Finished having lunch at IFC and was looking for a light dessert to finish off a great meal... however, that is not what I got when I came to Petite Amanda. The display was beautifully decorated with tempting cakes, all of which seemed delicious at first glance. We decided on the Caraibe and the Mini Christmas log. Service was quick and pleasant so we were on our way in a matter of seconds.
Being in the festive Christmas season, we were feeling nostalgic for Christmas logs and decided to try Amanda's mini log. Not noticing the ingredients under the tag in our excitement, we quickly took it home... Taking a bite, we were surprised to find a bland berry flavor underneath the dry sponge which reminded us of days old cake. Upon chewing, we came across an odd plastic-like texture... SEEDS. Many seeds... This may be partly expectation biased but needless to say, quality did not match price at all. (you'd be better off going to Mandarin for this price or Maxims for this quality)
Eating the Caraibe was one of my most unpleasant food experiences. The dry cake fell apart as I dug my fork in and I tasted no green tea flavor in the sponge. What's more, the banana jelly on top felt like wax and destroyed any other flavors in my mouth with its sour after-taste. The fruity concept may have been a good idea in a "Caribbean" cake, but the execution and ingredients do not mix at all. The chocolate "mousse" on the bottom was dense, unfluffy and tasteless. I thoroughly enjoyed the paper logo in the center of my edible cake. Picking out what I expected to be chocolate from the sticky jelly really was the highlight. I choked down two bites, hoping to find a redeeming quality, but could not and disposed of it. Perhaps my expectations were just too high, but I will certainly not be going back again.
