I am happy to stay in Hong Kong for a longer period of time. Besides visiting my friends and relatives, I decided to savour all delicacies there to compare the differences of Hong Kong and Singapore food.After my unhappy incident over at a so-called Singapore restaurant in World Trade Centre, I had to evaluate all the self-proclaimed authentic food carefully. After my unhappy incident over at a so-called Singapore restaurant in World Trade Centre, I had to evaluate all the self-proclaimed authentic food carefully. It is not easy as almost all stalls selling Singapore food claims that they employed Singaporean chef who knows every bit of the concoction to dish out Singapore delicacies. I had the same doubt when I saw Asian Family on one of the local magazines.
I went to the shop on the first day of Chinese New Year and a queue was already forming up. I understand from my friend that Hong Kong people seldom dine out on the first day of Chinese New Year. There must be something about this restaurant that I need to find out.
When I enter the restaurant (after close to 15 - 20 minutes of queueing), I was greeted by the friendly staff. The ways to the heart of a customer are good service and good food. The actions of the staff were prompt and their attitude was fantastic. That drowns my not-so-good impression of some Hong Kong restaurants that I have visited previously. The staff - I believe is the managress - was very enthusiastic in her recommendation. I made up my mind on their famous Hainan Chicken Rice, Bak Kut Teh and Laksa.
The dish came in less than 10 minutes time.
1. The Chicken Rice tasted so good that I felt like the 25 minutes of waiting time was all worthwhile. The fragrance of the rice made one wanted to taste the rice immediately. The rice was well-cooked - where the flavour will still linger on your taste bud and your throat after you swallow it. The once-thought comment that the rice could be savour on its own without any dishes was taken as an exageration before. It is only after tasting it that I realised that this is true.
2. The Chicken was well marinated and prepared. The skin was so smooth that it can slide down your throat.
3. Laksa was next. The gravy prepared was comparable to our local at Tanjong Katong Road. Well Done!!
I decided to test out the system of the restaurant and requested to meet the Head Chef. I thought that he would be too busy to come out from his kitchen. Upon mentioning my request, the staff went into the kitchen and came out with the Head Chef within a short time. The Head Chef was very polite and wanted my comments for his dishes.
A good restaurant need not be positioned in a shopping centre and with many gimmicks posted. Asian Family has a combination of good service and good food. Although the decoration and layout of the place looks normal, but the food and service well made up for it. Well done!
