約了友人在九如坊吃飯替她慶生,可是整天在外沒時間弄生日蛋糕,所以便打算買一個現成的。在置地廣場逛了好一會,也到過文華一趟,但可能因為是平日的八時多,為時已晚,剩下蛋糕選擇不多且沒合心的。想到Ms B又關了門,本來就打算放棄。怎料途經L place,想起了友人想過吃Brunch的Mano,便走進去瞧瞧。一問之下,餐廳表示大概十分鐘便可給我準備好一個Carrot Cake($220),我便立刻買了一個。拿出來方知蛋糕比想像的大,足六至八人分享。兩層Carrot Cake配上忌廉,外頭圍了一圈合桃,上面放了些水果和脆脆片,樣子比預計的優雅漂亮。蛋糕自身濕潤綿密,各種香料跟甘筍味道平衡合拍,不用多花心思在層次組合上食味已挺討好。忌廉不是特別幼滑,但能清晰看到點點雲呢嗱籽,味道頗香。雖沒生日牌但問餐廳拿了蠟燭,一樣氣氛十足。看著吃著覺得好像少了點東西,回家看照片才知原來沒了單件裝上的小兔子,不過是不影響食味的啦!等待蛋糕時餐廳也讓我坐到Bar檯位置等候,依餅櫃看來除了Carrot Cake,餐廳還有其他口味的Whole Cake,要是大家會在L Place或附近慶祝生日,不妨考慮一下在Mano訂

Having had lunch at The L Place twice this week, I passed by Mano both times as it was located on the ground floor and felt intrigued by the casual cafe. I finally stopped by to get coffee after finishing lunch upstairs the second time. It looked like it was part coffee shop and part bistro with a pastry counter and a vast dining area. The pastries looked pretty good but too bad I was full from lunch.Once I saw that they had a Synesso expresso machine, I knew that the coffee can't be that bad!Wh

Latte ($42) - the expresso was a bit more bitter than what I'd usually prefer but it didn't bother me as much as I think it was due to the flavors of the beans more than that it was over-extracted. The milk was really nicely frothed with a velvety texture which helped to balance out the expresso. The price was on par with other cafes in this area which is rather pricey for the portion.

We were initially headed to Linguini Fini, a favorite walk-in restaurant of mine for when I have no bookings elsewhere; only to find it replaced with Mano which I later found has been there for quite some time now.

We were told the dinner menu was a new addition as it was focused on doing brunch sets on launch. Their website says their cuisine is Modern European with characteristics of the Mediterranean. I think their cuisine is just delicious.

Their predecessor used to be secretly famed for their pastries (you had to ask for their daily treats), and I think Mano did a good job with its baked goodies. The bread was crusty on the outside and stretchy on the inside – perfect for scooping up the sauce from my appetizer!

The Mano Meatballs ($108) was one of my favorites. For those who enjoy rustic down-to-earth goodness, this generously portioned classic hit all the right spots. The meatballs were meaty and had a coarse texture; while the tomato base had a good balance of acidity and sweetness.

My friend only had good things to say about the French Onion Soup ($88). The soup was rich and caramelized onions were plenitful. Despite the unconventional plating - french onion soup is typically baked in a ramekin, the baked cheese on toast was quite satisfying! (Although I would have preferred it a bit more burnt)

For the main we had the Roasted Half Organic Chicken with Salsa Verde ($208) and the Auberine Lasagna ($188). The chicken thigh was succuclent, juicy and well marinated but the salsa verde was a little heavy handed with the parsley. And oven roasted garlics are always a welcome side.
The lasagna was nicely plated, and consistent with the meatballs here, rich in tomato with a tangy kick to it and flavored with a good amount of cheese.

We were stuffed after the main course and ended up skipping dessert, opting for Peppermint Tea ($38) instead.

Service here was excellent. Staff were attentive and friendly, maybe also due to it being late (around 9pm when we started) and the limited number of tables.

Overall a pleasant experience. Good hearty portions, rustic cooking, friendly service and a relaxing atmosphere.

更令我一改西人對煮白肉的認知,切開之雞肉雖然一點肥膏也沒有
但入口質感幼嫩,外層便用上煙肉包封着烹煮、将油份香微微滲入其中
用上橄欖油加以烤焗之有枝蕃茄,咬一口果肉四散於嘴腔
將吃過肉質之飽滯感,輕輕得以平和、這個配搭又實確不錯

馬卡龍是MissJans最近很愛的一個甜點,可是我很怕吃到超甜膩,或是乾乾的那種。這個馬卡龍在質感上跟Lauduree, Pierre Hermes那種「外酥脆內軟帶韌性」不同,我會形容它為另外一種的馬卡龍。它的外皮只是微酥,帶一點點的濕潤煙韌,水準不算很高,但內陷是非常的飽滿和好吃!它的朱古力內陷比平常的奶油餡挺身一點,吃下去像松露朱古力一樣,朱古力味濃,苦甜適中,質感幼滑,在嘴巴慢慢散開後,整個嘴巴都被它侵佔,有另一番的食味。最重要是它只要$15,性比價頗高,經過時外帶一個做小甜點也不錯!

Eclair閃電泡芙是近年在香港越來越流行的甜點,連在幾間東海堂也有的賣!Mano的泡芙個子小小的,大概兩三口都可以吃完了。泡芙外層帶有一點酥酥的,焦糖奶油餡濃稠而不膩,也與表層的牛奶朱古力糖霜味道蠻配,本應是好吃的。可是泡芙的外層太厚了,餡料也不夠,吃著吃著有點像只是在吃泡芙外層,嘴巴只有牛油味。以$48的價錢來說,這份量和味道都讓人失望。

總的來說,這裡的甜點以馬卡龍最讓人驚喜,其他的則性比價不太高,也許有一部分的價錢是給了這個歐洲風的環境吧!MissJans還是比較推薦他們的Brunch呢呵呵!

餐牌只有一面,選擇不算多,分早餐,主菜,沙律和飲品四類。早餐除了有一系列的蛋料理,pancake,法式吐司和乳酪以外,還有比較少見的black pudding,價錢由$78-$118不等;主菜由三文魚,羊架,燒雞和pasta四款,大概為$118-$148;沙律在餐牌上可選一或三款,各為$40及$80;最後飲品就是果汁喝咖啡之類的,價錢約$40。既然一場來到吃brunch,又看見鄰桌的的主菜不太吸引且分量比較少,於是便點了一份egg benedict(two eggs)和炒蛋配煙三文魚兩款。
店裡除了悠閒的氛圍,店裡門口那一個盛滿各色各樣烘培品的L形櫥櫃也十分的誘人!在點餐以後,MissJans禁不住出去繞了個圈!

最先映入眼簾的當然是MissJans最愛的甜點櫃!款色大概有六七款,當天有草莓塔,法式閃電泡芙,芝士蛋糕,蘿蔔蛋糕等等,價錢大概為$48一款,另外還有朱古力馬卡龍($15)看上去每一款都像在叫我把它們統統都點下去哈哈!還有朱古力布朗尼偷偷的藏在另外櫃的一邊。好,吃完主菜立刻點,呵呵!

麵包糕點類的選擇也不少,約有八到九款,而且它們都是由麵包師傅在店裡新鮮焗起,讓客人可以吃到最佳風味的麵包。較特別的有咖啡丹麥酥,燕麥,芝士,香蕉核桃和藍莓口味的Brioche($24),反而不含牛油的歐式麵包選擇較少。我們最後點了兩款酥點試試看。

這個蛋也未免太過吸眼球了吧!它的份量比我想像中大份,每份約有一個手掌的大小。黃澄澄的荷蘭醬懶洋洋地溢在比我半熟蛋上面,叉一下,橙黃色的蛋漿立刻來個大爆發,潺潺流下,看得人食指大動!一進口,是很夢幻的味道──因為用了意大利蛋的關係,蛋味濃郁;英式鬆餅烘得剛好,外皮是薄薄的一層脆,內裡是意想不到的軟綿;荷蘭醬質感濃稠,咸甜咸甜的,卻又帶點奶味,很有層次也很夠味,配上火腿,四者是絕妙的配搭,到現在還很回味,大推薦!!!
至於旁邊的油醋沙律就只是普普,偏油膩了一點,也不太嚐得出醋的味道。值得一提的是這道菜可以選一隻蛋($68)或兩隻($98),貼心照顧了一個人來,又想多試幾款的人!

整個的配搭像open sandwich一樣,麵包因為烘過的關係邊的外脆而有嚼勁。炒蛋是高水準的滑,嫩,濃,香,還帶一點奶味,不會油膩,一放進口就溶化掉!加上H. Foreman的煙三文魚(它是來自蘇格蘭,魚質較好,偏橙色;煙薰的時候下的鹽會比較少,因而吃起來重魚香和魚油味而不是鹹味。)鹹香有致。上面的酸奶油更是畫龍點睛,為整道菜消取了油膩感呢!

Brioche在香港比較少見,它是一種歐式甜麵包,牛油和蛋的含量比一般高,所以吃下去的時候會知道一陣陣濃香的牛油味。這裡的Brioche外型像muffin,質感做得偏像蛋糕而不像麵包。雖然外層挺酥,也重牛油香,也有燕麥,乾果等增加咬口,可是內裡較乾身,質感也頗實,一切下去一顆顆麵粉碎碎一直掉下散開,失去了Brioche應有的軟腍鬆軟,也沒有muffin的濕潤感!不推。


就以上的菜式而言,Brunch菜色的質素有很高的水準,比起其他差不多價位的更值得一試,很推薦,令人有再訪再吃的念頭!!和麵包質素來說,味道是很不錯,但質感還有改善的空間。至於美侖美奐甜點呢...下回分解呵呵!

We placed our orders around 12:00PM, nothing fancy, just salad and a pasta dish, but it took them almost 40 minutes before the food arrived at our table. The same situation for other tables as we observed. Now about the food; the salad was just average, but the pasta was one of the worst we have ever tasted. The tomato sauce was soo tasteless and bland as if almost like someone just purred some low grade tomatoes and mixed with warm pasta. There was absolutely no herbs or spices whatsoever, it was flat as water. A can of V8 juice tastes better, seriously.

So in conclusion, the setting for the place is good, but the food is not, so definitely avoid if you are about satisfying your taste buds.

 中午跟公司飲茶做節時,專登食不多!留肚食甜品下午茶!


當我走到店前,見到精緻的甜品,也忍不住要幫襯一嚐!

我第一次幫襯 Mano,就由一件 Carrot Cake 開始.....
第二次幫襯,一嚐早餐的滋味!

早上,柔和的陽光從玻璃窗透入店內;下午 5:30 之後,燈光調教昏暗,每桌子上放了蠟燭,別有一番情調!

It's not too pricey at all for lunch, but for the 3 of us....eating such small portions...its not the most bang for your buck. Maybe come back for a good convo over the coffee and freshly baked goods. They are still very new...perhaps after a few more weeks...I'm sure this place will get much better!

Ethiopian Aricha coffee - made using Aeropress Method.

- I have been away from Hong Kong for almost half a year already,  but upon hearing that Rob from Protein by Dunne/Frankowski from the UK is now in town to consult for the new opening of MANO,  I was here within a few days of arriving back to HK because I seriously missed good coffees and especially from London.

- Mano is apparently opened by a Korean investor group and they will slowly ramp up their menu offerings and in the mean time,  are offering pastry items baked in house and they look decent enough.

- I understand that Rob the barista trainer will not be stationed here permanently,  but he is so knowleagable about coffees and will be training other Baristas to be capable and perfoming the job...  After talking to him a couple of times (I have visited here 3 times so far and will be back),  I really enjoyed talking to him and listening to his approach to coffee and how he can remain totally objective to his opinions about the cupping results.   For example I did hear that he does not 100% believe in the mathematically measured TDS extraction (Total Dissolved Solids) as the most accurate indication of how a coffee will end up tasting - afterall,  it is the tongue and human factor in the end which shall determine how successful the final cup becomes.  Add on top of that,  if you have tried a certain coffee bean at an elite level before,  you can instantly relate the other cups to that expectation level.  Why rely on only the maths data?

- Actually I am equally surprised that in the two Espresso or Milk Coffee Bean blends,  some washed Indian Arabica beans were thrown into the mix.  Totally not very 'connoisseur' level coffees but guess what?   There is nothing wrong with this approach to me.   On 1 hand the real coffee enthuasists believe in fruitier coffees,  but on the normal scale,  normal citizens just wants some pleasant caffeine fix with a good aroma and body!  (Even if I belong to the former group but hey,  we have all been there!   Each to their own !!)  

- I ordered an Aeropressed Yirgacheffe Aricha.  This was so aromatic and almost Geisha like wild fruity and wreaking havoc on your senses,  probably because it's Dry Processed as well.  But it was clean,  it had an apricotty sweetness note and surprinsingly a black tea like finish and tannin dryness.  It arrived being a murkier type of filtered/aeropress coffee which brought out more of it's fruitier characters.   A later visit saw this same coffee bean being extracted slightly more restrained and it finally opened up later when it cooled.   I still think the 1st cupping version was more representative of this particular coffee bean though..  It is easy enough to criticize a coffee but at the end of the day there are so many variables involved!  Personal preferences,  theories,  actual performance,  date of roasted beans,  equipment,  etc.  At the end of the day I have had one of the best coffees I have encountered in town.   It didn't quite follow up with the other cups afterwards but the purpose of this post?   Is because I don't really believe in the Baristas adjusting to suit for the customers' needs.  If you have a convincing story enough such as my 1st cup of the Yirgacheffe Aricha here,  it will impress everyone with it's performance,  even including those who already work here and shared my coffee.   We are here to lead and convince,  not to be dragged behind just because a few customers didn't know that coffees are actually fruits.  Somewhere in-between,  I think we have some sort of information gap but which I believe can be bridged if we can convey accurately..

好了終於要吃一吃pastries了。MANO的pastries選擇不少,有不同口味的croissants,danish有apricot、pear、strawberries及apple,全都是24元,聽侍應的介紹,apple danish可是有菠蘿的。另外還有muffin (例如有parmesan cheese味)、brioche及cakes。所有pastries,除了croissants之外,都是很小的一件,很輕巧。

二話不說先吃apricot danish,酥皮夠脆,但咬下去卻沒有"碎花"四散,吃到一層層的酥皮很過癮。danish沒有很油膩,面頭微甜,可能塗了一點蜜糖?另外,apricot只有中間的一顆。非常貫徹此店的小份量宗旨。

另外的一款是chocolate brioche。Brioche源於法國,比平常的麵包用了更多的蛋及牛油。MANO的brioche弄得像muffin的樣子。Brioche中有不少朱古力chunks,麵包本身較膩,應該是真的用了很多牛油,喜不喜歡則要看你愛不愛牛油了,我則覺得蠻好吃。

上月經過 the L Place已看到Linguini Fini在地下的舖位沒有了,坦白說,有點興奮的感覺。Linguini Fini一開張的時候我已去試過,那時它還未有地下的位置。當時就已經覺得Linguini Fini的價錢挺貴但不特別特別好吃,而且所有pasta都很油很油。(但水牛芝士卻是真的好吃!) 它租了地下後我又去多了一次,嘩,比第一次吃的還差,所以,它不租地下,騰空了位置,多好。現在那位置已變成MANO。MANO全日都有pastries如danish ($24)、cakes ($30)、麵包等供應,看起來都很美很美。所有都是廚師在店內的廚房即焗的。上班的日子午餐有沙律供應,不過挺貴,但配搭卻是新鮮。它有分salad及main。98元可以要數款沙律,這是small size (哈哈,small size也要98元),付出128元則可要一款main,我去看過,有三文魚,小牛扒等等,這是big size。不想外賣亦可以坐下來吃。不過,我今天是來吃brunch的。其實我很久很久沒吃brunch了,之前不知怎樣,突然覺得brunch不外乎也是benedicts或omelette,成

不過,我今天是來吃brunch的。其實我很久很久沒吃brunch了,之前不知怎樣,突然覺得brunch不外乎也是benedicts或omelette,成本好像很低但往往不便宜 (因為只由蛋及麵包等組成)。但由於MANO的pastries實在太漂亮,我真的很想來吃。之前問侍應她說週末及公眾假期有brunch供應,所以便決定和KK來了。(但今天卻沒有吃任何的pastries......搞什麼!)

餐廳的樓底很高,空間感十足。店內大部分顧客都是外國人。侍應們全都非常有禮貌,問什麼都知無不言,亦會不時問我們吃得怎樣,有沒有需要改善的地方。希望這種服務態度可以維持下去。

Brunch的選擇不少,看著感覺不貴,但我要警告大家,所有東西的份量都很少!所以會有很貴的感覺。但由於太好吃的緣故,我不在乎份量太少!

千選萬選,我們首先要了沙律。嗯嗯,80元選3種沙律作配搭。我們要了的是Roasted butternut squashCaprese SaladChar-grilledbrocooli。看這份量!我們看了有點不知所措 lol。這個,我不建議大家點。但說回味道吧,西蘭花有調味但不太咸,好吃。butternut squash是新鮮的焗起,不用下什麼配料已很好吃。caprese salad水準不錯,我想如果80元然後3款沙律都選caprese salad的話可能還不錯,會抵一點。

第二道的可真的是brunch的菜色了。這個是Welsh rarebit on sourdough,被形容為"poached egg, wilted chard with Lemon" ($88),是一款英國菜。本來KK想點benedict的,因為可以要半份,但我想試一些特別及別家沒有的,而且這個亦有poached egg,所以便點了它。(反正benedict好像任何地方都吃到)。盛著的小碗很可愛。

急不及待便往碗內切,流心蛋湧了出來。蛋上的是以chard芝士煮成的汁,蛋下是菠菜,最底是sourdough toast。醬汁有頗重的芝士味,拌起蛋和蛋黃是非常好吃。sourdough toast被菠菜及蛋壓著,再加上蛋汁及芝士汁,並不脆,但不表示不好吃!蛋、菠菜與toast三層一起吃,toast吸收了所有醬汁的精華,是極品!

因為自己在家不會弄pancake,所以就點了Pancakes Assiette (78)。嘩嘩嘩!沒有見過這麼美的pancake!這是一大塊的pancake,上面放滿了不同的berries,再淋上maple syrup。maple syrup應該是加了一點別的東西煮熱才淋於pancake上。所以較水汪汪,也不會過甜,很用心的做法!

Pancakes切下去裡面很滑,而且還很熱!有重重的蛋味。真的很想知道如何弄這麼一大塊pancake卻能做到全件pancake都熟及熱但不會過乾也沒有焦!

我最後要了一杯Cappuccino ($38),當然,一貫此店的風格,是比較貴而份量少但好食/喝。以後早餐可以來一杯了!

不瞞大家,這一餐真的吃得我非常興奮久久未能平伏。雖然貴而量少,但卻真的吃得出是有用心去設計菜色然後再執行出來。你看那pancake便知道。不得不說,我沈寂一時吃brunch的欲望又被挑了起來。
