On Monday 27/6/2022, we had a birthday dinner at Greenhouse, CWB. We stayed there from 6:00 – 8:15 pm. The food was satisfactory. The service was average but a Chinese young man (not sure if his name is ‘hin’)’s service is better than average. Well, his service should be set as the right standard for the whole restaurant. Our last order was a mango roti as we would like to have some dessert. To our surprise, we saw a lady server holding the dish and lighting the candle when delivering the dessert to us (though without any smile on her face nor uttering any word like “Happy Birthday”). On the plate we saw “Happy Birthday to Klement”. All of us appreciated the gesture though we didn’t make such a request at all. However, when we paid the bill, we noticed that there was a $20 charge for “Wording in Plate”. The appreciation was immediately turned to another surprise, an unpleasant one. It was a real bummer that the restaurant had made – We, the customers, did not make any such request; however, since it was a kind gesture or initiative of the restaurant to do so, it should not be charged. We do not understand the logic of the restaurant by going an extra mile but with a charge - it will simply cause disappointment and even anger from the customers to the restaurant.
Why the restaurant knew that day was somebody’s birthday? It was because we booked through Open Rice and Open Rice asked about the purpose of such booking. We could not find any terms or conditions stipulating that “There will be a $20 charge for Wording in Plate if you order something like a cake…”
