sobert ice - rough & not smooth at all
Main courses:
Fish - overcooked, not smooth

duck - part of it salty & part of it no taste, the surface of it is stiff and inside texture is ok.
Desserts:
Blueberry cheesecake's texture likes rubber ~~~
Chocolate cake with icecream - the most normal one.
Sicks after the dinner..

First off, I have to give special mention to Joseph, who handled my ever-changing booking requests (due to a large party) with efficiency and a smile. It left a very favorable impression even before stepping into the restaurant, where we were greeted warmly and shown into their large private room which comfortably seats 12 people. First off, I have to give special mention to Joseph, who handled my ever-changing booking requests (due to a large party) with efficiency and a smile. It left a very favorable impression even before stepping into the restaurant, where we were greeted warmly and shown into their large private room which comfortably seats 12 people.

To start, we ordered a bottle of pinot noir (lovely, for a very well-priced $480) and zinfandel (I didn't try it, but the table liked it). Someone noted that for a French restaurant, there was only 1 bottle of French wine on the wine list, to which I pointed out that most people would probably take advantage of the no corkage fee to BYOB.

Bread basket wasn't great - very ordinary dinner rolls and lacklustre slices of baguette - and didn't really do justice to the lovely pate and herb butter that was served.

The food menu is similar enough to Le Marron (my go-to casual French private kitchen), which left room for comparison. The menu is divided into appetizers, soups, mains, and desserts...lots of choice, so between 7 of us, we had a decent sampling of everything. Here's a summary of what we thought:

- A real shame we had to return the order of mussels steamed in white wine...I'm sure they would've been yummy. The mussels smelled like they'd gone off...not so fresh shellfish = very dangerous...c'mon people!

- My French friend really enjoyed his starter of a generous round of Camembert in a fondue pot for 1, with a lovely little selection of fruit. Simple and delicious.

- My starter of Escargot de Baroque (snails w/ garlic butter & potato puree) was good, but not spectacular.

- The Crab Bisque had really good crab flavor...a bit thinner for a bisque than I'd like, but it's a personal preference. I did like the fact that it wasn't weighed down by too much cream, and the others who ordered it agreed.

- As a palate refresher before the mains arrived, we were served homemade berry sorbet, but it was more like a berry granito than a sorbet because of its grainy texture. Also, it wasn't quite the right flavor to "refresh"...something a bit tangier would've worked better.

- I love Confit de Canard- my favorite is the one served at Chez Patrick - and rarely pass on a chance to order it in restaurants. La Maison's version is a decent one...not the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst by far. Despite being slightly dry at the edges, which is my #1 dread when ordering this dish, I didn't mind it so much as 95% of the duck leg was cooked perfectly...moist juicy flesh with a crispy skin. The cabbage salad was a nice complement as well. I do wish they'd drizzled a bit more sauce on the plate as whatever it was (berries again maybe?) worked well with the duck and cabbage.

- Undercooked whole baby potatoes that were served as a side to a few main dishes.

- Banana Creme Brulee is a nice idea, but while sufficiently banana-y, it was a bit too sweet. Could've used a hint of vanilla as well to balance it out.

- French Fudge Chocolate Cake is basically a molten chocolate cake...way too sweet, and the cake had already collapsed - with chocolate insides spilling all over - in the short walk from oven to table. Poor execution.

To cap it all off, while I'm generally a big fan of simplicity and wasn't really expecting anything overly imaginative from La Maison's menu, it is ever so important to make sure that food is seasoned and cooked properly. Sounds simple enough, but unfortunately these were probably two of La Maison's biggest failings last night food-wise. I'd return if only to give them a second shot at redeeming themselves...perhaps it was an off night?

My best buddy and I have a tradition of trying out new restaurant each time we meet. We would take turn to arrange for dinner. This time she proudly told me she would have a nice surprise for me. My best buddy and I have a tradition of trying out new restaurant each time we meet. We would take turn to arrange for dinner. This time she proudly told me she would have a nice surprise for me. We shall see...

She knows I'm lazy to travel, so she picked this French restaurant in my neighbourhood. The decor gives a warm and homey feel, the seats are roomy enough. I felt very comfortable.

My buddy has been here once, so she recommended we share the "Signature Dinner" and try other dishes. As she is a big fan of seafood, so the "other dishes" are seafood platter, half dozen oyster and deep fried frog leg!


And the Signature Dinner includes Foie Gras, Crab Bisque, Confit (Duck Leg) and Cherry Claufoutis (YUM YUM)

Seafood platter consists of 麵包蟹 (according to our waiter, it's called Edible crab), whelk, clams and a good amount of shrimp. They all very fresh, but Edible crab was our favorite, there is so much yolk and it goes very well with the 3 kinds of homemade sauce that comes with the dish.

The oysters are freshly arrived from France. It was good, it's just a bit too salty for my personal taste.

Foie Gras was served with some mixed berry and just a splash of sauce. It was a great match - the foie gras tasted so good, I really didn't want to share with my buddy


Frog leg was lightly-battered and the pesto based sauce give the dish a nice touch.

Crab bisque was good.

Confit (duck leg) was excellent! The duck leg lay on top of a bed of "red cabbage", the skin was thin and crispy, yet the meat remained very juicy and tender. We cleaned the plate.

Before dessert was served, the live band started playing jazz, and later on a lady came on and sang some classics. My buddy knows I love live music, this is truly a surprising addition to our wonderful girls night out!
(The waiter told us they will have live music every Tuesday night, and the band plays a mix of jazz and modern classics.)

Just when I thought I don't have any room left for dessert, the waiter brought out Cherry Claufoutis (hot dish).... Whao, it smells like freshly baked cake just coming out of the oven... we are chowing again


One thing worths mentioning - there is no corkage fees. Of course we took advantage of that and brought our own wine.

All in all, it was an enjoyable night - good company, good food, good music.

I would come back to try other dishes

早幾日同朋友想搵個好地方傾嘢順道食餐好嘅...睇介紹覺得呢間法國菜唔錯...所以即管嚟試吓。麵包配合自家製嘅特色牛油...真係唔錯...食吓一個...食吓一個...差啲就咁就食飽咗...哈~朋友點嘅磨菇湯...香、濃...飲到最後一啖都仲係一樣溫熱、好味...驚喜!比起我點嘅洋蔥湯出色。主菜...朋友點嘅安格斯牛...好味,口感相當唔錯,但略嫌肉汁不足。我點嘅羊扒比較好,香但唔太羶。甜品...紅酒燴梨...清甜...好味...必食!!

。五成熟既羊鞍,理應食得出澳洲羊既鮮味…但令人失望…唔好講羶味、連羊肉味都無,令人質疑此羊既出處同新鮮度… 再講個汁…既無紅酒味,亦無大蒜味…
可以講除了個presentation外,最值得欣賞既只係其份量,因有三舊均等size既羊鞍。

澳洲肉眼扒:Once again 成份主菜既presentation 好吸引人… 但味道、質素比羊鞍更惡劣… 肉眼扒淡而無味、well done同多根、柴皮… 友人不禁講:「我寧可多比$30去lx bons食囉…」

總括而言:可能係lunch hour 忙,餐廳未能做到去問每個客人份扒要幾成熟,又或是我孤陋寡聞,唔主動問客人食幾成熟先係正宗既法國私房菜~~
但如果你唔可以接受五成熟羊鞍或well done牛扒,請早揚聲。餐廳食物質素唔提升的話,只怕單靠貼心服務、雅致裝潢、免收加一 同nice presentation,未能長撐落去!
順帶一提,呢度既餐包最令我滿意。

餐廳很體貼安排工作人員在樓下接持,不會找不到位置。一早到還未滿座,坐下的感覺良好,地方不大但裝飾別緻。可惜當坐滿人,大家一同說話時,實在太吵耳了,這裡不是一個談心的地方。食物方面,落單要西冷扒。可能因為太吵的關係,溝通出現問題,大家都要側住頭聽對方說話,來回數次才聽清楚。故此工作人員並無提及西冷扒要多成熟。結果來了個全熟的,實在難以下嚥,多根,乾柴,相信就算七成熟都不會好食。不過賣相相當美觀,可以参照其他食評的相片。咖啡味道香濃,不過一貫不能同茶餐廳的"熱"咖啡相比,要快飲,否則很快變室溫咖啡。

去食之前係OPEN RICE SEARCH左幾間法國餐廳.諗住見依度的房菜, 試下好無味, 所以就兩日前BOOK左位,星期日最早晚餐時段- 6:30PM.我同表姐兩個早左5分鐘到, 不過入面已經有兩圍台坐緊..每人最低消費340 HKD,其實就係成張MENU 由前菜,餐湯, 主菜,甜品,, 計計埋埋每樣點一樣就OK夠數..我地前菜叫左個SALMONE TARTAR同 蝸牛兩個齊齊叫左FRENCH ONION SOUP- 飲完都已經好飽.. D芝士好CHEESY =P之後上主菜前, 又會俾個FREE SORBET俾我地. REFRESH下個咀.. (不過食完個咀D牙黑晒. 哈哈)主菜分別叫左RIB EYE同埋DUCK LEG- DUCK LEG係咸D既.但係佢有好多APPLE俾我地送黎食, 好味道!個扒擺得好靚!! 下次去食DINNER實要叫多個APPETIZER或者DESSERT XDD

Appetizer:
- Escargot (蝸牛+ Potato)
焗蝸牛用了很多香草去調味, 非常可口! 最好食的是焗薯蓉, 很香脆!
- Salad
Salad 有我喜歡的 Olive 和小蕃茄, 如果 tuna 多 d 會更好!

- Mussels
Cremy sauce 加 mussel, 好好食呀!
- Goose Liver with Peach
鵝肝屬比較少片, 很鮮味!
- Deep Fried Frog Leg
有驚喜! 上菜時以為是 KFC fried chicker wing!
炸得剛好, 連同香草汁入口的感覺, 好正呀!
- Oyster
我自己不是特別愛好蠔, 但朋友們狂叫要試, 咪陪下大家囉! 蠔是很鮮味的, 但我們只叫了半打, 要留肚食甜品呀!
見到隔鄰枱有叫 seafood platter, 下次再來一定要叫!

Soup:
- French Onion Soup
- Crab Bisque
Crab soup 很濃味, 自己很滿意. 但大家更愛 onion soup! 表面焗了 cheese, 很香味,湯內有塊焗了的麵包, 飲得好舒服


另外麵包有幾款醬, 食我自己很喜歡香草醬!

Sorbet:
sorbet 如果是粉末式會更好!

Main dishes:
- Duck leg with green apple salad
- Grilled rack of Lamb with parsley and garlic crust
鴨腿不錯, 但羊架如果再熟一點會更好.

Desserts:
- Creme brulee
- French fudge chocolate cake (心太軟)
- Apple Crumble topped with vanilla ice cream
- Pear poached with red wine and orange
- New York cheesecake with blueberry sauce
甜品時間! 個人以 Pear 為首選. 集體推介是心太軟, 朱古力味濃, 配紅酒一齊, 感覺超正 !

我叫o左個西冷,medium果然係medium,o岩o岩鎖好肉汁~ 好食~

食物:
當晚大伙點了蝸牛﹐燒春雞﹐羊扒﹐parma ham with melon, salad of nicoise, foie gras, mixed seafood platter, French onion soup, mushroom soup, rib eye, sea bass, potato gratin, spinach…點了餐牌上大部份的食物﹐對以下食物印象比較深刻:
Mixed seafood platter - 新鮮。海鮮生吃最重要的就是freshness。這點做的很好。鮮味十足。
French onion soup - 味濃而不過鹹。Cheese 也很香。讚。
燒春雞 - 非。常。好。吃。肉有咬口而嫩滑。
其他的食物其實也好吃﹐可是沒有這幾樣的印象來得深厚。
Desserts:
We ordered basically everything on the dessert menu to share amongst all of us (apart from the cheese platter since we are not too fond of cheeses)

Dark Cherry Clafoutis (hot dish) - 個人favourite! 香而不過甜。有少少似 Souffle 但比較濃味。很有個性的一道甜品

Pear poached with red wine and orange - Uncle 力讚 pear 煮得很入味卻不 mushy, 還是很爽口。
Blueberry cheesecake - 很喜歡這個餅底。
到了最後﹐Joseph 還給了我們這檯 diners 一個驚喜﹐就此謝過!
Overall - 我一定會再到訪。食物質數好﹐沒有corkage, 沒有切餅費﹐沒有加一 – it’s a bargain for value。

Every once in a while, private dining is nice. Something different from the mainstream, more likely to be a residential address and therefore akin to visiting a friend for dinner. Private dining is really a hit and miss. There are some really good ones and then there have been awful reviews on some. Private dining is really a hit and miss. There are some really good ones and then there have been awful reviews on some. So you have to want to do it in a forgiving mood and accept it for what it is - passionate people who want to share the fruits of their labour with anyone from the public who's willing to give them a chance.

La Maison was a little bigger than I expected. However, you still need a pretty good GPS to get there on account that Swatow Street is not signed at the Queen's Road East end, which is where the restaurant is nearer to, and that it does not have a street-level presence. The dim lighting added to the French country feel but would be a bitch for photos.

The food was between a good to an ok. The 3 starters we ordered to pick at definitely gave us high expectations.

The pan-fried foie gras with peach was crispy on the outside but a little too runny on the inside. While I like the insides creamy, runny was a tad much. But taste wise, the canned peach and balsamic did a competent job to cut through the richness of the liver.

Escargot de baroque (Snail with Garlic Butter & Potato Puree) was yummy with the garlic fragrant but not overpowering, a nice balance with the herbs. The molluscs were suitably firm but easy to work through and absorbed the flavors well. What was most impressive, surprisingly, was the bed of mash the snails sat on. Smooth but not losing potato flavor, one would do well to have a mouthful of the slug and puree together.

The fresh mussels steamed in white wine sauce used the tinier mussels from France and therefore more akin to oysters. We made sure to ask before we order since we all didn't like the fatter NZ variety which are too meaty and lose the slightly springier texture of these lil ones. The stock was not creamy nor garlicky as with most places but of the herbier chicken stock variety. Makes it lighter and easy to lap up although just a tad salty.

Where soups are concerned, the french onion soup beat the crab bisque hands down. Even then, unless you must have soup, you may be better off with more appetizers to share since they seem to better excel in that department. Soups were overall thin and weak. The french onion soup won only because it had the gratinated Gruyere on a slice of french bread. (Note: breads were were pretty low quality - the airy kind. So a waste of the yummy herb butter and pate they serve them with).

For main courses, the grilled Angus Rib Eye with truffle and black olive sauce was an "ok". The taste was decent but the meat was a little tough for me. But overall, the ladies enjoyed it enough to finish a pretty sizable portion.

My main of the Confit de Canard (duck leg with green apple salad) was enjoyable. It wasn't the best I've had since the skin wasn't crispy as I usually like it and the green apple salad wasn't enough to neutralize the salt content of the cured duck. Might have been better with a Pinot Noir.

Desserts were certainly competent although the dark cherry clafoutis was the most outstanding. Akin to a dark cherry souffle, this traditional French dessert is a little heavier than a souffle and in my opinion, yummier in texture and eggier in fragrance. And because you cannot get it at most places, the better it was.

The french fudge chocolate cake was pretty good too but because it's been done to death, the chocolate alone wasn't enough to divert our attention from the clafoutis. The apple crumble was "blah" at best and I have to say, crumble is best done by the English - let's just fuel the Anglo French rivalry once more!

Overall, an enjoyable dinner and at very reasonable prices. No service charge too, mind you. Our friendly and patient host was great and so you know, there will be new items on the menu soon.
