheese, and with a friendly hair on it. Not great. So we sent it back and got a new one, which tasted alright, but not good enough for the price - $128.

They had exceptional customer service though - the staff were friendly and super nice. Now they just have to get their food up to speed.

Man, I really love crunchy fresh baguettes.

There's something special about lathering a heap of room temperature hand churned salted butter on a fresh baguette that captivates me.

Sometimes, when I go to a restaurant and there's a fresh crunchy baguette on offer, I make the mistake of filling up on bread and ruining my appetite for the pending meal!

As much as I love bread, it's nowhere near as much as Alain Coumont, the mastermind behind global phenomenon Le Pain Quotidien; "the daily bread". Coumont opened his first Le Pain Quotidien in his home of Brussels in 1990, with his fanatical approach to producing the absolute best 'daily bread' leading to a global empire that as of today stands at more than 200 outlets, including a flagship bakery on Madison Avenue in New York City.

Coumont had always been around food, his grandparents owning a restaurant near Liege in Belgium and his father was a trained chef, so it seemed natural to continue in the same vein. After training at the same hotel school that his father attended, he eventually deviated slightly to become a baker as opposed to a chef.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

It's not completely surprising that Le Pain Quotidien would open in Hong Kong, after all, practically every major brand in the world can be found here. What was surprising, was to find that the first HK Le Pain Quotidien would open at The Avenue in Wan Chai, a place that I will very shortly call home!

I'd been keeping a close eye on the developments at The Avenue, watching as Le Pain Quotidien slowly took shape, eventually to open under the tag of 'soft opening'. A soft opening is a way for a new establishment to open up with a reduced menu, to get a feel for their operating rhythm and expose customers to the brand before the 'grand opening'. When you go to a soft opening, you usually expect to encounter teething issues, in fact this is very normal.

I was lucky enough to get along to the early days of the soft opening and have lunch with Alain Coumont himself.

An unassuming man, there was a quite intensity about his demeanour and a look of quiet satisfaction as he surveyed the packed dining area and queues forming. When I asked him where his drive and inspiration came from to develop a global brand, he simply smiled and recounted his desire to produce and share the bread that he remembered from his youth.

Le Pain Quotidien is much more than a bakery now, much more than a global brand, it's a destination where you sit and enjoy a comprehensive menu that includes options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There's no doubt though, that at heart Le Pain Quotidien is a bakery - fresh daily breads line up in baskets and croissants and other pastries abound.

On the day of my visit, I sampled some of the tasty options on the 'limited menu', the best of which were beef and veal meatballs in a rich and tasty sauce as well as some of the tartines that seem to be oh-so-trendy right now.

As good as they were, it was the simple crunchy baguette with lashings of wonderfully salted butter that really excited me most. I'm absolutely certain that like the stereotypical French national, walking around with a crunchy golden baguette (a sight which was common on my recent trip to Paris), I too will be a regular at Le Pain Quotidien, securing my daily bread!

FINE. whatevs.

got seated in the patio area next to smokers. whatevs.

ordered 3 dishes - the quinoa salad, meatballs and the leek soup.

Let's start off with the quinoa salad - this dish had no taste so we asked for more dressing. Again, the server cluelessly looked back and forth at us and the salad 2-3 times before walking off to grab us more dressing. Dressing was tasteless too btw.

Next dish - meatballs. this dish had taste to it (thank god!). but its something I can make at home. Nothing memorable at all. At times the meatball would be way too salty. Plus, it was 3 meatballs for the price of 200+........seriously

Last dish - leek soup - the highlight of the meal. NO TASTE. If they didn't state it was leek soup I would've confused it for lukewarm water. let me repeat, LUKEWARM. Not even HOT.

This meal in total costed around 4-500 and I would definitely not recommend coming back. Would not even go back in 2 years if it was still open.

Meatballs a la Liegeoise:

Other Info.

3. the Farmer- $148.presentation ok.

I’m a sucker for anything cinnamon, and their swirl is not a let-down with rich, buttery bites in every mouthful. Reasonably priced as well at HKD22. An unhealthy, but great way to start any morning.

Anyone who has passed by this quaint bistro at The Avenue will know how attractive their patio area is, and will understand why I just had to give dining-in a shot, even though nothing on their menu really appealed to me. Their dine-in menu mainly consists of all-day breakfast items, baked treats, sandwiches, and some hot food. I’m not a breakfast person, so yes, I may be biased.

I’ll cut to the chase now. LPQ is expensive. I’m a pretty cheap person, but if the dining experience is worth it, you will not hear a single complaint from me. Unfortunately, this was not the case at LPQ. For their prices, and the kind of menu they offer, I not only expect the food to be flawless, but service to be decent.

Let’s start with the food. We had two tartines. The Curry Chicken and Cranberry was pretty good, I’ll hand them that. Fresh bread was generously coated in a thick, creamy curry sauce. The curry was mild, and aromatic. I think I would have preferred it if the curry was actually spicy, but I’m just nit-picking.

The second one we had was the Avocado and Spicy Shrimp, which was mediocre at best. The avocado spread was bland, not a hint of seasoning. Shrimp was definitely frozen, chewy and NOT fresh at all. If I’m paying HKD100++ for a slice of bread with shrimp on it, that shrimp better be so fresh, it be wiggling on my plate. It’s completely ludicrous how some establishments completely rip off their customers because they stand behind a “name brand”. Overall, the food was slightly disappointing and severely overpriced. If you enjoy tartines, I would definitely just jaunt a few stops to Central to Tartine.

Now, let’s get to the service. A key trick to spotting if a restaurant has terrible service, is to just observe the managers. If the managers are just standing idly around, letting their staff do all the work, LEAVE. LEAVE NOW, or be terrorized by the horrors of mediocre service that await you. I’m still kicking myself for not leaving, when I noticed this at LPQ.

We had to wait a good half hour for our food to arrive. And mind you, the restaurant was maybe only 60-70% full at this time. Yes, 30 minutes, for someone to spread ready-made curry sauce and avocado and shrimp on two slices of bread. If I knew I had to wait that long, I would have asked my 86 year old grandma to make me one. It would have taken maybe 5 minutes longer, but at least it wouldn’t have to pay HKD200+ to endure a half hour of hunger pangs.

Needless to say, we alerted the staff, who went to follow up with the kitchen. When we did not hear back within 5 minutes, we decided to speak to the manager, who neither apologized nor acknowledged the situation… gave us an “O RLY?” expression, and walked off. At least, the waitress apologized…

Also, there were two managers during the time of our visit. Someone solve this mystery cos I cant’ figure it out. Why would a restaurant need TWO managers who do absolutely nothing? This is even tougher to figure out than the Da Vinci’s Code. For the ENTIRE duration of our meal, I did not see either of the two managers do anything other than waltz around the patio area, go out and take a smoke in full view of their customers.

At one point, one of the managers was even yelling and ordering the staff around. That definitely added to the dining experience. The noise from nearby Johnston Road with its trams and traffic was not enough, the yelling really helped improve the ambience. Like really, didn’t Managing101 teach you to never air your dirty laundry in front of your customers?

Fellow Openricers, I paid the price of not listening to fellow reviewers who all complained about the service. “It can’t be thaaaat bad”, I thought. Well, it was THAT bad, and actually WORSE. There are so many better options, like Passion, who deliver much better value and service. I might come again, just for the pastries to-go, but never again to dine-in.
