My wife and I ate at Thai King the other night. Here's what we got:
Papaya salad, pad thai, yellow curry, beers.
The papaya salad: I liked it. It was spicy, and citrusy, and crunchy and refreshing. It was my first papaya salad and my wife assures me that there are better ones, so I'll give it 7/10
Pad thai: My impression is that pad thai is traditionally made with a thick, flat rice noodle (a quick google images search seems to validate the intuition) but most places I've seen in HK make it with a thinner round noodle. The dish was a little bit crunchy from frying (a good thing) but also on the greasy side. The shrimp and tofu in it were both terrible. Shrimp: bland and undercooked. Tofu: dry and bland and shriveled. 4/10
The yellow curry: a very rich curry with chicken, bell peppers, onion, and potato. The vegetables were undercooked and didn't seem as though they'd really been "married" with the curry sauce. I sort of liked the crunchy freshness this added, but my wife didn't. 6/10.
I won't recommend against this restaurant, it's perfectly decent food. In fact, we were sitting right next to the grill, and by the end I wish I had ordered some grilled squid. Still, I probably won't be dining here regularly, not with Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine so close to my house. Final score: 6/10
