Boyfriend and I came here for lunch on a Saturday as it was new and pretty quiet as not many people in Causeway Bay come to this area to eat. Located in Jardine's Crescent, among the dozens of women's clothing stalls, is this small Indonesian restaurant. The shop said it has branches in Indonesia and Singapore and has been here since 1998. The restaurant is very small, but very clean. It was so new that the seats still had the plastic wrap on them. A few photos of Indonesian life were scattered on the walls. The menu was in English, Chinese and Indonesian. Not sure what to order, we were suggested their signature dish: ayam penyet (smashed chicken). We added a beef soto and chicken satay. I had an Indonesian sweet tea. This was pretty good. Nice and smooth with a good amount of sweetness. Boyfriend had a boxed taramind drink. Tasted like Chinese sour plum drink. Which I like though boyfriend wasn't too happy with it. Ayam penyet (or smashed chicken) was a quarter fried chicken, a piece of fried tempe (a fermented soybean cake), piece of tofu, some cucumbers and lettuce and rice. Though this was their signature dish, the chicken was dry and cold. It obviously was fried for quite some time. The fried tempe wasn't something I liked. It tasted like dried beans. The tofu tasted like Chiu Chow style tofu which I didn't mind but boyfriend didn't like. It was to be served with a chili sauce. The staff gave us two to try. The one on the right was SUPER spicy. Boyfriend can eat spicy and even he starting downing his drink as fast as he could. But he did say it was fragrant though very spicy. Beef soto was like a nonspicy curry soup with beef brisket and an egg inside. You were put your bowl of rice in it and eat it together. I wasn't much of a fan as I don't like to eat rice in soup but boyfriend said it was good. Chicken satay was the only item that was hot. The chicken was moist. The sauce was strange as it wasn't traditionally only peanut satay but it was mixed with teriyaki sauce, making it sweet. I wasn't too keen on the sauce as I like more traditinal satay sauce. Though it was cheap for us, in terms of other Indonesian restaurants in the area, it would be considered pricey. Perhaps due to the fact it's from a chain restaurant in Indonesia? I won't return. Except maybe for the drink as that was pretty good and a lot more hygenic than the other Indoesian restaurants in Causeway Bay.
