The Pawn is a restaurant I constantly keep tabs on since its opening a decade ago. It's a place I have a lot of admiration for due to its historical background (former pawn house) and having the contemporary cuisine by Tom Aikens on top of that is just the icing on the cake. But things have been noticeably trending in the wrong direction during my recent visits and I was hoping to see some improvement at lunch today.Last time when I was here, the kitchen was really young and that got me worried.

Last time when I was here, the kitchen was really young and that got me worried. Turned out my worries were substantiated as the food delivered was nowhere near what it used to be. But I'm giving them a second chance today. Let's hope things are already back in order.

Pan seared cod fish, herb crust, mushroom ragout, pearl onions - This really exceeded my expectation especially after pretty so-so starter. They did a great job on the cod fish with that crispy crust and I thought the mushroom ragout and cream sauce worked really well with the fish. Very nice.

Unfortunately, I was running out of time before the start of my afternoon meeting so I reluctantly passed up dessert and went for the bill instead. 

Some thoughts on the dishes here this afternoon. I thought it's a step in the right direction and I definitely look forward to coming back again sometime soon.

The full English was bland and dry. The minute steak comes with an obscenely large hash brown, which while tasted ok was not required to be so big. The steak was tasty but overcooked being quite dry, this was a far better dish than the English breakfast however.

The desert plate was fun, but not enough to redeem the main courses

Finally it was very much service without a smile, felt unwelcome and added to the poor experience

All in all, very underwhelming wouldn’t recommend or return

This is a fun casual place to grab a drink and a light snack. The restaurant has a fun vibe and it was clear the crowd were all expats. In fact, I didn’t see one local in there. Drinks were tasty but on the pricier side, as expected at a joint for expats. We ordered snacks and it took forever to arrive and had to chase down the waitress whom told us waiting such a long time is normal.

I honestly don't know if it's simply the fact that meat dishes here are better than fish dishes (I.e. we ordered the wrong things) or it's the fact that they have inconsistent qualities. Either way won't be good news for the restaurant. I would still give this restaurant another try in the future but I have to say this meal was rather disappointing.

We went to sit on the balcony, but it seems to be popular with the smokers, so we found a comfy lounge inside and ordered a beer, a cider and a dish of Fried Yam chips and Lemon Yoghurt.
The yams (sweet potato) were perfectly cooked and the yoghurt was amazing with lemon zest perfectly infused throughout. A great accompaniment to an afternoon drink. Would definitely come back! Sorry no photos as my phone ran out of battery from taking touristy photos all day.

Personally I like The Pawn because everything is just about right. The overall presentation of the food is fine, but not overly fancy, the price is just in the acceptable range for its quality and the service is pretty attentive but not too overwhelming.

The food was also pretty good. I especially liked the quinoa salad and the iberico pork chop, those were delicious. Less impressed by the mussels (but in all fairness probably not the best season for mussels now) but the chips were very very good.

The general environment was also pretty cozy making it a great place to relax and hang out on less formal occasions/meals.

I'd happily come again to try the remaining of their dinner menu.

On another note, I thought the food tasted good and the desserts were pretty good too.

The sofa seating is strange because if there are two different people sitting on the couch...and one person moves, it will affect the other person...and they are not necessary the same couple...and this is also the case for the back to back sofa arrangement, when someone moved on one couch, it moved the other...

Separate the couches...better yet, remove them entirely.

Before they poured the soup in, I got a glimpse of this busy-looking dish that also featured scoops of poached pumpkin, honey yogurt, flower crumbs and last but not least, some toasted pumpkin seeds.

This tasted pretty darn good, especially on a chilly day like this. It made my stomach a tad warmer (Grade: 3.5/5).

Slow-cooked cod fish - On most given days, I would have gone with the roasted chicken roll in a heartbeat but not today. Not when the medical report for my regular check-up was still sitting warm at home. Oh yes, I have made a renewed commitment to eat healthy again!

I was in need for something a little more plain and less oily. And that pointed to the direction of their slow-cooked cod fish. This was pretty bland (as one could tell from the color of the fish) but the coconut lemongrass risotto with edamame and lotus root chips made it slightly more interesting (than it really was)  (Grade: 2.5/5).

The Pawn's tiramisu - Okay, I was supposed to stay away from dessert but I couldn't. I mean how could one hide from a dessert menu that is highlighted by their signature sticky date pudding and The Pawn's tiramisu.

I knew this was going to be a deconstructed tiramisu all the way and I turned out to be right on the money. On top of the mascarpone cream, chocolate sponge (no ladyfinger) and coffee jelly were a scoop of coffee ice-cream and espresso granita. It was fairly decent but somehow I found the sweetness and bitterness not harmonizing each other as well as I thought they would  (Grade: 3/5).

I think I have said it a few times here already - The Pawn is more suited for dinner than lunch (coz the lunch menu offers very limited choice) and looks like I was spot on again.

一天假期都沒有的3月,實在有點難耐,所以每逢週末都去找美味Brunch慰勞自己,也不算過份吧!今天又給大家介紹灣仔 The Pawn 二樓 Kitchen 的 Free-flow brunch ($498起),頭盤、主菜很有水準,甜品任吃,加上Kid's play area及免費兒童餐,非常推介給家庭客! 不過兩兄妹才懶得理環境美不美,小孩一看到場中間的 Kid's Play Area,就馬上興奮尖叫,並急著脫鞋進去大玩特玩了!除了七彩繽紛的地蓆、迷你帳篷、積木玩具、車仔玩具,場內又有非常耐玩的煮飯仔玩具,所以兩兄妹在這 Kid's area 的時間,遠比在餐桌上多,太好了!

The Pawn 的炸魚用上原件鱈魚、點上他他醬更添滋味,獲得識食Matthew激讚;同上香又脆的粗薯條也非常好吃。芝士焗通粉看來小小一兜,但卻非常有「深度」,而且芝味濃郁、美味之餘相當飽肚,大食兩兄妹也未能徹底清光呢!

遲收工的爸爸也來了,趁兩兄妹吃到半飽去玩,兩口子好好的撐檯腳吧!成人$498 Brunch 包括任飲汽水、橙汁及smoothies,$598則可加上 Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial、Bloody Mary、紅白酒、支裝啤酒、蘋果酒、支裝水、fruit punch、咖啡/茶任飲,比較之下當然是後者更划算,大家都來杯粉紅香檳慶祝週末來臨吧~

Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial 實在太好喝,侍者又非常主動的密密添酒,兩口子到底喝了多少杯?真的數不清,加起來應該有一整支?除了香檳外,也點了一杯橙汁與兩兄妹分享,口味清甜也很好喝!老公也試了一杯白酒,之後又回到香檳懷抱,哈哈~

Brunch 的頭盤也上檯了,首先是 French toast, blackberry caramel, vanilla blackberry mascarpone;神級多士 BREAD, ESPRESSO & 在香港開幕了,甜魔媽媽還未抽空去排隊,但這份多士也有一半的神奇,特別當搽上香又滑的 mascarpone,質素真的很高~

另一份 Brunch board-Ricotta, crushed avocado, spinach salad, crab meat, grilled vegetables 也內容豐富而美味,最棒是可以重溫超好吃的 Ricotta 芝士,搽在脆多士上,那份美味及滿足感,尤勝豐富的海鮮併盤!牛油果多士加上鮮甜蟹肉,又是無敵好吃組合。

熟悉甜魔媽媽的朋友,都知道我不會放過 Egg Benedict;水波蛋蛋味濃郁又流心,配上肥美帶焦香的煙肉、香濃荷蘭汁,以及熱暖鬆香的muffin包,滋味甚是美好,再呷一口粉紅香檳,這就是幸福了!

喝了太多酒精,肚子根本承受不到太多的大魚大肉;另一主菜點了 Fish pie,中間又三文魚又鱈魚又青口,份量比預期中巨大,還好可以帶來玩餓了的兩兄妹一起分享魚肉及薯泥,才不致浪費太多~

成人的 Brunch 有 Unlimited refill for puds platter,即連帶小孩也可無限任吃甜點。還是那句,喝香檳都喝飽了,還好甜品都是小小一件,其中焦糖燉蛋、芝士蛋糕、朱古力撻都值得推介,可以個別要求 encore 的!
