「Mejillones Mussels with Traditionall Marinera Sauce」$135

Fofo by El Willy offers contemporary Spanish at a sleek setting and romantic ambience. The restaurant is mostly furnished in white colour compliments with a light beige wood tiled floor and accent with a colourful stripe sofa at the far back of the restaurant. Remember to reserve your table by the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the hectic but beautiful central city view.

The Dining City Restaurant Week Menu features a 9 courses menu priced at HKD438 which is a fairly good deal. The courses are pretty diverse with both hot and cold appetisers, sea and land dishes, a paella-like dishes and a platter of 3 desserts to end the night. Sounds like a lot of food, but be warned everything comes in small portion.

Pickled Garlic, Gherkins and Olives
This probably is the best dish Fofo offered for the whole night. The olives was meaty and sweet in taste. The Gherkins was sour and crisp. Yet the most amazing pickle on the plate was this pickled garlic where no garlic taste could be tasted and the texture was like extremely crisp bamboo shoot.

“Cecina” Artesanal air dry beef with catalan style tomato bread
The Artesanal air dry beef was my favourite dish of the night. The air dry beef had an intense taste and was not as savoury as other air dry hams. It also had a long lingering aftertaste. The air dry beef complimented the crunchy tomato toast well by bring up the tomato flavour of the toast.

The smoked salmon was sandwiched with two thin airy crisps topped with some trout eggs & oil caviar. Even the salmon was quite smoky and smooth, the dish was overall quite bland in taste.

The scallop was extremely smooth and fresh like sashimi cuts. The avocado and shallot purée was creamy and smooth, but the flavours was too strong and overpowered the scallop taste.

“Esparragos” White asparagus salad, tomato, piquillos & mayonnaise foam
I hesitated about the dish as white asparagus is a winter ingredient, yet the white asparagus tasted great and sweet. This dish was a cold dish with sweet piquillos and mayonnaise foam but the spinach was a bit bitter. I generally like this dish.

“Lubina” Sea bass with potato foam, “romesco” skin & baby vegetables
This romesco sauce on the Lubina sea bass tasted like the Chinese Dish "Streamed Cod fish with fried soy bean (豆酥魚)" but a milder version of it. The flavour was strong with bean taste. The sea bass was tender but was not smooth enough.

“Cerdo Iberico” Marinated & slow cooked Iberico pork “secreto” with white beans cake
The Iberico pork was super chewy and caused a bit of a pain to my jaw. Despite the texture, it was quite flavourful with the sauce. The white bean mash was quite smooth in texture but bland.

“Arroz” Catalan style of lobster, mushrooms & artichokes juicy rice
I would not have guessed the seafood in the middle of the juicy rice was lobster as it was quite small in size. The lobster tasted kind of bitter with some alcohol taste. The texture was like crab meat, which was what I thought it was. The juicy rice tasted like paella but much more saucy. The sauce was robust and rich in flavour with lots of mushrooms in it. The paella was in general too rich in taste for me.

Churros - The chirps was crispy and fluffy! I wish there is a thick chocolate sauce for me to dip in

Milk pudding - The milk pudding was smooth, bouncy , milky and creamy.
White chocolate mousse with strawberry - The white chocolate mousse was mildly sweet and was not very chocolaty, but the texture was so smooth it almost dissolved instantly on your palate. Right underneath the mousse was a layer of duo-texture, crispy and soft pastry layer penetrated with strawberry sauce. Delicious!

As I mentioned earlier, the portion of the 9 courses was rather small and even a small eater as I am, I did not feel particularly full. Above all, the overall flavour was not very complex or interesting. If you are looking for delicious Spanish food, try 22 Ships, Tapeo or BCN.

Tapas are one of my favourite styles of food so I was really looking forward to an evening at Fofo by el Willy. The restaurant itself is on the 20th floor and hence has a nice view out the window. The decor is white and this can sometimes make for a clinical hushed atmosphere but it was quite the opposite at Fofo by el Willy. It was very relaxed and felt almost cozy. The staff were the right amount of friendly and helpful. You could easily get their attention yet did not feel they were standing over you.

The first dishes came out promptly - air dried beef alongside tomato on bread and smoked salmon toast with trout eggs and oil caviar. I found the beef worked better when eaten with the tomato on bread than on its' own. The salmon was tasty.

Next up was scallop ceviche, white asparagus salad thirdly garlic and chill prawns. The scallop ceviche was delicious and the avocado and shallot dressing that it sat on (with a hint of coriander) worked perfectly with it. The asparagus salad was quite tangy. Tasting the asparagus on their own was enough to screw up your face with how tangy it was but when eaten with the accompanying tomato and piquillo peppers was toned down enough to enjoy thoroughly. The garlic and chili prawns were two prawns, one each. Gambas al ajillo or pil pil is one of my favourite dishes so I suppose I was a little disappointed when I saw two prawns. However, they were large and cooked perfectly and the accompanying sauce was light and tasty with a subtle flavour of garlic and chili.

These dishes were taken away to be replaced with sea bass with potato foam and a dish of marinated slow cooked iberico pork. The sea bass was presented in the middle of the plate surrounded by a mustard coloured sauce. This was my least favourite dish. It promised so much with its' colour but failed to deliver. Apart from a very mild taste of smoked spanish paprika the overall dish was utterly bland. The marinated pork however transported me back to bbq's at home cooked by my spanish step-father, I just loved the flavour and would return just for this. I did not like what it sat on though. A white gloop made of white beans that again was totally bland.

Next up was our final savoury dish, that of mushroom and artichoke rice topped with lobster. This was a hearty dish with a lovely rich flavour. The rice still had a bite to it and if you were not already full from the previous dishes (I was) this was sure to send you home feeling satisfied.

Finally our 'desserts festival' came out. Three modestly sized desserts. I cannot remember exactly what all three were, one was similar to crema catalana, there were churros with a delicious drizzle of raspberry coulis and another creamy one topped with fruit. All I know is that despite a full belly these disappeared rapidly. They were light, sweet and delicious.

Breaking it down pricewise each dish cost approximately $43hkd and that there is a bargain. Restaurant week rocks!

I really enjoyed my evening at Fofo by el Willy and I will definitely return again.
Other Info. : Wine selection and price points were good. Try at least one of the sangrias.

Please accept my apologies for the brevity of this review and lack of photos, however I did feel the need to let the foodies of the 852 know about my experience at Fofo by El Willy.

I went with Ms C for my birthday on a Wednesday eve. A few of my friends had already been and regaled stories of different dishes that are 'must haves'. Crispy Pork, Scallop Sashimi, Gazpacho, Chorizo Tortilla and Churros.

They offered a taster menu for two that included some of these dishes so we ordered this and an extra portion of Crispy Pork as this is one of my favourite tapas dishes (Tapeo does this very well).

The menu consisted of many dishes and gave us the opportunity to try a selection of different dishes that we may not have ordered had we chosen a la carte.

Without going through every dish, the highlights for me were the tuna sashimi, the crispy pork, the Iberico cooked pork, the Foie Gras and the best dish of the night in my opinion had to be the sea bass in foam with garden peas, thye skin was crispy and delicious, the flesh soft and moist and the sauce didnt mask the taste of the fish too much. A disappointment was the prawn as this was too salty and not enough for two people anyway.

Service was good, however the tables were very close together, almost so that I felt like I was sitting on the lap of the two girls on the next table, they wish! The only gripe we had was that when Ms C booked the table she requested happy birthday be inscribed on the plate for dessert which they insisted they would do, however, they forgot, ho-hum.

Overall the food excellent 9/10, service good 7/10, price good 7/10.

It's my first time having this, and I found the concept of the dish very unique, however it was a bit on the salty side. Not sure if it's because of the chorizo, which is salty in nature.

this suckling pig was a delight! They brought the entire pig to the table to show us first (and as you probably predicted, lots of phones / cameras came out to take a photo of it
) They then divided it up so that it could be shared among each group of 4. Each 'portion' was served with onions and potatoes. This felt like a 'main course' and could definitely act as one.

Their white sangria is full of fruit and really good! You can order by glass or in a jar. The manager told us the reason why even the fruit tastes good is because they soak the fruit so that it actually absorbs the white wine.

A very good experience and will definitely revisit when I have the chance!

-cognac, tempranillo, cointreau, peach liqueur & cinnamon

4) "vieiras" scallop ceviche (hk$98)
-avocado, crispy shallot

5) organic eggs cooked at 63 degrees in crispy potatoes & onions nest (hk$168)
-with teruel ham

6) crispy suckling pig w/potatoes, onions & black truffle gratin (hk$130)

7) churros (hk$68)
-spanish crispy fried doughs with warm chocolate and vanilla ice cream

-with almond dacquoise & chocolate jelly

The seafood paella has a good portion of seafood on top and the rice on the bottom is cooked to perfection with a tasteful sauce. The bottom of the pan is coated with more crispier rice so it's a mixture of chewy and crispy all together.

The presentation for the king crab salad is so gorgeous! It's stacked in layers. The top layer is minced crab meat, then theres a layer of avocado, and finally finished with greens on the bottom.

With a party of four, we went for lunch at Fofo, and it was such a good experience that we'll definitely be back.
We all had the brunch menu, which consists of a selection of appetizers, one tapa per person, a paella that two people are sharing, and a chocolate dessert. It was a bit odd that the waiter started out by asking us if we wanted some cava (sparkly) to start (which we did) because the menu actually included a glass of cava per person - so we had two. The cava came with a kind of bruschetta, just that it was not tomatoes but grated green papaya, maybe with a little tomato, and some olives on the side, which were both pretty good.
All of the appetizers were excellent; bite-size pieces of different things, all beautifully presented and thoughtfully combined. The one I liked least were the ham croquettes, simply because they were a bit bland in comparison to the other, somewhat more color- ad flavorful things. For tapas, we had the slow-cooked octopus, which was delicious, combined with potatoes; the lamb loin, which was tender and juicy; the marinated beef skewers accompanied by some really nice hummus; and pork with black truffles - wonderful stuff! We were actually quite full when the paella came. We had picked the seafood and the black squid ink paellas; both were very tasty, but both had decidedly too few things inside. On top of both were a few mussels and a dollop of aioli mayonnaise, and in there a handful of pieces of bell pepper, and I even found an occasional bit of squid, but overall, there was not enough *in* the paella to make it really exciting.
Unfortunately, the dessert included in the menu could not be substituted by another one. It was churro, again, for share among two persons; sticks of fried dough that you dip in melted chocolate, and some very good vanilla ice cream on the side. Nice, but not too exciting. I ordered the yuzu mousse in addition, and it was simply delicious, really flavorful and smooth and refreshing.
The wine selection on the menu was good; quite varied, and lots to choose from. Even our wine connoisseur was satisfied.

The place itself is beautiful - on the 20th floor, the restaurant overlooks part of Central and onto the mountains, toward HK Park, so there's lots to look at outside. Inside, the decoration looks more Scandinavian due to the white furnishings. Combined with an eager use of air condition, it felt cold in more than one regard (and no, they did not turn down the air con when we asked for it). The restaurant filled up rather quickly, and while the music was initially rather loud, in the end the noise by customers completely drowned out the music. It was by no means noisy, though.
The restaurant also has a terrace, one floor up, but they only open it at 6pm, and we were not allowed to sit out there with drinks after our meal. We were allowed to go there to smoke (and take pictures), but they would not offer service there.

Overall, we all liked the food, which was quite wonderful (both in terms of taste and presentation); the selection, and the location.
We disliked the overuse of air conditioning, and we found that the waiter should have told us that one glass of sparkly was included rather than letting us have two. Staff was otherwise nice and helpful, though, and not overbearing.
Foie gras, ham w/ tomato bread, smoked salmon. Yum!

Tomato, duck ham & manchego cheese salad (4/10)
The duck ham went very well with the manchego, it was a nice simple salad, very Spanish tapas alike. However, the salad base was somehow rubbish; it looked like all salad use the same base.

Perhaps it was a lunch menu; in general it was rather disappointing. Not sure if I would go back for a second time. I wonder how did food critics/magazine rate fofo by el willy one of the top Spanish restaurant in Hong Kong, or they got “paid”. Uh OH.

Give me a thumb up if you like it!

Tapas:

Smoked Salmon & Truffle Honey

Garlic & Chilli Prawn, Iberico Ham Croquettes

Iberico Ham "Pluma" with Black Truffle

"Piquillos"

第二款 "Piquillos" Red Pepper stuffed with Cod Fish Mousse。
Red Sangrias

White Sangrias

Paella:
Special Seafood Paella

"Churros"

甜品是 "Churros" Spanish Crispy Fried Doughs with Warm Chocalate & Vanilla Ice-cream,像炸了的手指餅。

Other Info. Fofo by el Willy

We came here on a busy Wednesday night for our anniversary. Outside there were dozens of people waiting to get into some club in the same building. Luckily, Fofo's wasn't that crowded, but it was still busy-- reservations are recommended.

We had the special tapas menu, "A Taste of Spain," which is $438/ person + 10% service charge (min two people). I'd recommend it as you get a lot of different dishes, and it's no small amount of food. Some quick notes:

Iberico ham on toast: tasty enough ham. A little dry, but the toast had tomato paste on it. 7/10

Fois gras on toast: not the pan fried thing advertised elsewhere in the menu and seen in some pictures here. Just the cold pate. My first time eating fois gras... ok, I guess? 7/10

Lobster salad on toast: I liked it. Meaty and cool, not overly mayonnaise-y. Flavorful. Robust. 8/10

Iberico ham croquettes: This is what it says on the menu, but I'm pretty sure my croquettes had only cheese in them. No sign of ham anywhere. They were like... fancy mozzarella sticks. 7/10

Scallop ceviche: on a bed of avocado paste, topped with fried shallots. Crispy, citrusy, creamy. We loved it. 10/10

Stuffed mushroom: I thought the mushrooms themselves were well-cooked, nicely firm, and flavorful. Their stuffing was mushy and a little off-tasting. 6/10

Cuttlefish "noodles" carbonara: the "noodles" are made out of cuttlefish. The were mostly tender, but obviously not quite the texture of real noodles. The cream sauce was middling, but at least not overly bacony. What is with Hong Kongers and carbonara? 7/10

Grilled lamb loin w/ goat cheese: the lamb was utterly fantastic. Tender, cooked to perfection, excellently seasoned, and the goat cheese only helped with its tangy contrast. 10/10

Marinated beef skewers w/ hummus: I wasn't a particular fan. Apparently they're traditional? I thought they were forgettable. 6/10

King prawn juicy rice w/ artichokes, peas and mushrooms: There was only one prawn (but he was pretty big). Cooked firmer than I like my prawns typically, but there was something really right about the texture and flavor in this context. The rice was pretty forgettable, but I will say the peas were nice and firm, just like I like 'em. 8/10

Iberico pork rice with black truffle and manchego: I can't say I remember this dish all that well. There was only one truffle and my wife got it. The Iberico pork I suppose was the same as all the other Iberico stuff we had. 7/10

Dessert: churros, cake, and creme brulee: I can't say I had much room for dessert when it came. I had a little bit of all the desserts and they were all pretty decent. I think the churros were the best. 7/10

Red sangria: I thought it was more alcoholic but not as refreshing as some sangria I've had. So plusses and minuses. 8/10?

All in all, I thought the food was great. While most of the dishes didn't blow me away, having a variety of good, solid dishes is better in my mind than having something slightly better with no variety. Additionally, some of the dishes really impressed me, in particular the scallop ceviche, grilled lamb loin, and the king prawn (though I was indifferent toward the rice it came with). The view in the restaurant was great (it's on the top floor of a 20 floor building), the decor was upscale without being pretentious, the service was mostly excellent (for a while they forgot to refill our sangria, but it wasn't a particularly long time), and the "vibe" at the place was "fun." At the end of our meal the chef came out to chat; I never particularly enjoy such things, but I do appreciate the concern it shows on behalf of the customers.

My wife and I jointly decided that this was the best place we'd been to in Hong Kong so far. 9/10
