Fresh & tasty sashimi.

Shizuoka:

This shop is one of the restaurants under the "Nasubi" group. The group was founded in Shizuoka, Japan, more than 40 years ago. They have branches in Shanghai and Hangzhou as well. We've tried one of their restaurants in Shizuoka (Muan) various times so we were looking forward to trying this out.

Decor:

The moment you walk into the restaurant you'll see a sashimi counter with about 12 seats. It must have at least 20 tables for four persons and one or more VIP rooms. The tables were placed fairly wide apart from each other.

Menu:

The menu was in Japanese, Chinese and English. It was fairly comprehensive and included sashimi, sushi, soba, ochatsuke, tempura, various fried and grilled stuff.

However, to our slight disappointment, they did not appear to have signature Shizuoka items such as fish cakes, wasabi and sakura ebi. Their fishes seems to be from Nagasaki instead of from Shizuoka.

They had really pricey items such as HK$150 for one piece of Ootoro sushi and HK$688 for 8 slices of maguro.

On the other hand, we were surprised to see that the dinner sets were very reasonable.

Lunch sets:

We ordered the signature "Nasubi Bento" and a "Maguro don" set.

First came the appetizers. Judging from the quality of the appetizers, we could sense a hint of kaiseki ryori. From top to bottom, it's a delicious mixture of marinated shiitake and other mushrooms, a very flavourful piece of tofu/egg mixture and finally some green peas and something which seemed like vermicelli in dashi (fish stock).

Unfortunately, the tea was very blad - definitely not from Shizuoka. My wife was not too happy about it. Luckily, the rest of the meal was good.

Maguro Don:

The set consisted of chawanmushi (steamed egg) and a bowl of miso soup.

The maguro looked great and tasted just as great. It's not easy to find good quality maguro in Hong Kong. The negitoro below the maguro was above average too. Egg slices inside the rice were finely cut into tiny pieces. This was a display of skill and sincerity.

The quality of the Japanese rice was also good. My wife was very happy with her don.

Good for the indecisive customer - this bento box had a large selection of different items. Most of those were available a la carte.

Clockwise starting at 12 o'clock: Smoked duck breasts, 3 types of mochi, egg roll, steamed pumpkin, marinated sardine, chicken marinated in tomato sauce, assorted sashimi (hamachi, akami and chutoro), fried minced fish/squid ball(?), miso sauce with clam and finally, chopped bean curd.

I was happy with all the above. The sashimi in particular was good.

Clockwise (from top right): A piece of fish wrapped in a sesame parcel, fried sardine, pork(?) embedded inside a small piece of onion and a small piece of mochi placed together with what seems to be fish cake.

Again, all these were elegantly presented. The fried sardine was very interesting.

Gomoku rice with gobou. This was different from typical gomoku rice. It had seaweed, mung beans, carrots, mushrooms and some beancurd. The taste of the rice was on the light side and was quite refreshing. Some may find the taste of the rice too light though.

This was included in our sets. It seemed like panna cotta with macha on top of it. We liked this very much.

Conclusion:

Service was good and the price of the sets were very reasonable. The quality of the sashimi was good and made an impression.

I won't rule out another visit to try out their dinner sets or their sashimi/sushi.

Worth a try.
