Makcik (read: middle-aged lady) greeted me with a friendly "sit" while ladling steamed rice from a massive white rice cooker at the far corner of the restaurant. Ordered the nasi goreng (choice of spicy or non-spicy, I chose the former) and iced milk tea, which was incidentally called 'es teh susu' instead of 'teh ais' in Malaysia - I speculate it could be the difference in the order in which said drink is prepared (ice first, then tea, then milk as opposed to tea first then ice) but I digress.N

Nasi goreng is reminiscent of the sort one would expect from a standard street-side stall (e.g. warung, mamak stall) complete with plastic plate and glass. Was momentarily transported through a culinary portal back to Malaysia. If I may be so daring to say, the food is authentic enough for me to engage in a Malay chat with aforementioned makcik for well over 10 minutes post-meal (which I did)

Would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat

I was a little bit nervous to go inside since I thought the shop staff wouldn’t be able to speak English, but they can understand english very well ☺️ The shop is very cute and has a wide variety in their menu, the food is affordable as well. There is also a small section near the entrance with many Indonesian snacks and noodles. The shop owner was very cute, always smiling and very kind. There was even a Indonesian customer who helped me choose what side dishes I want😭💕

I ordered the nasi campur with fried potato, beef, egg and some kind of vegetables looks like bean sprouts. You can choose two types of meat, chicken or beef. IT IS SO GOOD!! It is spicy.. and if you want you can also get chilli oil 🤤🤤🤤. It is $55 and I think it’s very good price 🥺I will come back here again 👍👍👍👍👍

It's small and tucked away on the 2nd level but I kid you not, this is the best and the most authentic Indonesian restaurant I have ever been to. For those of you who can have experience real indo food and flavor, this is it. The spices and peanut sauces reminds me of back when I visited Indonesia! My favorite dish is defined the Siomay! I can keep eating those for days... portions are generous and the price is so good.

Finding the place was a little difficult, but once we climbed the stairs to the small restaurant, we were welcomed in and given menus.  Surrounded by smiling faces, the Indonesian customers were all very happy to help us with our selection.

We opted for ketoprak first.  The dish is sweet, spicy and flavoured with peanuts.  The noodles and tofu and other little treasures in it were exciting on the palate and it was a fantastic dish.

The second dish we chose was ayam goreng kampung.  The countryside fried chicken came out a little under at first, but they instantly rectified the problem and the juicy chicken leg was crispy and moist.  Delicious with the selections of sambal and kecap, both dishes were winners.

We would definitely go again and the little warung doesn't break the bank either.

I've not been to Java, so my exposure to Indonesian food is limited to what I've had in Bali (which is pretty awesome), and the Indo restaurants in HK, of which I've tried a few. This one seemed promising from the reviews, so we went exploring. The first couple of floors housed an Indian restaurant with "Malay" cuisine, a few other Indo Foto/Fax shops etc, so Warung Malang fit right into place. The first couple of floors housed an Indian restaurant with "Malay" cuisine, a few other Indo Foto/Fax shops etc, so Warung Malang fit right into place. This place is mostly visited by the natives, but on the odd occasion you'll see others (like us) there for the food.

This restaurant has a few more choices than the other nearby Indo restaurants and I had a hard time choosing what I wanted to try. We ended up with the Nasi Campur which was a great decision as it came with 5 accompanying dishes - curry chicken, beef rendang, deep fried bean curd, beans with veg, and a hard boiled egg covered in spicy sauce. Then came the Rujak Petis which was a vegetable salad (though it had pineapple, apple and pear slices in it) with shrimp paste, and we asked for it to be extra spicy, and boy did it pack a punch! It also have bean sprouts, green leafy beg, bean curd and 2 big rice curd - lontong. For those who need an explanation what rice curd is, it's like cheese curd, only that the softer-than-usual and sticky rice is packed into a ball shaped mass, with the water squeezed out of it, which then gives it a dense, moist and chewy texture. It was a novelty to me, but it was love at first sight, as this is the kind of texture I love in my carbs! (And got carried away and forgot to take a photo, but it really just looks like a dish with brown sauce all over it). Finally we had the lontong sate ayam, yup, more rice curd with chicken satay. I liked the sauce with the satay which isn't the peanuty kind like in thai restaurants, but a sweet soy sauce with some chili in it, but it was goo-ooo-ood, especially with the lontong as well.

For desserts we had more sweet sticky rice dumplings - Lue Lupis which is not to be mixed up with Kue Lapis the layered cake, which was 2 very tasty pieces of glutinous rice with coconut flakes and a syrupy sauce over it. They ran out of a few other snacks that we wanted, or we would have stuffed ourselves with these yummy delicacies.

The prices for some dishes weren't that cheap - $100 for 10 lamb satays and $80 for chicken, but the rest of the menu was priced at the $35-40 mark, and the snacks are a steal at $6-15 each. Fantastic meal at bargain price.

I crave for 'good' Indonesian food! So when i found this restaurant, i was more than thrilled!

I started with es campur. I have had many es campur whilst in Indonesia and I have to say, this one is good but nothing is as good as the es campur in Indonesia. The es campur was deliciously sweet. It contained, grass jelly, cendol, palm seed, and jackfruit. The es campur in Indonesia has avocado, which makes it so SO much tastier. The es campur was refreshing and absolutely delicious! It was as good as the first time I had it.

Being both Indonesians, we love our fried snacks. Bad for us but deliciously good. A and I both love jagung goreng (corn fritters) and tempe goreng (fried soy beans) so one of each. The jagung goreng was crunchy yet fluffy and had real corn which was deliciously scrumptious. I have missed good jagung goreng. The tempe goreng was a little cold but it was still yummy. Eaten with a bit of sambal and kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) it was perfect.

A wanted to try the soto ayam, which is a yellow spicy soup with either vermicelli or rice, with chicken, hard-boiled eggs, potatoes and shallots. Tumeric is added as one of the ingredients to get that yellow chicken broth. The soto ayam was authentic – although I still think Mum’s better, it was still pretty good for those who love soto ayam. It was a tad salty for my liking as we didn’t have rice or vermicelli, but it was still delicious.

Now, the famous bakso – there is something about Indonesian bakso that’s different. I can’t really explain it but it’s just different to the Chinese beef balls. We both didn’t want any noodles with it, just the bakso which includes, one bakso, one pangsit goreng (fried dumplings), and one stuffed tofu. Only ONE OF EACH! I was a little disappointed about the serving, just ONE bakso? However, the bakso was absolutely authentic and tasty. I love bakso and can eat at least half a dozen in one sitting, so imagine my disappointment when there was only one! The soup had a little too much msg for my liking, but otherwise, it reminded me of home!

A and I did not stop there, we didn’t get a chance to eat ketoprak last time we were here, so wanted to try some. Ketoprak consists of lontong (steamed rice in banana leaf), tofu, sliced cabbage, vermicelli, sprouts, chips and sauce made from bean, brown sugar and chili. It’s usually a street food and very similar to gado-gado. The only difference is the ingredients they mix in the peanut sauce. We asked for spicy and indeed it was spicy. It was full of flavor and incredibly delicious. (Sorry photos is blurry – we both wanted to dig in!)

Warung Malang, it's a humble lil' place on the 2nd floor of Dragon Rise, Causeway Bay. No wonder it's not exactly popular with the locals but I'm sure almost all Indonesians living in Hong Kong knows this place. Not Indonesian? No worries! The friendly gentleman who looks after the place speaks fluent Cantonese (Wayyy more fluent than me. Oppps)

Once we were seated, a plate of condiments was placed in front of us. We Indonesians love our sambals (chilli condiments). There are sambal terasi, sambal bakso and sambal kecap. I wish I could bring these bowls of sambal home

The mixed rice was absolutely delicious! It has telor balado (fried hard boiled egg topped with chilli), sayur lodeh with rambak (vegetable cooked in coconut milk and spices), curry chicken, sambal goreng tempe (soy bean cake cooked in chilli and spices), and beef rendang. Everything on the place's delicious and taste really authentic, bold, strong flavors. It definitely transported me back to Indonesia. I've also added an additional perkedel (fried potato cake), and it's delicious and authentic.

I saw some fried snacks at the counter, and surely I had to have some. I took the perkedel jagung (corn fritter) and tempe goreng (fried soy bean cake). At first I thought that the perkedel jagung didn't look freshly fried...but when I tasted it, it's yummy. Crunchy on the outside; fluffy, tasty and corny (in a good way) inside. Consume with a bit of sambal terasi for perfection. The tempe goreng wasn't freshly fried, but that's pretty much how it's served in most Indonesian eateries back home. I devoured it with a generous serving of sambal kecap...and yum!

Indonesian bakso (beef ball) is very different from the Chinese ones. It probably has less of beef flavor, but what I love is how chewy it is. It's not bouncy kinda chewy, it's a bit more...elastic. I guess you gotta try it to understand it ^_* I find the fried dumpling (pangsit goreng), stuffed tofu, rice and egg noodles a bit unnecessary, next time I'll go for just the good ol' bakso and broth.
The art of handling the broth of the bakso...it's served plain, garnished with celery and fried shallot, add your own condiments to create your own "flavor", kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), chilli sauce, vinegar, and salt...until you achieve your own perfect version of broth.
Slurp~!

This time I went for sate kambing (lamb skewers), the meat was super tender and flavorful (from the spices, it doesn't have a strong lamb flavor), and the peanut sauce served with chopped shallot tasted authentic too. Love it!

I tried their es cendol, which is rice flour bits served with coconut milk, palm sugar and ripe jack fruit pieces...it was pretty authentic. Not bad at all

The owner told me that she tried to keep everything as authentic as possible...and I think she was pretty successful at that. She warned me not to visit on Sundays as the place would be fully packed with Indonesian domestic helpers on their day off. Duly noted, and I'll definitely go back with more friends and let them try authentic Indonesian food.

NASI CAMPUR LENGICAP -

This is basically a mixed rice, kind of similar to Nasi Lemak but of Indonesian origin and taste. It is also slightly more authentic than many local Indonesian-Chinese versions. Comes with Spicy Turmeric Curried Chicken on the bone, Tempeh strips, a Dry version of Beef Rendang which was stringy and pretty dry rather than moist but surprisingly carrying a good addictive boldish flavour, some sort of Pickled Eggplants & Deep Fried Spicy Egg adorned with some sort of Sambal on top.

Condiments and sauces such as Sambal Kecap Manis (sweetened soy sauce), Sambal Asli (Chili sauce) and Sambal Lanpang (another Chili sauce) are available for unlimited topping as you wish. Actually there are too many versions of Sambal sauces in both Indonesia and Malaysia cuisine and elsewhere, which I have never studied nor remember which is which - so hopefully one day I will understand their differences! Not the technical expert on Indonesian food, even though I really enjoy it !

CENDOL-

I am yet to work out whether this should be classified as a dessert or a drink! I guess its a never ending saga to discover the truth or real definitions, since something like a 木瓜雪耳糖水 in comparison can both be a drink or a dessert lately in HK too. Anyway the one here had a fair bit of Coconuttiness, Pandan Jelly strips and Palm Sugar at the bottom - it doesn't have other additional beans nor shaved ice which I had come to expect, but nevertheless this was ok.

OVERALL, THIS FELT LIKE AN INDONESIAN CANTEEN STYLE FOOD. IT IS AUTHENTIC NO DOUBT, RATHER THAN THE TONED-DOWN VERSION YOU GET AT MANY OTHER PLACES. THE FOOD IS NOT PERFECTLY EXECUTED YES, BUT SOMEHOW I FOUND IT QUITE ENJOYABLE FOR ME, EVEN IF I HAVE HAD AND KNOW OF BETTER OUT THERE! ITS PROBABLY BECAUSE I FELT THAT THIS IS MORE SIMILAR TO OUR CHA CHAAN TENG'S, WHERE HERE THEY SERVE TYPICAL LAYMEN QUALITY FOOD, THINK INDONESIAN STYLED PEASANT-FOOD. I SHOULD THEREFORE JUDGE IT AS SUCH?

THE FOOD QUALITY HERE IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT IN THE END, ITS MORE ABOUT THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE...
