The atmosphere and lighting made me feel like I was in nature, peaceful and quiet. The sashimi and sushi collection were amazing, especially the salmon and foie gras nigiri both raw and cooked sushi all melted the moment I put it into my mouth. The foie gras sushi was seared perfectly; the seaweed wrap was still crispy and not soggy at all. The Avocado and cream cheese roll was quite unique, I loved the fact that they scraped actual parmesan cheese as garnish because it gave the extra kick of tangy flavor to the dish. We also ordered two apple martini/ sake drink, they were a bit strong with the alcoholic but was still acceptable for us.
We then ordered two vegetable dishes, one hot and one cold. For the cold dish we ordered an avocado egg salad, the ingredients were freshly chosen and the avocadoes were well done as you could see in the picture, so colorful in green and yellow. The hot dish was fried egg with bitter melon, the good thing about this dish was that it wasn’t bitter at all and that it was quite mushy so we didn’t have to chew too much.
Since my friend is a vegetarian, he ordered a vegetarian katsudon. It was so tasty we couldn’t even figure out the difference between real katsudon and vegetarian katsudon, even I liked it very much. It is a must try dish.
Another main course we ordered was a Japanese clear soup vegetable hotpot, this dish on the other hand tasted less flavorful. I personally would like something with more flavors, such as pork bone soup or fish broth hotpot.
For desserts, we ordered a green tea soufflé that came with a creamy custard sauce and a piece of butter cookie. It was my first time eating green tea flavored soufflé and it did not disappoint me, yummmmms~ (preparation time: 20 minutes)
My parents decided to try this place for lunch. I called at around 11:10am to make a reservation for three. I was greeted by a man, who was very friendly. I told him I would like to make a reservation. He told me to wait, and about 30 seconds later he noted my reservation down. We arrived promptly at 12:00pm and were seated immediately by the very friendly greeter.
Immediately upon entering the restaurant, you know that this is not an ordinary chain japanese dining facility. The decor is certainly unique. The room is filled with various potted plants and the ceiling columns are adorned with elaborate vinage. The tables are simple and are spaced well throughout the restaurant The chairs are very comfortable, however I believe that the pillow that is placed on the sofa part of the table is much too soft to give any decent back support. The sofa itself though is very comfy.
For a set menu there is really a lot of variety to choose from. You could pick from simple sashimi and sushi dishes, to rice pots, and noodles all ranging from the price of HK$150 - $370. We placed our orders and proceeded to peruse what the mini-buffet had to offer.
I always enjoy sampling everything that a buffet has to offer. Starting on the top left hand corner, this was a simple egg and potato salad. I like how it looks like a scoop of ice cream, that is very creative. At first, I found the potato to be too rich. However, by the second bite, I found the overall flavour to be very satisfying. It was creamy, yet the acidity of the tomato (which I had on the second bite) helped to balance the dish very well. My dad really enjoyed this dish.
On the bottom left hand corner, we have a simple cabbage salad with thousand island and peanut dressing. Nothing special to report, and the only problem I had with it was that there was too much sauce which overwhelmed the salad.
On the top right hand corner, we have a simple shredded seaweed, cabbage and bean sprout salad. I really enjoyed this. It was a cold dish and combined both Japanese and Korean flavours. The dressing was sour, but very mild and there was sesame in it. However, what really gave it an extra dosage of goodness was the Korean kimchi flavour. Also, the portion looks very tiny, but the salad is packed together very tightly, so there is actually a lot more than there appears to be.
Finally, on the bottom right hand corner is the best appetizer of all; the soup. This soup is full of flavours and ingredients. There are mushrooms, tofu, cabbage, salmon, onions, and all of this simmers in a very light miso base. I also like how they place the soup in a clay pot and keep it simmering at the buffet, this ensures that it is nice and hot for everyone to enjoy. At first I thought the soup would be over seasoned, but it was just right. The mushrooms were very soft and also the salmon was cooked perfectly. My whole family would agree that this was the best part of the meal. The table was not set with any spoons, and we had to ask for soup spoons to enjoy this dish, however, these were quickly brought to us.
For the price I paid, I was very disappointed by the amount I was given. The salmon was very fresh, but I thought it was sliced too thickly. The shrimp and remaining sashimi were average. The wasabi was excellent though, it dissolved seamlessly into the soya sauce.
This was piping hot when it was served. Once again, I was amazed by everything that was packed into this little pot. There was the wagyu beef (quite a large portion), the poached egg, onions, mushrooms, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots. It all looked very lovely in this pot. There was also a very large portion of rice, however, the rice was very soggy and I would have scored this dish with five smileys had it been more dry. I really appreciate, how the restaurant did not skimp on the amount of beef, unlike the sashimi. Every mouthful had plenty of beef to go with the rice. The mushrooms were also cooked with a teriyaki sauce, which made them full of flavour. I also give special props to the onions which were caramelised perfectly, and by this I meant that they were very soft and soggy, but when you bit into them, there was still a crunch. This is not easy to do.
This was over seasoned. I could not drink the soup at all. I only managed to eat the little pieces of steamed and fried tofu, which were cooked very well.
The coffee was really good. It had a very strong roasted flavour to it, which is my favourite kind. The cheesecake, although very small, was just right in terms of its richness and creaminess. I always judge a cheesecake by its crust, which is my favourite part and thought that it lacked any real crunch. I appreciated that we had the option to have brown or white sugar with our coffee. One small comment was that the fork that was provided to eat our cheese cake had two prongs, and was the size of a tooth pick, which made it quite difficult to eat the cake in anything more than a dainty little bite.
Overall, I would say this place has great value, great service, and a great environment. I would just come back to have that soup again. There are also many other options on the lunch the set that looked good, and I heard that they change the components of the buffet every week so I will definitely go back and try something new. The place was not very packed for prime lunch time.
It seemed to me that the sushi bar is closed on Sundays during lunch as they place the buffet along the bar. I saw many guests come in and leave after asking if they could sit at the sushi bar.

Quietly tucked away in the sumptuous surroundings of Lee Gardens Two, Harakan-S is a haven which is conveniently located in the heart of bustling Causeway Bay. Harakan-S is a Japanese fine dining restaurant which was re-launched in September 2011 after its extensive refurbishment.
Even though the Japanese cuisine at Harakan-S is sophisticated and refined, the interior setting is elegantly relaxed. The restaurant has an airy cream-and-beige tone, and is lavish yet unpretentious. With the abundant number of Japanese restaurants in Hong Kong, what truly sets Harakan-S apart from the others is its healthy and inspiring vegetarian menu, which is a scrumptious alternative to the usual Chinese vegetarian dishes and plain salads. To make things even better, Harakan-S currently has a promotion called “Veggie Wednesdays”, and all the dishes on its vegetarian menu will be at 50% off on Wednesdays!
(1) We started off our meal with this exquisite vegetarian Okinawa Barufu Salad ($100). The most special thing about the salad is the seaweed, which has waterdrop-like features on them! All of us tried touching the leaf and expected the droplets to fall off, but surprisingly, they had a jelly-like consistency and delightfully popped in our mouth as we ate them!
(2) We then had a second salad, the Oyster Leave Tofu Salad ($100). The Oyster Leaves are freshly imported from the Netherlands and are known to have an oyster taste to them, as oyster shells are used as their fertiliser, which embeds the flavours of the oysters into the leaves. The Oyster Leaves had a crisp texture and a salty, sea-water taste. For those of you who like oysters’ fresh taste but not its slimy texture, here’s your solution!
(3) Next, we had this plate of inviting, incredibly indulgent Assorted Sashimi, consisting of Chu-Toro, Botan Shrimp, Scallop, Prime Yellowtail, Salmon, and Thin Slices of Seasonal Fish. The fish was startlingly fresh, and what I particularly adored was the citrus home-made yuzu sauce, which had a gel-like consistency and truly intensified the sashimi’s summery flavours. I ate a bit of the shredded yellow cucumber at the top left corner in the photo below, which was dry and had an interesting woody texture!
(4) After we had finished the sashimi, the chef kindly deep fried the salmon and the shrimp heads for us. These beautifully deep fried dishes were decadently crispy and gratifying, and it was a fantastic idea as we didn’t have to waste any part of the sashimi set at all.
(5) Next, we had 4 pieces of Creative Sushi. You may be puzzled by the word “creative” right now…The answer to your question is that the sushi had creative sauces on them, all carefully prepared by the chef! The sushi on the left was served with a thick red miso sauce which had a mellow but distinctive flavour; the sushi in the middle was topped with a classic Japanese sesame sauce, and the sushi on the right was matched with a playful, slightly salty seaweed sauce, and together, these sauces brought a contemporary flair to classic types of sushi.
(6) The makis and rolls were one of my favourite dishes of this magnificent meal. Starting with the vegetarian maki, the Black Truffle Vegetable Maki (V) had tofu fillings and was wrapped in rice, and sprinkled with black truffle shavings. It was subtle and simply delightful. On the left was the Okinawa Bitter Gourd Tempura Maki (V). The gourd was crispy and not bitter at all, and the maki was served with an Okinawa Black Sugar sauce which was made by slowly simmering the Okinawa Black Sugar under low heat. I totally loved the vegetarian makis and am sure that they would equally excite my vegetarian friends!
(7) Moving on to the non-vegetarian sushi, we then had a Wagyu & Sweet Shrimp Roll (right). The roll was wrapped with wagyu beef on the outside which was alluringly fatty, while the sweet shrimp in the middle was soft and tender. The compatibility of these two textures and tastes was heavenly. The classic California roll (left) was freshly prepared, and I could never seem to turn down a California roll no matter how full I was!
(8) With a full and satisfied stomach, we took a break from solid food with a Vegetarian Seafood Maitake Tea Pot Soup (V) ($80). Maitake is a type of Japanese mushroom (舞茸), and it has a strong, unique flavour. The clear soup was beautifully served in a little tea cup, and was warm and soothing. Our taste buds really needed this break as they had been working so hard from all the intense flavours during the meal!
(9) Next on our menu was a delicate and extravagant Salt Grilled Wagyu A5 steak. The Wagyu A5 steak was absolutely splendid, and the fat simply melted in the mouth. Fortunately, our previous vegetarian dishes left us a lot of meat quota for this Wagyu A5 steak!
(10) Nearing the end of our meal, we delved into the Vegetarian shrimp and scallop fried rice (V). The rice was appealingly buttery and glutinous, and the veggie seafood had a tantalising peppery taste. The texture of the veggie shrimps and scallops was softer and less firm than the actual seafood, but apart from that, I almost couldn’t tell the difference.
(11) Presented before us were Harakan-S’s signature desserts, Lychee Panna Cotta and Yuzu Crème Brûlée. The Panna Cotta had a tropical, fruity lychee scent, and was more jelly-like and less creamy than an Italian panna cotta. The crème brûlée was a little bowl of creamy goodness, and the Yuzu flavour was marvellously refreshing.
Molten red bean cake with green tea ice cream,紅豆心太軟配綠茶雪糕。
