I had heard a lot of hype about Korean Fried Chicken and this particular restaurant. I found it hard to believe, as fads are normally just that - fads. I am so happy to say that I was wrong. The KFC at Lee Family Chicken is one of the most amazing things I have put in my mouth for a while.
We came here after a lot of prompting from some Korean friends who said that the KFC here was better than in Korea. Pretty heavy accolade.
Well, it was Friday at about ten past six when we arrived to a very short queue. About eight people in front of us outside the front door. About 20 minutes later, we were four places further forward with at least 50 people behind us in the line. 20 minutes later and we were in.
The smell had been taunting us the entire time we were waiting and we immidiately ordered one chicken, half and half. The staff put out water for us and some pickled daikon and cabbage in thousand island-style dressing. Both dishes were great. The daikon had a good sweet/sour pickle and the cabbage was addictive.
After about 10/15 minutes, the chicken arrived. The steaming plate of crispy chicken parts was so inviting, I almost burnt my mouth in eargerness. First we tried the classic fried chicken. The coating was so crisp and not oily in any way. The black pepper in it gave it a kick of spice that was very welcome. The chicken was succulent and juicy. It was cooked perfectly and there was a good amount of flesh on the bird - not a scrawny creature.
The other half of the chicken was coated in the sweet and spicy sauce. OMG - amazing. If the classic wasn't already perfection, the sauce just ratcheted it up a gear. Thick and sticky, the sauce packed a punch in both flavour and pleasure. While not super spicy, it definitely had a bite and the rich texture perfectly coated the chicken and our fingers. The batter on the chicken remained crispy, allowing for different layers of mouth feel.
Basically, this is the best $160 + 10% you will spend in a HK restaurant. It is also the most worthy que I have stood in for a long while. Don't delay - get down to Lee Family Chicken ASAP.
