Vegetarian friend in town meant researching edible options for him. Stumbled upon this gem in the heart of Kowloon City. The main dining area is cute and homey with small tables and lots of photos of their food taped to the walls. We sat outside (only doable really between August and February... I cannot imagine drinking tom yum soup in the thick of summer) and I personally appreciated the lack of pretense the entire place had. The main dining area is cute and homey with small tables and lots of photos of their food taped to the walls. We sat outside (only doable really between August and February... I cannot imagine drinking tom yum soup in the thick of summer) and I personally appreciated the lack of pretense the entire place had. Considering how quickly Kowloon City is gentrifying, this place is a rare find.
For three people, we ordered:
Tom yum soup
Pomelo salad
Sweet and sour pork (so cliche but it's a guilty pleasure)
Basil rice
A platter of assorted egg rolls, spring rolls and fried tofu
We asked that the spicy dishes (the soup and salad, primarily) be served less spicy. The soup was incredible. The spice level was perfect; spicy enough to work up just a tiny bit of sweat but also deliciously acidic. The best part is that it's filled with veggies - broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and some bell peppers. A large order was just right for three people to share.
The salad was small but still a decent portion. Again, unlike other shops where I've found the pomelo salad surprisingly and unbearably spicy, this one was spot on. Great ratio of spice, fruit and nuts (cashews).
We were so satisfied with the soup and the salad, we started to wonder how good everything else would be. The platter was equally memorable in that it's a nice selection of small egg rolls, fried turnip cakes and spring rolls, served with a delectable fresh peanut sauce (not that generic brown stuff they smother on dishes at other places) and a red pepper sauce that looked intimidating but only added the slightest kick to each bite.
The sweet and sour pork had a nice crunch (I mean for being tofu) and the sauce was also great - not too thick or generic tasting.
Lastly, the basil rice: this turned out to be the group's favorite of the night. We didn't quite know what it was when we ordered it but it turned out to be a scoop of rice prepared with a light oil and probably basil. It's also served with really satisfying imitation beef. This was divine! Such satisfying Thai flavors - and it still tasted like meat. I've never seen or tried a dish like this at any other Thai restaurant I've been to.
The staff is warm and friendly. They gave us many recommendations (they can speak mandarin, Cantonese, Thai and English) and their welcoming spirit made the experience even more wonderful. The total bill was about $350. Will definitely be going back and bringing others!
