This two level fusion yakitori restaurant is packed with people once the sunsets. As it is always full, we got there a bit early at around 1900 to avoid waiting. The yakitori all tasted really delicious. I am a chicken lover, and my fav is the chicken oyster, super tender boneless chicken. I was also expecting the chicken and egg rice. It was delicious, I love the crispy chicken skin on top tog with the soft and moist fried rice. A place I would go back for!

Anyway,

Fushion

FOOD
For the two of us, we ordered quite a few yakitori: thigh, breasts, wings, fillet, meatball.
Our favorite by far was the meatball which is ground meat with tare/egg yolk sauce. We absolutely loved this one. The others were ok but nothing really special.
We re-ordered a couple of yakitoris as the portions in itself are "cheap" but rather small.
I guess that's the trick with tapas/yakitoris restaurants. The price looks decent but you need many orders to fill out. In the end we had five each.
Alongside the yakitoris, we had the concumber salad which was fresh and crunchy and the sweet corn tempura that were so so (a bit too sweet to my taste).

SERVICE
I don't know how many waiters, runners and bartenders they have but it's quite impressive.
I found the waiters to be knowledgeable and pleasant.

AMBIANCE / DECOR
That's really what you come here for. The music is popping loud, lots of motown stuff if i recall correctly. The place was pretty packed, it's noisy and buzzy.
The decor is rather simple, almost minimalistic if you really pay attention but i guess somehow it works.
I like the bar area much more than the lower floor which tends to be a bit smokey.

The big downside is the no-reservation policy and the wait time. We waited more than one hour standing, drinking yaki lime before getting a seat. It's so popular i guess people don't mind but you have to be ready for this.

In the end, Yardbird is still a must HK experience.

Corn tempura - There aren't much flavour but just the original taste of the corn. They usually give you one tempura per person but girls may prefer to have one for two people each to avoid given it's friend food

Oyster - It's not seafood but a part of chicken. According to the waiter it's the muscle right at the joint in between the thigh and hip. The texture is very nice and they just come a lemon or you can choose to add the chilli flakes that yardbird seasoned themselves.

Wings - The wings are cooked well without much oily parts.

Pork belly - The skewer came with some spring onion and a yauzi sauce. The sauce is nice but it was slightly over cooked.

KFC - Fried cauliflower with spicy sauce~the sauce is tasty but very hot for me.

Shishu duck fried rice - This was on the special menu and it was superb.
I usually don't eat shishu but this combination is very good and  I just wish they will put it onto the main menu.

走時還送上小包辣椒,很窩心,I'll be back!

On the left: my friend’s ‘Bloody Kim Jong-Il’ which is a spicy version of a Bloody Mary. Sounds weird but it was surprisingly refreshing! My friend ordered a virgin though so I’d think the alcohol version would be more exotic
On the right: my ‘Jolly Rancher’ [Ume/Shisho Infused Rice Shochu & Watermelon]. I ordered this mainly because I was sweating bullets from the long walk up the stairs but I found this drink more sweet than refreshing. Not bad, but nothing too extraordinary about it (unlike the Bloody Kim Jong Il)
Before the visit I actually wrote down a small list of things to order here (since their dishes are tapas-style I had quite a long list). The bartender/waiter chuckled at my list but took our order anyway. He also suggested half orders for some of the dishes since he thought we wouldn’t be able to finish it. I really appreciated that as we didn’t even know half-portions were available!

As you can see the presentation was very impressive. I couldn’t tell how they managed to bind the loose corn pieces together, but whatever they used it was very lightly used so I didn’t get any doughy pieces inbetween the corn. The corn was fresh and tasted very sweet so not much seasoning was needed (they mentioned only salt and pepper on the menu).
Speaking of seasoning, I have to say their house made shichimi powder is very good. It isn’t the regular shichimi blend so there is more depth to the flavour. Fortunately they sell these by the bottle at their grocery store (Sunday’s Grocery) I’ll be sure to buy a bottle next time!

This is one of their signature dish, and very deservingly so! While the crust is more bready than what I’d prefer, it went well with the sticky sweet spicy glaze. Perfect for people who don’t usually like cauliflower!

‘Meatball’ – Tsukune and Egg Yolk in Tare sauce

This is a more classic Yakitori dish with traditional preparation. The chicken was moist and did not feel greasy, but what made the dish for me was the delicious sweet tare sauce with the rich yolk. While it feels a bit wasteful to me (from restaurant’s point of view) to serve one yolk per skewer, it definitely worked in elevating the dish.
‘Oyster’ – which is really Chicken Thigh meat

I believe they named it Oyster because the idea is to make chicken meat so tender & succulent it should resemble eating an oyster. And they definitely managed to achieve that! While it looks like a simple grilled chicken skewer, it was cooked JUST RIGHT with the skin crispy & smoky. The thigh meat was juicy as expected and I had no trouble eating the two morsels all at once.
Rice Cake – with furikake & seasme

We ordered this as a filler dish as we were worried that eating skewers alone wouldn’t fill us up. This certainly did the trick and I was VERY impressed by it. The rice cakes were coated by a thin layer of caramel so it is slightly crispy when I bit into it. The texture was phenomenal! Crunchy skin with gooey rice cake center for every single piece. Also using furikake was a good choice – prevented the dish from being too sweet and I couldn’t stop eating piece after piece.
Unfortunately my friend had a weak jaw and thought this dish was too chewy and tiring to eat -.-
Brussels Sprouts with black garlic & crispy garlic

Brussels Sprouts are usually a hit or miss, and this was a definite HIT! I LOVED this dish, perhaps mainly because they were generous with the garlic. The brussels sprouts were grilled to perfection so the sweetness came out. While the sprouts were a bit charred, it did not taste bitter as the aromatic black garlic offset any burnt taste. The crispy garlic added some crunch which I loved. Awesome dish!
The total came out to be $621 without any service charge. But since their service was very attentive and thoughtful we decided to tip them 10% anyway.

Anyhow, I highly highly recommend this restaurant. Their dishes are simple but the executive is excellent! Not to mention good service and just generally a great vibe all around. Only complaint would be the location and it could be difficult to get a table. I will definitely be back!

Other Info. : However, the waiting time is not friendly and worst was having to wait for 90 mins long then almost some dishes were already sold out, what a disappointment. No service charge in this restaurant, but for HK I do not think this is an attractive point because to pay service charge is a well accepted concept here.

I don’t usually go for restaurants in the who’s who list but I kinda like Yardbird. I have always wanted to come back to Yardbird after the first time I tried it in 2012. It suits us that this place have a no reservations policy, as we arrived a little before 7 on a Thursday evening. To start off, I had a ginger ale to quench my thirst. The brand offered here is Wilkinson, which is a japanese brand that I never tried before. It was dry and gingery, without being too sweet. I likey much! Recalling that the corn tempura served here were quite good, we ordered them again. Since the main dishes here are grilled skewers of all parts chicken, we randomly ordered a bunch. On top of that, we got the scotched egg and shisho duck fried rice.

My favorite dish of the night is definitely the chicken liver. With a smear of tare and sansho, it was grilled to perfection. Slightly crisp exterior that breaks open to a wobbly interior which is rich in taste. Oh wow. I can eat this every day. Coming to a close second is the scotch egg. The version here is very well done, with a runny egg yolk and a crunchy exterior. The drizzle of kewpie mayo adds to the richness of this dish. I am gonna try making this at home one of these days! The damper dish of the night is shisho duck fried rice. The pungent sent of shisho leaves (which was sprinkled liberally over the rice) did not quite match the actual taste of the rice. In simple terms, what you smell differs largely from what you taste. That was kind of odd to us. As always, the yakitori dishes here are largely good to excellent. Most interesting item we got that day was the chicken rib, which was thankfully deboned already. From the skewer itself, you won’t realise that is the rib area, but the chewy texture gave itself away. Fat Man enjoyed that very much. I don’t mind coming back to this place every now and then as I feel the food is mostly well executed, albeit a little on the pricey side.

Yardbird specialises in chicken robatayaki where a large part of the chicken is dissected and grilled for customer's enjoyment. Besides from skewered chicken, they also offer a variety of appetisers and salads, larger plates for sharing are also available and don't forget to look at the board for specials of the night.

To start we ordered sea salt sprinkled edamame and their recommended corn tempura which they kindly served as a half portion of two pieces. The edamame was nicely boiled where it was not too mushy, but the corn was definitely a standout! Arriving as two pom pom balls the outside was lightly battered and biting into it revealed an abundance of loose corn kernels. So good~

For robatayaki we only ordered a few to share since we had some larger dishes coming. The chicken breast was surprisingly succulent, the liver nicely juicy, while the hearts were typically bouncy in texture. I had also wanted to order the chicken oysters ( two circles of dark meat at the back), but unfortunately being so late in the evening they had sold out

Spying mussels on the menu piqued our interest and asking the server for more details we were informed they were blue mussels from Canada. Served in a piping hot iron bowl there were lovely and tender bathing in the most aromatic tart sake soup. So delicious we could barely keep from spooning the hot soup into our mouths~ Highly recommended!

Wanting something more meaty other than poultry, we settled for ox tongue. A mountain of mixed greens arranged on top of grilled ox tongue slices. The ox tongue although flavourful was more chewy than I expected, but it was still decent.

To finish up we ended with the mixed mushroom risotto. This was amazing~ Again served in an iron pot, it was a small mountain of slightly cheesy rice infused with the most mouthwatering aroma of earthy mushrooms. If only this was served earlier, I would have eaten more than my share

Luckily there were still seats by the time I got there and we chose to sit at the bar where we got to check out the bartenders in action. There are two levels for seating apparently and we chose to sit on the street level as it was brighter and more airy. Besides the bar, there were also several tables next to the ceiling to floor windows, which was great for people watching.

As we sat down, we were handed a drinks menu first which was extensive from beer to whisky to cocktails and shochu. I ordered my favorite drink for eating Japanese food -umeshu - while my friend ordered beer. Before taking a look at the food menu, I already knew what I wanted to try based on previous reviews.
Our waiter recommended that we start with 2-3 starters between the two of us, followed by 4-5 yakitori per person and finish off with rice. He also recommended that we order everything at one go as some popular items can run out.

There was also a special menu on the wall behind us but we stuck to the basics first since it was our first time here (as recommended by our waiter as well~).

My umeshu (plum wine) was forgotten at first but after my inquiry, it came quickly on the rocks as requested. They had two kinds of umeshu - one was sake-based and one was shochu-based. I opted for the sake-based one as I wanted something that was sweeter. My umeshu was slightly sweet which was nicely balanced by the taste of the alcohol. It was very flavorful, which was a relief as I get some rather bland and watered down versions at other restaurants sometimes.

My friend was satisfied with his beer as well, which was an ale by one of the microbreweries in Japan. It can be hard to find as most places carry only the big brands so it was nice that Yardbird carried these microbrewery beer as well.

After our drinks arrive, our food came out one by one:

Sweet corn tempura (8/10) - the corn came in a shape of a ball and each piece of corn was held together loosely by the batter so it was easy to bite into it. I like that the batter was barely there so one can concentrate on the corn. The corn was juicy and flavorful, which was nice to warm up our palate and start off the night.

Yakitori Wings (9/10) - the secret is in the shichimi! We were given a bottle of shichimi for our own seasoning if needed. The skin on the wings were nicely seared so it was crispy while the meat was juicy. The skin had been heavily seasoned with shichimi, which gave the wings a spicy flavor. I love to squeeze some lemon juice on top to help balance the spiciness and add some acidity to the flavor!

Yakitori Inner Thighs (7/10) - these were rather plain and disappointing compared to other dishes of the night. The meat was not as juicy as the oysters and the seasoning with only salt and pepper was not as flavorful as the wings with the shichimi. Would not get these next time.

Yakitori Oyster (10/10) - these were AMAZING! Apparently this is some hip area of the chicken and who knew hips can taste this good! The skin was seared perfectly so it was nice and crispy. The crispy skin contrasted very nicely with the juicy and tender meat. It was like an explosion of chicken heaven with every bite, and one of the dishes we wouldn't mind having again and again. We thought that this was better than any of the yakitori we've had in Japan.

Yakitori Meatball (10/10) - another scrumptious dish! The tsukune (meatball) came with tare sauce with an egg yolk that we were supposed to mix together. The tsukune was soft and tender with bits of onion mixed inside for texture. The tare sauce, which was like sweet soy sauce coupled with the yolk, complimented the flavor of the tsukune very well. I especially like the hint of yolk that was evident in each bite. My friend's commentary was that this was better than any that he's had in Japan, which is a bold statement coming from him as a Japan fanatic.

KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower) (10/10) - last dish of the night and we finished strong! These were highly recommended and no wonder! I'm not a fan of cauliflower (or any veggies for that matter), but now I am! Haha. I couldn't even tell that these were cauliflowers at first as they were covered in batter and thick sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The batter was thinly coated so it was not oily or thick. The sauce was very yummy as it was spicy hot yet sweet at the same time! The outside was slightly crunchy while the cauliflower was steamed so that provided for a nice contrast in texture. Don't forget about the lime provided as that enhances the flavor as well. I hear that this dish can be ordered with chicken as well so that's what I would want to try next time!

It was a very satisfying meal overall at Yardbird. The ambiance was hip and chic while the service was excellent. My friend said that the wait staff were having a pow wow right before the shop opened. The staff here clearly loves their job and it shows with the level of service. It's so important to have good training of the staff. Each waiter we spoke with were very knowledgeable on their drinks and food. Now this is what I'm talking about! We felt like we were back in New York again.

It's safe to say that Matt Abergel, the owner-chef of Yardbird, knows something about Japanese cooking. After all, here's a guy who has worked at the 3-star Michelin Japanese restaurant Masa in New York for an extensive period of time and was later the head chef of Zuma Hong Kong.

But Chef Abergel's latest project, Yardbird, was a little different this time. Instead of sushi and oden, this place primarily serves Japanese style skewers covering every part of a chicken from neck and liver to knee and tail.

Yardbird was launched back in 2011 and was an instant hit becoming the hardest table to get in Soho. Not only has it created a buzz in the culinary scene of Hong Kong, it has also garnered serious attention from around the world. That was reflected in the inaugural edition of the Asia's 50 Most Restaurants in 2013 in which they beat out some stiff competitions in becoming 46th best in Asia.

There is a no reservation policy at Yardbird so a long lineup was expected on any given night. But much to our pleasant surprise, we were seated only 5 minutes after passing through that door.

 Yardbird Caesar, 3/5
The proper way to order for a party of two, according to our server, was to first grab one starter to share, then about four to five skewers per person and finally finish with one main course and then one rice.

And so we followed his instructions carefully by starting with the Yardbird Caesar salad. Shredded lettuce and cucumber topped with seaweed, crispy anchovy and miso sauce. Not your typical Caesar salad but it was nevertheless very refreshing and enjoyable to our taste buds.

 Breast, wasabi, soy sauce
, 2.5/5
Skewers were next. We were told by the restaurant manager that the chicken "oyster" is the best part of the chicken but what a shame they were all sold out by 8pm already.

Instead, we settled for their chicken breast that was served with wasabi and soy sauce. Disappointingly, the chicken breast was more on the hard side and the seasoning was a little flat even with the addition of wasabi and soy sauce.

 Fillet, yuzu, miso, 2.5/5
Honestly we couldn't tell a chicken fillet from a chicken breast. The only differentiation was the sauce itself. This one was a lot more flavorful with yuzu and miso but still the culprit was the "roughness" of the fillet.

 Wings, sea salt, shichimi, 4/5
We were just glad to have seen the last of chicken breast / fillet. Chicken wings were next and this was very good. Each of the wings was roasted with sea salt and shichimi. That was a yakitori classic!

 Meatball, tare, egg yolk, 5/5
The "meatballs" were rumoured to be a must-try here and they were absolutely superb. Minced chicken meat was mixed with a little bit of soft bones and then roasted to perfection.

A special homemade sauce (tare) and egg yolk combined to provide the perfect finishing touch.

 Razor clam, shichimi, 4.5/5
We tried two non-chicken dishes here and the razor clam was easily the better one out of the two. First and foremost, the portion was quite generous and what a surprise to have razor clams baked with shichimi.

Absolutely delightful!

Pork belly was our other non-chicken dish. The texture was a little chewy but I liked the finishing with spring onion and a thin Ponzu sauce.

By the time we finished our skewers, we were already too full to take on another main course and rice. So a small sake before settling the bill.

It is the bar area with several extra tables as you enter the restaurant, and the main dining hub is located at the basement. Funky music blasting, table settings sleek and simple. Servers are international, very personal, extremely relaxed, exceedly friendly (... and - as bonus: charming and good-looking too HAHA!
).

The food here is simple but tantalizing. No over-complicated ingredients; their food is straight up, to the point and just good. Extensive range of yakitori - chicken only; you would be amazed by the creativity and basically have a chicken anatomy class. Name it: thighs, breast, wings, neck, heart, oyster (dark meat near the thigh), tail, skin and knee. Ah, but no chicken feet.

To start with, we had the Sweet Corn Tempura. Fried as a tempura, but not oily at all. The many sweet and crispy kernels were clustered into a cute battered ball. It totally exceeded our expectations as each exploded
in our mouths shooting out delightful and fruity sweet-corn juice. Salt and pepper were sprinkled over it for a light savoury touch. Loved it to bits!

Next up - our first yakitori - the wings. It is not too difficult to make nice wings; but it is tricky to make really good ones. This was cooked to perfection - grilled with moisture retained in the wings and crispy skin, smoky with a hint of sea salt and topped with shichimi which really brought out the simple chicken flavours. (The server brought us a small bottle of shichimi seperately - just in case we wanted an extra sprinkle. I did!

Now this is the knee. Basically it is like the soft-bone of chicken, except that we both agreed that this was better than the usuals. Spot on and rather addictive balance of crunchiness and chewiness.
Apparently marinated in sake (couldn't really taste that), but it did display nice aroma of garlic. We enjoy muching through this - yummy!

I ooh-ed in excitement as we were served the meatball. Each skewer came with a bowl of thick tare sauce with a bright-orange egg yolk. Mix it yourself, then submerge your skewer in the pool of sweet soy sauce. The sauce was alluring thick and syrupy; it stained all over the meatball effectively. The meatball was very flavourful itself and tender; I loved its juciness.
 Absolutely delicious!

Now - this was the the fabulous and flaming KFC (in full: Korean Fried Cauliflower). What worked was not just the lovely spice which lingered over my lips and tongue like a passionate hot kiss.
It was hot, spicy, sweet, tangy. Sesame showered all over, the crispy ball was infused with this addictive yuzu chilli sauce and coated over the crunchy cauliflower - the texture was purely awesome. Add a gentle squeeze of lime, for the extra citrusy kick. I could not stop licking my lips; memorable!!
(You could request to have KFC with chicken. Our server recommended us to stick with this original cauliflower version though. No regrets.)

We then ordered more skewers - now this is oyster. Not oyster the shellfish, but "oyster" - round piece of dark meat near the thigh of the bird. Despite simple seasoning with sea salt and lemon, the artful grilling gave tinted skins with succulent flesh. It tasted amazing with the skin attached.

There are some specials that Yardbird offers every evening (look out for the board hanging around) - we ordered the thigh of the day (different from the "thigh" on the regular menu which would have been marinated with welsh onion and tare). Each piece was very tender and displayed gentle aroma of ume (japanese plum). This skewer was topped with shiso which added a delicate hint of bitterness and mint.

By then, we were stuffed; though we still had the rice cakes!! It was a rather gigantic portion (for just the 2 of us) (I wonder whether they do "half" portions for this). Each rice cake was slightly glazed and toasty on outside with a soft, chewy heart. It is an addictive combination.
Stuck over each rice cake were sesame flakes and furikake powder bringing in nuts and seaweed fragrant.

=

By then, I saw the true magic of this place. I did not feel like eating in Hong Kong. It could be New York, it could be London.. It was the whole combo - the drinks, the food, the people, the attitude - the overall buzz and vibes.

The buzz and vibes did the magic!

So does Yardbird really live up to the hype? Actually it depends what you are looking for - Food, Drink or Vibe. Food wise, there were several dishes that impressed me. Drink wise, they have an extended drinks list and I love their whisky collection. If you are coming in a party of two, Yardbird is not in romantic settings and might be too noisy for you. While if you come in a big group who also happens love to drink, you will have a great night here.

Yardbird is very much like restaurants in New York, where there is a bar at the entrance, and the dining room is located much inner. Ambiance is lively with loud music. Furnishing as well as the table settings are quite simple. There is an open kitchen at the dining area, probably for yakitori. Waiters are friendly and helpful.

As you might have known, all the yakitori dishes Yardbird offers are chicken related, even if it is named oyster. There are pork dishes available on the side menu, you just have to ask or look around.

The Cucumber Salad
Not as refreshing as I thought it would be, the cucumber was seasoned with sesame and miso sauce which was quite sweet for an appetiser. The pine nuts was paired nice with the miso sauce.

Meatball
The meatball came with a dipping sauce of tare sauce and egg yolk which requires mixing before serving. The meatball tasted ok but the texture was quite soft and fluffy which I dislike. Furthermore the tare sauce was made too salty. The chicken patty as well as the tare sauce was much better in Wai Wai, Causeway Bay.

Heart
I have had chicken hearts somewhere before and found it tasted nicer than it sounds. (I know it sounds horrible and FYI the shape looks like a heart too lol) The chicken heart was served with green onions and ginger. It tasted pretty much the same as any chicken thigh but with a stronger chewiness.

We found this funny so we ordered it. The oyster was a part at the chicken hip as explained by our waiter. It was marinated with sea salt and lemon. The oyster was juicy and tender. It was also quite fatty which the oil from fats made it extra yum!

KFC - Korean fried Cauliflower + Chicken
Freaking foodgasm dish! It tasted very similar to Bon chon chicken which has crispy skin, juicy meats and a lovely special chilli sauce.
My friend told me you can order chicken with the KFC, so we made the request. As said, the chicken tasted very much like Bon Chon Chicken, which is my favourite fried chicken on earth, but Yardbird's fried chicken has more crispy skin!!! The delishness drove me nuts.

While the original cauliflower was another killer! The bon chon magic works even better on the cauliflower!!! The outside was extremely crispy, which the inner was crunchy and mushy at the same time. It tasted like a mashed potato at the first bite but later you feel the crunch of the cauliflower! What a magical KFC!

Peanut Butter Ice-cream
The Peanut Butter Ice-cream was the only dessert available in the house. My friend had made amazing peanut butter ice-cream before, so I held huge expectation. This Penut Butter ice-cream was very weird to taste, it has a strong peanut butter taste but did not taste like the peanut butter that we are familiar with e.g. Skippy's. The texture was creamy enough, but I just don't like how it is tasted.

The food at Yardbird was generally not particularly impressive except the KFC and the sweet corn tempura. The KFC Chicken can totally win me over, I finally found a place to satisfy my crave of Bon Chon Chicken in Hong Kong! There are still lots of food that I have not tried on the menu that I feel interested in. Plus the fact that I really love their whisky collection, I can see myself coming back to Yardbird in the nearer future.
