This restaurant is a joke and certainly does not deserve to be in the 50 best restaurant in Asia - although their promotion and their instagram are quite well done. In contrast, the food was average and ultra overprice. There was in fact only 1 main course as the others like their famous salt baked chicken is only available with pre-order, which we didn’t know. This restaurant is a joke and certainly does not deserve to be in the 50 best restaurant in Asia - although their promotion and their instagram are quite well done.

In contrast, the food was average and ultra overprice.
There was in fact only 1 main course as the others like their famous salt baked chicken is only available with pre-order, which we didn’t know.
So the main course of the day: a fish well presented with rice “paella style”, just enough for 2 persons and charged 1250 HKD !!!
The rest of the menu is basically tapas, relatively tasty, but for sure not a culinary experience : one was saucisson and another one Parma ham….
i could also mention a short and uninspired wine list.
But the worst is that we were proposed a table at the “bar”, as the restaurant was originally fully booked.
The “bar” has actually a panoramic view on a… wet kitchen where staff noisily rince the cutlery and empty the plates in a garbage bin.
At some point the manager/chef had to intervene to tell the staff to be less noisy and have more respect for people - us - having dinner 50 cm from them.
In summary a tasteless, pricey experience with poor service. Really disappointing.

I've heard many good things about this restaurant and it is indeed quite difficult to book. I tend to dislike restaurants that serves 2 rounds of tables, I never feel respected as a customer in arrangements like that but nevertheless I have no choice in this occasion today. As it was a friend's birthday so her husband had the honor to order the food. We started off with a potato salad with a half cooked egg on top. Quite nice.

Some cold cuts. Cold cuts are pretty similar everywhere unless if they source really premium stuff and charge you a crazy price, so nothing much to say about the cold cuts.

Into this below. As fancy as it looks, I think they probably need to introduce a bit more flavors to the chicken. You can only taste cream and nothing else and the cream was so rich that it even covered the original taste of the chicken. I believe that was not intended.

Can I say that I'm very satisfied with the meal? Probably not. Was it worth the wait and booking in advance? I didn't think so. In conclusion:
1) Seems like they are trying to do a bit of everything, Italian, Spanish, French however none of the food was super impressive
2) Considering the style of cooking and ingredients I guess this restaurant is probably overpriced
3) Personally am not a big fan of eating either at 6 or 8:30
4) Food is not bad in any sense but I guess just not worth all the hassle of booking and a late dinner. 

Not too sure if I'll come again, I certainly wouldn't initiate.

The pigeon eggs and the padron pepper with melted raclette cheese are must try!!! Pigeon eggs are so squishy and smooth, incredibly match with the savoury charizo crumbles! Can’t think you can find it elsewhere easily. The little green Patron peppers are super fresh, the taste of freshness goes so well with the cheese, it’s simple yet divine!

The 2 handmade pastas - garganelli with braised duck and squid ink tagliolini with firefly squid are outstanding too! So satisfying except that the portion size is relatively small.

Neighborhood has been on my bucket list after it has been ranked as one of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Fortunately, we are able to make the reservation same day and turns out everything does live up to our expectations.Frog legs meunière is one of their signature starters. When it arrives, we are so surprised by the size of the frog legs. And what’s more surprising is how they are perfectly fried with a delicate crust while keeping the legs juicy.We are also deadly in love with Aubrac beef

Frog legs meunière is one of their signature starters. When it arrives, we are so surprised by the size of the frog legs. And what’s more surprising is how they are perfectly fried with a delicate crust while keeping the legs juicy.

We are also deadly in love with Aubrac beef hanger steak which are literally the best steak I have in awhile. Got it medium and it was cooked to perfection - soft and tender, no blood on the plate and exceptionally seasoned.

Definitely coming again to try out other options!

這餐晚飯可以用無與輪比來到形容!每個菜式不論味道和賣相都十分只人滿意。餐廳的小菜都鼓勵已分享形式來享用,所以我决定點了四個小菜式。頭盤新鮮生蠔配泰式辣汁,生蠔內沒有碎殼,而且還完美地保存了海水,證明開蠔的師傅的實力。法式田雞腳把田雞酥炸後放進香牛油內,令到炸田雞多帶一點堅果香。牛骨髓野生蘑菇意大利飯更採用了 陳年意大利飯作材料,令到飯粒的質地更加飽滿,增加飯香,如果多一點調味就更加好。牛腹肉更是整個晚上的焦點!從來沒有品嘗過這麼重牛肉味和肉質鮮嫩的牛扒!別忘了和旁邊的慢煮蒜頭一併品嚐,你會體驗到最意想不到的甜蒜香。如此佳餚怎能不配上美酒一支?Viognier 白酒的花香正好中和各菜式的油膩感,更提升了生蠔的味道。朱古力甜品雖然不會過甜但可可味道有點重,法式可麗露味道十分有趣,好像竹蔗水似的。 這一切一切都令人回味,不愧名列在亞洲50大餐廳中。有時美好的東西往往不會在大街中找到,但只要你細心留意,幸福很可能就在這麽一個角落中,默默的守侯着你。

田雞腿和pigeon egg surprised us! 我們encore 再 encore Kinki魚很滑 但跟飯底不是非常夾 最後出場鹽焗雞飯 真是非一般的好吃 皮薄多汁嫩滑的元朗田原雞加上雞什煮的creamy rice 真的超級好吃啊

第二次來了,之前每個吃過的朋友都向我推薦,加上自帶aisa‘s 50 best restaurants 2018的光環,第一次嘗試後覺得非常喜歡。Fukuoka mochida tomato/white anchovies 番茄沙拉配鳳尾魚,個人覺得鳳尾魚有點畫蛇添足了,不放也許更好。Todays’s special: mushroom and egg. 這道還可以。Frog legs meuniere: 第一次就點了這個,很香很好吃,但是非常的油……Homemade garganelli with spanner crab and sea urchin: 也是之前點過的菜,這道非常好吃,配料很足,也很入味,推薦。Aubrac beef hanger steak with pomme puree: 配菜的土豆泥特別好吃,牛排無功無過。值得一說的是最後附送的甜點味道不錯,可惜是冷的。第二次來沒有上次那麼驚艷了,可能跟點的菜有關,不過餐廳整體氣氛特別棒,下次還是會再來的。

值得一說的是最後附送的甜點味道不錯,可惜是冷的。

第二次來沒有上次那麼驚艷了,可能跟點的菜有關,不過餐廳整體氣氛特別棒,下次還是會再來的。

經朋友帶路所以去左試呢間餐廳。門口位於小巷入面。因為早到左少少,所以book左檯都要稍等一陣。餐廳氣氛不俗,淡黃既燈光,好warm好舒服。而且Staff都十分之有禮貌。餐牌大概以alcohol為主。食物亦會因食材而轉餐牌arugula尚算新鮮,配上芝士可以中和沙律菜既bitterness,口感一流。麵包較硬身。牛肉味較淡,個人認為紅白酒均可配搭。一送到檯面已經聞到香味濃郁,飯既份量夠薄身,加埋啲汁,夠曬入味!唔咸!魚皮香脆魚肉有層次感。雲呢拿味濃!底層有nuts。如自帶酒水可以提早拎去餐廳,餐廳會幫你開定透氣。餐廳面積雖小,但食物有質素。

Ahh, those Hong Kong laneways can be quite hidden 🙂

By the time Alex had arrived, we’d already started munching on the warm crusty bread (unfortunately the butter wasn’t quite room temperature) and finished a serve of the saucisson ‘noir de bigorre’.  The fatty sausage was made from the Gascon, a rare breed of domestic pig usually found in remote regions of France.  It was delicious and really set my expectations at super high levels for the remainder of the meal…

Once we were all together, our hostess for the night came over and highlighted the ‘must have’s’ from the menu, which was a simple list of dish descriptions.  The menu did separate the pre-order specials, which you need to order 24 hours before your reservation.  We went a little crazy and ordered quite a few delicious sounding plates of food!

The Jumbo Dutch Oysters were first to arrive, and as promised, they were massive!  We’d only ordered one each, but they were sufficient in size to largely satisfy.  The oysters themselves were plump with a low salinity, and on their own quite nice.  However, there was a ‘mild’ spicy sauce that accompanied that was anything but mild!  Luckily I’d gone last after taking some photos, so I could scrape most of the sauce off, however, it was still so punchy that it slaughtered the taste of the oyster.

Looking incredibly rustic and colourful, the Hokkaido scallops in local zucchini blossom with truffle was presented.  The scallop pieces carefully wrapped in the zucchini flower and presented with olives, tomato and sliced zucchini stalks.  The combo of the sweetness from the scallop and the saltiness and astringency of the tomato were nice, but not exactly blow away – highlighted by the fact that we didn’t really clean off the plate.

I was, however, completely surprised by how much I loved the roast pigeon eggs in curry, given I’m not a fan of curry.  But the little balls of sweetness were a superb match for the mild curry, especially the creaminess from the yolk.  Texturally, they were a little firm at first, but when crushed in the mouth, were exquisitely squishy.  I was completely baffled at how much I loved this combo, so much so, I went back for seconds, as did everyone else.  By the time we’d finished, there was just an empty bowl.

With more than a strong influence from France, the frogs’ legs meuniere were really interesting, super tasty and incredibly difficult to eat!  The effort was worth it though, with a slightly fishy flavour and texture like chicken, each small piece of the frogs’ leg was like winning the taste lottery.  Even accounting for the odd small bone almost swallowed, it was a really nice dish that we all enjoyed.

I was hoping for more when we’d ordered beignet of asparagus from Provenance with wild garlic aioli but was just a little disappointed with the big lumps of deep fried asparagus arrived.  Flavour wise, there was that slightly sweet and very astringent taste of asparagus, but the cooking process had muted the flavour somewhat.  Adding the garlic aioli was a must, as they were quite dry without, but thankfully, the aioli added to the flavour nicely.

None of us loved the fried firefly squid, and I personally was a little put off by the little pieces of whole baby squid.  I’m normally a huge fan of baby squid, but there was a texture coming from the head that was terrible, almost gritty and dirty that jarred on my palate.  I left it at one, and while the rest of the group went for a second, just to be sure, we largely left this plate uneaten.

Redemption came next in the form of wild boar garganelli, the lightly prepared pasta was simply amazing; perfectly al dente with a sauce made from wild boar that was to die for.  The sweetness was all-pervasive (in a good way) and in complete contrast to the squid, we had duelling forks to see who would get the last of the remnants in the bowl.  Simply put, it was the highlight of the evening.

Only just though, as redemption continued with the aquarello risotto with morel mushrooms and bone marrow.  I love, love, love morels and this risotto was stocked full of the delicacy.  Helping things along was expertly cooked risotto, each individual rice granule apparent to the naked eye, as well as that sweet, sweet bone marrow.  I definitely would have loved more of that risotto 🙂

After such wonderful dishes, it was back to a plate of food that for us, was literally inedible.  Let me explain.  We didn’t really know what to expect when we ordered the jumbo artichoke with foie gras (well, we knew what to expect with the foie gras!).  However, the last thing we expected to see was a huge half of an artichoke sitting on a plate with instructions to peel the leaves off and dip into the foie gras.  Now, the leaves of an artichoke are usually peeled away for a reason; the artichoke heart is the piece you want to eat, with the leaves discarded and thrown away.

Yeah, for good reason, it was like chewing cardboard and only one of us could actually stomach swallowing one of the leaves, and that was after a good 5 minutes of chewing.  I really don’t know what the thinking was behind this, but it was not good.  We did finish the foie gras (which was smooth and delicious) but left the artichoke alone.

We simply didn’t understand the chef’s vision on this one…

Our last dish was from the pre-order menu, which Alex had confirmed during the confirmation call; largely based on the inclusion of morel mushrooms 🙂 – The roasted morel chicken with giblet rice was a really interesting dish, which largely reminded me of a paella.  Served in a big cast iron pot, the rise had crusted along the bottom beautifully, providing a caramelised flavour to the dish.  I also loved the morels that were plentiful but struggled a little with the star of the dish, the chicken.  I found the large pieces to be really tough to eat, and a little stringy.  Sure, the flavour was nice, but the texture was a little distracting.

We finished off our meal with the French toast with ice cream and truffle, which was sadly disappointed also.  The toast was not light and fluffy, but a little on the dense side and while golden in colour, it was not golden in flavour.  The truffle was lost in the dish, and while the ice-cream was decent, it should have been the supporting act, and not the star of the dish.

The girl fared a little better with her incredibly generous serving of Brie de Meaux ‘alloesse’ with black truffle.  I mean, it was a tasty piece of cheese with infused truffle, but the serving size was more appropriate for the whole table, so there was way too much for one girl to eat.

Wow, what a confused and confusing meal we’d had.  Head chef and owner David Lai is known for changing his menu daily, thriving on seasonality and unusual flavours, but on our visit, this felt like more of a weakness than strength.  There were elements on the menu that we absolutely adored, and others that were just not great (or good).

While the service on the night was excellent, and the space very cool, I couldn’t help thinking that the regular change of menu might impact the ability to get a great set of dishes that could mature.

To be honest, we were all left wondering if we were missing the point about the restaurant.  I know that it’s a favourite of some of Hong Kong’s top chefs to hang out, but I personally just didn’t get it.  Noted as the 32nd best restaurant in Asia, I would struggle to put Neighbourhood in my top 50 restaurants in Hong Kong.

This place is heavenly! The beef and oyster tartare was simply divine. This french version of tartare showed a perfect combination of savoury and sour, with a hint of sweetness from the oyster.  It was topped with some crunchy fried garlic which does not overpower the taste, but level up the whole tartare. The sea urchin pasta was so creamy and eggy. The sea urchin pasta was so creamy and eggy. Love the sweetness and the taste of "ocean" brought by the Canadian sea urchin! The sauce and the sea urchin puree was amazing !! I was so determined to visit Neighborhood after seeing a photo featuring this sea urchin pasta on Instagram. The presentation was slightly different from the old one. I guessed it's because some customers reflected that the tagliolini tasted a bit bland before?

It's my first time trying a beef tripe gratin! The Tabasco spices up the dish! It was wonderful, especially dipping the intensely flavoured sauce with bread. My mom wasn't loving this dish as I was, as she thought it was too sour for her liking.

I had a high expectation to their so-called "transcendent" dessert- the chocolate palette. It was made with 70% french chocolate. Yet, it was just so-so. Not memorable at all! I should try their french toast with black truffle instead of this.

Ok, so the title of this review may seem a little overdone but I firmly believe that when you weigh up everything that makes a restaurant good this little beauty comes out on top. Ok, so the title of this review may seem a little overdone but I firmly believe that when you weigh up everything that makes a restaurant good this little beauty comes out on top.

First the food is simply superb. I’d call the menu French farmhouse - delicious, unfussy, French food. They offer mostly sharing plates and a good mix of meats and fish. Oh, and if it’s in season Chef David Lai (Lot 10 fame) has it, so think fresh truffles (sold by the gram) and the many types of seasonal mushrooms through the year.

David’s ability to blend flavours and textures is second to none. He and his team cook things to perfection (fish never overcooked, vegetables always left with a bit of a crunch, pasta home made, and so on). The menu is always changing, with some very clever dishes. There is always something new and interesting on there (curried mussels) as well as some stalwarts like their padron peppers and or mixed vegetables.

The wine list is short but sharp. Excellent wines at a very good price point ($450-$1100).

The service is friendly and the venue, while being down a dirty backstreet (but hey, this is Hong Kong), is cosy and comfortable (read lowly lit).

And then there is the price. David’s ability to turn out amazing food at these low prices is hard to believe. I can’t overstate this enough. Dinner for two consisting of 4/5 sharing plates can come to less than $1000! And yet the food matches if not beats many of Hong King’s more storied hotel restaurants.

This place had to be tried to be believed. Top marks.

Aquitaine beef and oyster tartare ($225) - We thought we couldn't possibly go wrong by starting with their Aquitaine beef tartare. I love the refreshing and clean flavors from the raw beef meshing well with the small bits of raw oysters. Very nice to go with the bread.

Pigeon eggs with escargot butter ($150) - The pigeon eggs were really soft and pillowy, and I distinctly remembered one of the egg yolk being soft and yummy like a soft-boiled egg. Initially, I was a bit worried about the pigeon eggs working together with garlic and herb butter but they proved my worries wrong right after my very first bite.

And how thoughtful was that to serve them with a vintage escargot pot?

Beef tripe gratin ($165) - I still recalled one of the best beef tripe gratin I ever had at Linguini Fini many years ago. They don't make this dish anymore so I was left stranded for years trying to find a place with the perfect beef tripe gratin. Now it looks like I have finally found it!

This was just very very good (and addictive). The shredded cheese and herbs were spot on and only if they could hold back a bit on the chili powder, it would have been perfect.

Chocolate palette ($85) - Surprisingly after just 4 dishes, both of us were already throwing in the white towel so at this point, we went straight for dessert. Between the chocolate palette and French toast with ice-cream, it was a pretty easy choice for us since we both like chocolate.

This was very tasty. Love the rich and velvety chocolate ganache and the hint of raspberry provided a nice kick of acidity.

It's been almost 3 years since I last enjoyed Neighborhood's comforting French-Italian fare. Like my previous visit, I found this meal to be quite enjoyable and satisfying. Perhaps I should seriously consider coming more often.
