Upon my dad's suggestion to go yum cha on a weekday morning on my birthday, we were eager to find out if this new Jade Garden (翠園) would somehow live up to the bygone standard of The Jade Cantonese Restaurant (翠晶軒) by the same Maxim's group at this very location eight years ago. When we arrived, the storefront looked all right but there wasn't any receptionist so we just went in and chose our seats. We figured it was still quite early so we had to wait a bit to be served. The décor was nice and we chose a window seat overlooking the open area of Island Eastern Corridor with clear sky and some green.
We liked the dim sum menu with a lot of traditional items and we were glad that they had the same runny custard bun like TJCR. In general, dim sum were served steamy hot, portion was big but taste-wise, it was not bad but just not tasty. We ordered more than we could eat to save for mom.
When we asked for a takeaway bag, the server just tossed out this add a dollar per box comment, in the most cha chaan tend style. She was not rude but the tone was so out of place. When we left, It was also a marvel to see the lobby filled with so many seniors.
With this so-so service and food, we probably won't be back any time soon.
