The first course is either soup or salad, and I love the fact that there are a few soups and salads to choose from. I opted for the vegetable gazpacho, a tomato based soup served chilled, which was very refreshing. 

For the main course I had the Angus beef burger with cheese and 63 degree organic egg. It was served with fries (huge serving too!). The egg came in a separate small plate so I put it inside the burger myself - although half of the runny egg ended up on the plate. I usually find burgers either too oily or too dry - but this one was different - the cheese was subtle, the meat patty was cooked just right and the runny egg formed a nice "sauce". Overall a great burger! 

It was sunny but not too hot so we sat at the outdoor area. The light breeze and the sea view made it so relaxing. Towards the end somebody started smoking cigar at the table next to us, otherwise we would have stayed longer.

I get very excited every time when I have a Spanish meal. I’ve been to a few Spanish restaurants after I came back to Hong Kong, and Solera in Discovery Bay is the one that I would really want to recommend to someone. I called to book a table a few weeks ahead before my first visit because it was a special occasion; I also requested for a table that was facing Disneyland so that we could watch the fireworks half way through dinner. The staff reminded me that the table would be very close to the band (yes they have a live band on Friday and Saturday nights) and it could be noisy. I said it was fine and turned out that the music was actually quite loud and the fireworks were pretty far away.
So consider if you really wanted to watch the fireworks that much, otherwise a table further away from the band (and the bar too) would be quieter.

The Tortilla was served with a creamy brava sauce. We kept on guessing what ingredients there were in the sauce and how nice it was. It tasted like aioli with paprika and it’s very addictive!

This was the reason I revisited Solera: 72 h slow cooked pork belly with quince and potato cream. I occasionally (and randomly) recall the taste of the nice food I had when I am working in the office, and once the subtle fragrance of the orange zest and the pork would just pop up. The pieces of pork belly weren’t marinated but the flavour was entirely enhanced by the hint of coarse salt and the quince puree.

The dishes at Solera are at a fairly reasonable price. I’d also tried their Sangria and Paella before but I’d suggest ordering Paella only when you are with a group of people, or else you won’t have room for the delicious tapas. It costed us around HK$340 for 4 dishes, and we got a free ferry ride back to Central for spending more than $120 at a designated restaurant so we’ve saved $40 per person there. It’s a great place for dinner after an outing day at Discovery Bay or if there’s a special occasion.

食到6點就搭船出去啦,啱啱 missed 咗班船, 不過都唔趕的,每半小時一班船。

The restaurant was quite dark and cozy, with not much clutter in the decor. The wine list was substantial, and there were even three variations of sangria, namely white wine, red wine and watermelon. Although paella was such a stable for a Spanish meal, we decided to try out more tapas instead. We chose fried cod fish ball with garlic lemon sauce, jamon Iberico cold cut platter with tomato toast, grilled sardine, sautéed spinach with pine nuts and raisins, Tortilla de Patata (Spanish Omelette) with homemade sauce and gazpacho. It was so dark that the food all looked gloomily red. White wine sangria was refreshing but without the tartness of red wine. The watermelon sangria was quite strange and the watermelon cubes soaked in there tasted odd and too sweet. Probably not supposed to be eaten? The fried cod fish ball was real salty though the garlic lemon sauce was very nice. Jamon Iberico cold cut platter was so-so, same as those available in cold meat store in a pack. The grilled sardine was not to my liking as the belly was bitter. Probably the viscera had not been removed. We liked the gazpacho with the refreshing tomato taste, a little breadcrumbs and a drizzle of olive oil. Tortilla de patata was commended by the other reviewers for authenticity. I also happened to see it looked quite alike with those sold in La Boqueria as seen on TV. The potato blended in well with the fried egg to give a wholesome taste. It would be lovely to eat as breakfast also. The in-house sauce to go with it was pungent with raw garlic. Sautéed spinach with pine nuts and raisins was the latest to arrive. The ingredient combination was quite funny to me.

Overall, the food was real salty so as to go with wine, and we were left extremely thirsty the entire night after the meal. I appreciate the relaxing ambience and this place was definitely worth recommending for a good date.

講真,這裡的海鮮炒飯確很昂貴,海鮮卻很少,幸好味道真不俗,和我想像的粒粒飯都吸收海鮮及香料的精華,而且粒粒煙韌爽口,不油不膩,實在很好,只是偏咸了一點,兩人吃的話,份量足夠有餘!

I guess this tells me that this is a popular restaurant at Discovery Bay and if you are going to visit on a weekend, it is probably best to book a table.

This is probably my 4th visit to this restaurant. The fact I am returning to this restaurant is definitely a good sign. Solera has also been voted Best Restaurant in Lantau.

We went for Tapas this time and we choose the following:
1. Spanish Egg and potato omelette ( Tortilla de Patata)
This is actually my personal favourite. it is a simple dish, and perhaps if you are not familiar with this homely spanish dish, you may not even order it, as potato omelette may sound just too plain. However, I would advise you to try this dish, as this is a dish which my Spanish Ex-colleague used to bring from home on the time. She told me that this is a staple food for her family just like how Chinese families often have rice as a staple food.
The Solera 's version of the Tortilla Patata definitely scores well with the home made ones I used to have from my Spanish friend. The egg in the omelette has just the right fluffiness to contrast with the testure of the potato pieces. The pink sauce that comes with the dish, gives it just the right flavour to this homely dish.
2. Scallop ceviche
I have a special liking for raw food, from Japanese Sashimi, the Italian Carppaccio to the South American ceviche. This ceviche dish is a little fusion with foam, and salmon roe in it. The important thing is to eat all these different parts together to give you a special flavour of citrus and fresh seafood. The scallop was fresh and sweet. My friend enjoyed the dish so much , that she  ordered seconds.
3. Pork Belly
Four pieces of pork belly is served for this Tapas dish. The pork belly is so well made that it literally melts in your mouth and the meat is very tender. I don't normally eat pork belly because of its fattiness but this one is an exception as you really cant't taste the fattiness at all. All you get is a rich taste, enhanced by the slightly sweet sauce. Remember to eat this dish whilst it is still warm.
4. Home made orange chocolate truffles.
Again a great dish that we have to order seconds. Truffles melt in your mouth with just the right mix of better sweet from the dark chocolate and the complementing orange jam like topping.
Service is mediocre. I hope the management of the restaurant can read this review and improve thier service quality. Also it needs to be recognised , whilst not being discriminatory, just because a waitress is Filipino, she may not speak or understand English very well.  If English is the job requirement, please assess the person's language and do not assume language proficiency by race.

如果油條上不是佈滿砂糖, 會更能嚐到朱古力&雲哩拿的香味, 會更好吃.

食物小評:

Tapas類只是$40至70多元左右,比中環市區平,雖然驚喜不足,但水準一點也不遜色,全都有板有眼。

個人最愛炸魷魚,香脆得來又沒有硬或雪冰冰的感覺,而蒜蓉蝦的油也調得恰當,蝦肉很爽滑。

主菜方面,燒乳豬是水準之上,據大廚說,選用越南豬,勝在豬肉有充足油脂,吃起來份外滑而且腍。兩道炒飯之中,我會揀墨汁海鮮炒飯,飯的汁液濕潤且濃香,偏咸但不過份。

溫馨提示: 愉景灣往返中環的渡輪,每半小時一班,在這裡吃飯便要看錶做人,我們預備乘9時半船,便要在大約9點25分前到碼頭,否則便要等多30分鐘了。而船程大約25分鐘左右,不算很遠,但船費要$37一程。如果想暫時遠離一下華語社會,可以考慮在週末去愉景灣走一趙,也未嘗不是一件快樂事。

值得一提﹐侍應的服務態度很好。由於當天天氣炎熱﹐加上餐廳的冷氣好像有點問題﹐當我告訴侍應很炎熱的時候﹐他就將餐廳的風扇放到我前面給我吹涼﹐好像私人冷氣一樣。


我會再來光顧的﹐看見其他食家的食評這裡的tapas也不錯。

I arrived with my friends around 7pm that night, when the beautiful sunset was taking place. To enjoy a good city weekend, sight-seeing is not enough, it must be with some yummy-candy. Solera, just facing to the ferry pier, was where our stomach and mind would be feed.

The restaurant is spacious in the lieu of beautiful harbor view, and facing to the Lantau Island, there is a free firework show given from Disneyland.

The decoration is quite classic in dark wooden and red. Casual dining and bar, which is served with a crew of experienced Hongkong staff and foreign supervisors. Upon our arrival, the Sunday's bar seats are almost fully occupied. People there, are more relaxing and in a chatting mood than treating their Sunday dinner seriously.

Apart from fruity-sweet non-cocktails such as Fruit Punch and Lychee Cooler, Red/White/Rose Sangria is a must-try drink for its slightly strong flavor of wine which satisfied me and my friends. Besides, I would also recommend a glass of Spanish beer, which was similar to Japanese brew. It tasted light and fresh and was perfect for summer night.

Creamed Salt Cod (bacalao) Spring Rolls $38 for 2pcs

Go for a Spanish night, I would give up the normal bread basket and turn to bread-tapas, which was topped with fresh-made tomato spread. Spring Roll was impressive by the warm and creamy fillings in a lighter but fish-featured aroma, and the layers of spring roll skin was just overlapped to a right thickness to stay crispy, existing-in-mouth and still thin.

Jamon Iberico (servied with tomato bread) $270 for 100g / $145 for 50g

The greasy looking of red cold-cute was served with Julian martin Jamon from Guijuelo, Salamanca. It was moisture and oily in an impressive dried salty taste.

Asparagus grilled with garlic, rosemary and lemon $68

The mushrooms were quite good in its juicy taste, even I didn't recognize too much Sherry. Well, personally I liked asparagus more. It was well placed and just a little over-grilled to make some parts darker and softer. The smashed garlic is almost melted on the surface of asparagus while inside it still contained the vege-sweetness.

Creamy croquettes of Iberico Ham served with romescu sauce $58 for 4pcs

I have had good croquettes in Barcelona, and in Hong Kong (Read more about Zafran) and each time the experience is different. So did Solera, which offered the deeper-longer fried croquettes. The fried skin was very thin so that one bite can hit the creamy fillings, which gave a heavy ham taste as I were taking a piece of dried ham.

Prawn sauteed in garlic and chili scented oil $92

I was a little scared by the grilled big-sliced garlic on the top of prawn, but actually it just strengthened the overall taste without taking out the original seafood freshness. The special chili scented oil was the best partner of garlic to bring out more attractive scent.

Grilled Squid with a fresh herb and EVOO sauce $68

It was one of the most eye-catching dishes that night and probably the most exotic one in its sharp green looking. The big-cut squid was grilled in a lighter way so that it didn't lose its juicy and soft texture. To overlook the colorful presentation, the dish tasted quite similar to a raw squid dish by its all-around-juice and fresh sweetness from the sea.

Deep fried squid Andalucian style with smoked paprika allioli $75

Seriously fried into each piece, another squid dish is totally on the opposite to the previous one. The surface was covered with spices and fried powder loosely, and made an adverse taste compared to the tender squid.

Octopus Galician style with potato, pimento powder and olive oil $190 for 200g / $95 for 100g

Continue seafoods, and this time came to the big brother of squid, octopus. It was cooked with pimento powder to give an extra spicy flavor. Different from the chili scented oil used in previous dish, the powder gave a deeper stronger taste without making too much sauce. The flavorful sauce was thicker and acted as a kind of paste on the fresh chewy octopus. And I even could not let those super soft potato go.

Slow cooked Angus beef cheek in sweet and red wine with gooseberry chutney $118 for 4pcs

After the rich seafood dishes, finally we came to land-meat; the first one is Angus beef cheek, cooked in a traditional wine-flavored way which is also popular in French Cuisine. The red wine was perfectly marinated the tenderness and taste of the cheek, plus the slow-cook handing, made the whole dish mouth-melting.

Roasted suckling pig Segovia style, quince allioli and roasted apple $238 per serve / $460 for half / $900 for whole

Suckling pig is always on the list of Spanish dinner, and this one was less in pig aroma, more in fruity sweet. Overall it was made quite well with a crispy and glutinous skin, soft and slightly sweet pig meat. To be specially mentioned, would be the roasted apple which was giving out sweet-sour juice when it was sent into my mouth.

Black ink paella with seafood $268

The paella is absolutely the must-try items from Solera. The authentic flavor was wooed us a lot, especially by the black and green paella. Our teeth were traveling from chewy and firmer Spanish rice to softer and creamier one. Even the difference of sauce differed the taste of seafood paella, which was clearer and lighter of Black Ink Paella, but cheesier and heavier of traditional Seafood Paella.

Coming to the last dessert chapter, we were served with a group of choco-sweets, except the first Crema Catalana, which performed quite similar to creme brulee. The chocolate in main, tasted sweeter but not milky. I would not say the chocolate nor ice cream were Solera's strength, and I was disappointed with the hot chocolate dips for churros, which was weak and thin. I was quite ok with Coulant de Chocolate, which was not melting but mouth-watering by its warm chocolate cake. The Truffles, were a little different with a denser and wet texture and it had the bitterest coco-taste.

全晚最喜歡便是這個墨汁飯,帶著濃烈的墨汁味,飯汁煙韌,呈al dente,看上去也許只有蝦和墨魚,但相信已用上了很多海鮮來做上湯,實在太鮮,大家都已很飽之下,我毫不客氣地打包走了一盒飯。這份墨汁飯,除了美味外,價錢上亦很划算,這樣大份才二百多元,換著在其他店,這樣的質素,應該要$400up吧。(Must-Try)

海鮮飯相對上來說則不及墨汁飯吸引,味道上沒那樣苦層次之餘,飯粒亦比較濕,這兩個做法應該是一樣的,但可能這個焗的時間相對上比較短,所以比較濕。不過,味道上也是鮮的。

來到這裡,怎能不吃suckling pig呢? 這裡的suckling pig沒有用上太多香料來增添香氣,但這樣能夠清楚地品嚐那豬豬的味道;豬味頗濃郁的,肉質亦嫩,而豬皮亦香脆;沒有用上太多的花巧方式來烹調這豬,吃到了最原始的味道。

到最後便到甜點;其實churros在西班牙是早餐來的,但漸漸的也成為了甜點;而這裡的churros,外層做得不錯,但內裡比較濕,亦有點腍;朱古力醬也算不錯,不是朱古力漿。

Crema Catalana $40

另一道則是Crema Catalana,蛋香是有的,但texture不夠幼滑,不過$40有這樣大的Crema Catalana ,還可以接受吧。

遠道而來,幸好這裡的食物質素不錯,每道菜都做得有板有眼;而這裡的大廚,原來就是從Fandango來的,而跟這位大廚的二廚亦到了另一間西班牙餐廳,難怪上次到Fandango的經驗這樣差;而這裡食物價錢相比其他西班牙餐廳是便宜的,大約20-30%吧,所以不怕遠,進來吃個晚餐是不錯的,而且只要惠顧滿$120,便送一張回程到中環的船飛,如此類推,$240便兩張、$360便三張,頗值得的。
