This is the first time for me to write a review and I'm doing this because I want to do some justice for this restaurant.I was taken there for dinner by a Singaporean friend. Rather than trying the traditional steamed chicken, my friend recommended the roasted hainan chicken. The chicken was very juicy and tender, served with the dipping sauces and fragrant chicken rice. I was taken there for dinner by a Singaporean friend. Rather than trying the traditional steamed chicken, my friend recommended the roasted hainan chicken. The chicken was very juicy and tender, served with the dipping sauces and fragrant chicken rice. Even for someone like me who is not too crazy about chicken, I must confess that I finished my share and still wanted more. We then shared a lobster laksa which, for the price, was a steal !!! A whole good size lobster and other seafood served in very rich and slightly spicy soup.
The dinner was so enjoyable that on my way out, I made a reservation to take my parents there - but would have to wait another 3 weeks !

Never expect too much. Never expect too much. Any small restaurants can cook better than this restaurant.

聽聞這間餐廳已久,因為曾在新加坡試過Chatterbox著名的海南雞飯,知道大廚來了香港,定要慕名試試。點了海南雞飯和肉骨茶。肉骨茶味道非常濃郁,杞子帶出特別的甜味。不過我不習慣那藥材味,沒有把湯喝完。附送的油條也算脆。肉骨其實不多,當作晚餐便要加點其他食物了。海南雞飯呢,跟Chatterbox距離甚遠。雞的味道平平無奇,份量亦遠遠不及Chatterbox,加上三種醬汁都完全不是那回事,令人失望。唯一可取的是那碗香飯,吃下去味道也不錯。或者希望越大,失望也越大吧...

Was suddenly reminded by D that we had a lunch date at Hainan Shaoye arranged a month ago. D had made reservations a month ago. Apparently reservations are difficult to make here. Yes it was packed for lunch. But I don't think they have a one-month reservation wait list...but yes you need to make reservations. Environment: Rather nice views, don't you think? 一隻海南雞
You can order one whole chicken. And they're really honest - no missing portions i think! The meat was tender and smooth. You could get rid of the excess fat easily by peeling off the skin. Jab the thing into a bit of sweet soy sauce. Delish.

燒雞
Hainan Shaoye is known for its 海南雞 but honestly if i had to choose between that and 燒雞 i would pick 燒雞! Richer flavours and crisp skin won me over. It came with a bowl of 雞油飯. Again, fragrant, but not too oily. D said they made it less oily in response to certain suggestions made by customers, who wanted a healthier meal. Alright. But healthy = less tasty. There you have it .

肉骨茶

Now this 肉骨茶 was truly outstanding. I tried 肉骨茶 in Singapore a few weeks ago at Maxwell Food Center, which was supposed to be the authentic stuff, but authenticity aside, I think the 肉骨茶 prepared by Hainan Shaoye was tastier. Stronger flavours, less watery, a bit sweeter too. I had the pleasure of sucking on the rib. Juicy and thoroughly cooked.

Rojak
Very happy when i saw this on the menu. Reminded me of the Rojak i had back at Maxwell Food Center. Sadly this can't compare. The sauce was rather disappointing! The fruits, fried dough and other vegetables are supposed to be drenched in sauce. And finely diced peanuts. But this wasn't quite like the authentic thing...no harm trying, although it's not like the traditional Rojak.

Skewers and black turnip pudding
Not bad. Beef skewers were kind of tough but i'ts OK once you dip it into satay sauce. The satay sauce was pretty good.
Black turnip pudding: essentially 炒黑年糕. Not sure how it differs from plain turnip pudding, but it was quite tasty. The only complaint being its lack of texture. The pudding itself wasn't chewy enough. Kind of pasty. Would prefer more bite. But it tastes good.

Conclusion:
Would want to come again. Yes.

Note: if you come in the afternoon, I would actually advise against sitting next to the windows. My eyes (and subsequently head) hurt after half an hour. Not good.

My wife & I tried hoi nam chicken few times in Singpaore and the food quality & taste is much much more better than that offered here!

Moreover, there is a limited choice on their menu and there's not much you can choose from except chicken.

The bill at some HKD 300 is surely not good value for money for this food quality. I am more than sure that I won't dine in this restaurant again.

I made reservations about a week prior to our visit, and was utterly disappointed with the service over the phone. This restaurant is no cha chaan teng (local tea restaurant) or dai pai dong (outdoor Chinese food stalls), and so I expected a little more I guess. When I spoke to the lady over the phone, I asked if I could make a reservation. She then replied with me a 'when? because if it's for dinner we are fully booked till next month'. So I told her I wanted to come for lunch, Thursday, at 11.

So I told her I wanted to come for lunch, Thursday, at 11.45. She then said they were full too, and so I asked what time they open? "11.30 in the morning". I then hesitated, but asked "how about 11.30 then, can I have a table for two then?" She said "yes, we can do 11.30". With a reminder that they have a 10 minute wait policy before giving our table away, I thought to myself that was rather b.s., since it was technically 5 minutes apart from my original time plan, plus it was not like the restaurant was prepared to kick us out if we stayed passed 12 or 1pm...or at all! A table free is a table free, if they weren't going to do two rounds at lunch hour they should've given me the table regardless of time.

Okay, phone conversation aside, our service at the restaurant was acceptable. We actually arrived on the dot and were turned away because their kitchen was "not ready yet" and give them 5 or so minutes. Say whatt????

Now, food!
We decided we would forgo the signature Hainan and Roast Chicken Rice set, and went for a Bak Kut Teh ($88) (for me) and a Seafood Laksa ($88) (for E). These lunch time 'sets' come with a drink too - coffee or tea.
Our sets arrived together, and we tried each other's, to see what we liked/disliked. My Bak Kut Teh was most disappointing, since I was expecting something more herbal and peppery with tender ribs... that it not what I got.

In my dark red soup there were plenty of wolfberries and dates (and even dried lychees) in this soup to make it way too sweet for Bak Kut Teh and resemble the Chinese herbal soup (for the ladies - "bo huet"/help produce more blood). I'm not saying the soup was bad, I just wasn't expecting it to taste so sweet and mask any signs of spices and pepper (if any was added...). Other components included dried tofu puffs (tofu-pok), coriander for garnish and pork ribs that were so dry, tough and chewy I struggled to eat them...

The other parts of my lunch set included a dish of chopped deep-fried dough sticks ("yao-tiu"), a bowl of white rice and some chilli-infused dark sweet soy sauce and a few pieces of bak choy. While the dough sticks didn't not impress, being soggy and nothing like the ones at good local restaurants serving congee, I loved the rice! Each grain doesn't stick to one another, and was cooked perfectly - not soft but not undercooked either...pure comfort with the dark soy sauce. Ahhhh I must make a mental note to ask what brand of rice they use when I return!

E's Laksa was also not what we were expecting, but not bad. Hainan Shaoye's version is spicier than the laksas I've had locally, but same spice-level as they do it in Singapore. The soup however, is very watered-down to a thin broth with a mild taste of coconut only. Now a little mention of other restaurants serving Sing/Malay cuisine - Good Satay in TST East offers a good bowl of laksa that has a very rich broth - too rich to drink but delicious nonetheless. Meanwhile, Sabah Malaysian Restaurant in Wanchai has a hearty curry broth that is right in between Hainan Shaoye's and Good Satay which we thought took first place between the three.

Hainan Shaoye's big bowl of seafood laksa came with toppings of tofu puffs, sliced fish cakes, two large shrimps and some fishballs. These all fared very well, and the two shrimps which E gave to me were fresh and bouncy.

We vowed to return, not for a repeat of the food we had ordered this day, but for the highly controversial Chicken rice meals!

I went to Hainan Shaoye last night with a group of friends and we were all really surprised at the decor and location of this restaurant. The view is amazing, overlooking the harbor and the decor was simple yet elegant. I've been to many Hainan Chicken Restaurants and this one in my opinion is up there in my top 3. The presentation of the chicken rice was great, it came with the usual 3 sauces plus 1, rice, chicken, veggies and soup. The soup also came in a teapot which I thought was a nice

The rice came out to be very tasty, not too oily (good chicken rice is not suppose to be oily, but rather dry, a common misconception). Portion size was just right (I went for dinner and came out very satisfied and full!). I don't know why some people on here thought there wasn't enough chicken (maybe you need a gastric bypass), but portion wise it was good for dinner. I'm not sure if the portion size during lunch is smaller or the same but either way it got me full and I was hungry! All in all it was a good experience and would definitely go again/recommend it to friends. Be ready to wait in line, but then again I guess that's the price you pay for good food!

First time I went in there, i watched a drama inside the restaurant. It was totally ridiculous. When we were trying to enjoy the meal, all of a sudden, we heard a big sound. Everyone stopped eating and look around. Finally we figure out the chef is BANGING the glasses that separated the kitchen with the floor. As we were thinking what's happening, we all can hear is the chef is swearing in Cantonese like crazy. And which the manager seems helpless. ( I guess that's the manager, because she's wearing a suit) We dunno what the heck is going on with this restaurant. But we ignored it and continue eating. Of course we already lost the mood, can't really taste the food right.

Today, second time. Totally toally disappointed. The Hainan chicken is only meat without chicken flavour. Texture of the meat is kinda rough, not smooth at all.
I ordered a Seafood Laksa myself. The look of the Laksa is good. However, prawns are not fresh at all. U can taste something weird and you can see the prawn's meat is already falling apart when u tear the shell. My stomach didn't feel good after indeed. I think that's the worst prawns I have ever had.

The only thing can pass is the satay. Not very good taste, Just so so. But I guess that's already the best.

I truly recommend you not to go there. I wouldn't give it any more chance myself and I already asked my friends not going there. I wonder how can a restauant like this can survive in World Trade Centre.

我點了海南雞飯餐,雞要燒的那種。因為怕膽固醇,我特意叫侍應給我白飯便可以了。不過侍應很善意地介紹他們的雞油飯比坊間的健康,用鮮雞湯和香料烹製,叫我一試。那好吧,可能真有驚喜。而友人則點了有龍蝦的海鮮喇沙,我們另外還點了雞肉沙嗲和黑白蘿蔔糕等食物。

點菜後約十分鐘便送上雞肉沙嗲和黑白蘿蔔糕等菜式。雞肉沙嗲比較平庸,而且不夠熱,不算突出。黑和白蘿蔔糕做得不錯,不過我覺得黑比白好吃,可能我吃了黑蘿蔔糕在先,白的那款就相對變得較平淡了。黑蘿蔔糕上的醬油很香濃帶甜,蔥花很香,吃了一口後便停不了!唯一挑剔是可以再炒燶點。

侍應陸續端上主角海南雞飯和龍蝦海鮮喇沙餐,還為我介紹那小小的皮蛋慕絲蒸蛋前菜和醬料。看到那海南雞飯和龍蝦海鮮喇沙後覺得分量實在驚人,一個女生實在很難吃得完整個餐!那皮蛋慕絲蒸蛋很特別,很有創意!連平時不吃皮蛋的我都吃了幾口!海南雞飯真有驚喜,飯不油不膩很香口!加點甜醬拌雞飯吃更加美味一流!侍應果然沒介紹錯。雞湯很好喝,那小壺把溫度保存得很好!可以的話我想再添一碗呢。雖然雞不是新鮮的,不過燒雞夠味亦嫩滑,我根本沒沾過任何一款醬料。而最窩心是那份菜心,很鮮嫩而且沒有煮過久。


試了朋友的龍蝦海鮮喇沙。湯帶點椰香和辣味,而且配料如帶子,蝦和龍蝦等都很鮮味。大概$110圓的一個超分量龍蝦海鮮喇沙倒算合理。不過,我對太香濃的湯底很抗拒,所以還是海南雞飯適合我。

不得不提這裡的奶茶很好喝,絕對是水準之作!


原來友人在樓下的Cova訂了蛋糕送上驚喜。侍應很有禮地端上已插上蠟燭的蛋糕和一句Happy Birthday!到離開時,其他侍應又送上祝賀說話,實在禮貌得有點過分吧,哈!


臨走時才發現那裡有個半開放式廚房,一隻隻雞掛在那裡很有港式燒臘店的影子。

The good:We ordered Hainan chicken rice, satay and Ban Kut Teh. The chicken rice was excellent, rice very fragrant, not greasy and the soup was very flavorful. The good:
We ordered Hainan chicken rice, satay and Ban Kut Teh. The chicken rice was excellent, rice very fragrant, not greasy and the soup was very flavorful. Now, on to the bad:
The wait in line is ridiculous. Unlike other restaurants, where you receive a ticket and wait to be called, Hainan Shaoye has a questionable management style where everyone lines up, without being asked how many are dining with you. This makes the whole process extremely disorganized, and some of the patrons became very restless because of this. Perhaps they were trying to recreate the 'first come first served' atmosphere of a Kopi Tiam? In any case this did not create a good first impression, and upon entering the place, there were a few tables that were left empty the whole time. When asked, the answer was dubious; that they were reserved. Couldn't these seats have been given to those poor souls waiting for more than an hour in line?
Halfway through the wait, I was ready to leave because of how incompetently the wait was managed.

So, in conclusion, the food is excellent, but the wait is an absolute pain. Shame really, I would be a repeat customer if it weren't for this. I would not return again unless they revamp their policies or if I can get a reservation, which is impossible right now because of it's popularity.

Through the magazine, I knew about Hainan Shaoye and the chef is a great chef from Singapore. Also, from my friends, i gotta know that the owner of this restaurant is a very young man. I was so interested as there arnt much restaurant that serves good Hainan chicken rice. So I went there to give a try. However, the food didnt come out with what I expected. Besides, the chicken there has nothing to compare the one in City Garden Hotel Cafe and Marina Club Cafe. The chicken lost its flavour and the meat and texture isnt as soft and smooth.

As this restaurant mainly sell Hainan Chicken Rice, when they cant even get their signature dish done nicely, how would this restaurant make anymore good food? I honestly doubt that.

This isn't a good experience of Hainan chicken rice. This is not recommended.
