They had a display of Hitachino Nest Beer. A Japanese beer my boyfriend was pretty excited about because it was his favorite Japanese beer. From their drink list, they seemed to have a pretty decent variety of them (including a cute little ginger beer that had a drawing of a reindeer).

On the wall near the washroom was a Hall of Bravery. This is for those that want to attempt their level 30 spiciness, they will take a photo of you and place it here. You don't have to finish the bowl. Just attempt it and you get your 15 minutes of fame.

Lunch menu was simple enough. You choose how spicy you wanted it, what soup base you want and then the meat. All curry come with vegetables, half an egg and rice. Add money for udon or ramen (which wasn't available when I was there).

Rice came in on a plate and was flattened. Portion size of the rice was extremely small. This was ok for me as I don't eat much rice, but not ok for boyfriend. But not to worry for those that can eat a whole rice cooker full of rice, rice refills are free.

Marathon Chicken ($88). I chose Marathon Chicken which was one chicken drumstick. My soup base was prawn and as I am a wuss in the spice department, I chose level 1. Yes, I'm a baby bear.
The chicken was moist and tender. Just fell off the bone. There was a generous portion of mixed vegetables that included lotus root, okra, carrot, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower and aspargus. Half a hardboiled egg was also given to you. The curry soup was thin like a broth and very sweet and strong with prawn. I liked it. Level 1 was still bit spicy for me. Yeah ... I'm a wuss.

Hungry Bear ($128). Boyfriend ordered Hungry Bear cos well....he's hungry. Along with the vegetables and egg as I had, it had a Japanese hamburger patty and a choice of chicken drumstick or pork. Boyfriend chose chicken as well. His soup base was coconut and level of spicy 10. I tasted a bit of his hamburger patty and it was ok. Not amazing. His curry was rich in coconut and was much thicker. Almost like a paste. Level 10 was also pretty spicy and I coughed and wheezed like a wimp.

Pretty good place and everything tasted pretty good. I was full. Boyfriend (after fearing he wouldn't be full) was also quite satisfied. I will return.

以前去北海道食過,幾特別,有別於傳統日式咖喱飯,唔甜帶辣,多菜少肉。香港終於引入這款特別既咖喱飯食法,SAMA餐廳唔大,約坐到20人,有30種辣度可以選擇,加3種湯底,另外可選唔同餡料,有雞肶、豬肉、漢堡、海鮮、納豆同蔬菜,另外有D小食同酒水等。我同朋友各自選左5同15辣度, 椰子同蝦湯底,餡就雞肶同漢堡。5度微辣,可食到湯底各材料的內涵。15度就偏辣,同多左D辣油浮係面,不太欣賞。雞肶比較(鞋),漢堡就味道唔錯。另外點左D小食,薯餅、炸蠔同餃子,冇乜特別,食物炸得比較燶。整體上湯咖喱飯係一種幾特別既食法,如選辣度低D較好味,辣度高的似乎只係加左辣椒油來增加辣度。

This is a small shop tucked away at the end of Gough Street. There are about 20 seats in total.

They specialized in a type of Japanese curry called "Soup" curry. As the name suggests, it is somewhere between soup and curry. Imagine a bowl of minestrone with two scoops of Japanese curry. It's a specialty of Sapporo city.

I've tried this at Sapporo Chitose Airport and really liked it. So I'm happy that there is finally one specialist shop in Hong Kong.

You could choose the level of spiciness. It's from 0 (not spicy) to 30.

The friendly waitress said that level 30 was equivalent to adding a whole bottle of chili oil in the broth.
 Apparently suitable for those who could eat raw chili with rice. Level 20 was like adding 1/2 a bottle of chili oil.

I admit I was fazed by her and did not go for level 30. I went for level 20.

I chose prawn broth and "marathon chicken" which I believe is the "original" recipe.

You could choose to have it with udon or rice. I choose rice

The Draught Sapporo behind me was extremely tempting. However, as it was lunchtime on a weekday, I refrained.

Other than the rather big chicken thigh, the whole soup curry was filled with lovely fresh vegetables which included okura, broccoli, cauliflower, green pepper and carrots.

With much anticipation, I tried the level 20 broth, which should contain 1/2 a bottle of chili oil...

To my slight disappointment (but relief), it was not as hot as I had hoped it to be. It was similar to the normal fruity type of Japanese curry with a bit of a kick. The prawn taste was not extremely pronounced (don't expect it to be like the prawn broths in Torimen or Singaporean prawn noodles) but there was still a lovely, mild aftertaste which added some complexity to the curry broth.

The vegetables were fresh and crunchy. I believe those were imported from Japan.

The chicken thigh was big and tender with decent chicken taste.

Some of us had udon. The udon looked a bit strange to me but my friends liked it. I suggest that they serve the udon (and the rice) in a bowl instead of on a plate. That makes it easier to put the contents into the soup curry.

I choose rice. The rice could have been less watery but it was still not bad. I enjoyed mixing the rice into the soup curry.

The tempura ($30) on the other hand was not good. The batter was too thick and oily. The prawns were not fresh at all. Not recommended.

Level 30:

It's $88 for marathon chicken plus 10% service charge. I was quite happy about the whole experience.

I later returned and finally tried level 30 with prawn broth!

No problem if you are used to Japanese curry and spicy food generally. Certainly less spicy than most Sichuan cuisine or some spicy ramen in town (far less spicy than the one I had in Sapporo as well.)

Worth a try if you are around the area!

Sad to say, but I think Japanese curry is the worst curry cuisine. There are of course big staple favorites like Indian and Thai curries. But I'd pick lesser known curries from Pakistan, other SE Asian countries, Carribbean islands, and various African countries before I'd pikc Japanese curry. But perhaps I'm not sufficiently experienced with a sufficient array of Japanese curries. I've mostly just eaten the stuff that comes in the retort pouch, and the stuff that comes with fried pork cutlets t

Sama, a chain restaurant from Hokkaido, promises something different: a thinner broth, less of the "curry paste" flavor and greater spice levels. It delivers on at least some of those promises.

Curries here come with a spice level from 0-30. On the wall is a board with people's photos from the "30 challenge" which I imagine is just ordering level 30 and then eating it. Last time I took such a challenge (at Brick Lane Curry House in NYC), I not only failed, but my stomach was ruined for several days. I decided to play it cautiously and order a 20 here.

I would say that 20 is noticeably spicy, but not challenging. It wouldn't be for someone who didn't like spice, but if you're into spicy food, I'd recommend higher. I think next time I will try 30. As for the numbers, they don't seem to mean too much. My wife's 15 didn't seem to have a noticeably different spice level from my 20.

Now onto a review of the non-spice related aspects of the curry:

Meat: I got the chicken. It came with a pretty meaty chicken leg that was fall-off-the-bone tender. It's certainly not the very best chicken I've ever had, but that's probably a good sign, because the very best chicken is very not good for your health. I would say it was great B+.

Curry broth: I went with the tomato broth, and after trying both my wife's coconut broth and the tomato broth I'd say I prefer the tomato broth (but she goes the other way). I really like the broth's texture, which I'd describe as "chunky," but a little more fine grained than that. "Mincey"? It wasn't strongly tomato flavored, so not like tomato soup. I enjoyed it. B

Vegetables: There were a number of vegetables, but mostly one or two of each: one piece of broccoli, one piece of cauliflower, one chunk of potato, one slice of lotus root, two asparagus spears, and maybe one or two other things. Odd stand-out: the broccoli, which was nicely charred and tender. Don't know what they do to it, but I really appreciate the touch. Great: B+

My wife got pork and coconut broth at level 15. Here's a few of her remarks: spice level 15 was perfect for her (she has a high, but not ridiculously high spice tolerance). She thought the veggies were the stand-out in the dish. She prefers the coconut broth to the tomato broth. She really enjoyed it and wants to come back. She gives it an A.

I didn't see gyoza anywhere on the menu but we'd heard they had them, so we asked and they did indeed. They are OK, but I'd say limp and a little bland. The curry bowls are big enough that you don't need these, so I'd recommend against them. C+

OK, Japan, that was a good showing. You've convinced me to pay more attention and try more Japanese curry. Final verdict: B+

豚肉野菜 $96

另一款則嚐了豚肉野菜,與雜錦海鮮相比平下,個人比軟喜歡豚肉野菜,因為那咖喱汁比較濃稠,而咖喱味亦比較濃郁,用來撈飯很棒呢;而當中的豚肉亦煮得很軟腍,而且肥瘦相間,口感特別好。

小樽吉列炸蠔

除了有咖喱外,還有多款不同的小食,當中包括了小樽吉列炸蠔、皇帝蟹腳天婦羅、名古屋咖喱雞翼、咖喱薯條等,這款炸蠔炸得香脆,亦不會很油,蠔味亦濃郁,不錯呢。

I recall having super delicious soup curries in Hokkaido, not exactly how it tastes here although I have to disclaim that I have not tried SAMA in Japan.Spice levels go from 0-30 plus 3 soup base choices? Gosh, that's a heck of choices to make just for a simple bowl of soup curry and rice hence a tough call for the indecisive me. In the end, B and I respectively went for Marathon Chicken with a spice level of 2 and coconut soup base; and Vegetarian Bear with a spice level of 3 and tomato soup ba

In the end, B and I respectively went for Marathon Chicken with a spice level of 2 and coconut soup base; and Vegetarian Bear with a spice level of 3 and tomato soup base.

Not a lot of difference in the contents between the 2 except that the chicken curry has some pieces of chicken thigh in it, errrr for 10 bucks more the chicken choice seems a good deal? Ha.

Spiciness between level 2 and 3 is basically undefinable, so why the hassle?

The interesting bit is the soup. Coconut is coconuty alright but its sour tasting too?! Tomato can't taste and see and tomatoes in it?!

I also don't like the idea of eating rice off a really shallow plate, and more so when the plate has bumpy pattern on it. Every scratching sound inevitably made when scooping the rice out from the dish made me cringe.

We have also ordered on the side 2 flower teas which have not given us the tastes they supposed to offer ie lemongrass and rose.

某年某月某日,和朋友去過北海道小樽吃過一頓湯咖喱,回味無窮。知道香港都有湯咖喱之後,躍躍欲試。見平安夜無諗到食d咩好,就去試下啦。打開餐牌,見到揀辣度,湯底同配菜,仲有大細。其實初時唔知half portion同唔half portion差幾多。後來見到隔離枱叫的,唔half portion,即是大的,飯不算份量多到食唔哂,只係舖平個碟咁。所以我點左蕃茄湯底,bb辣,雞肉湯底,大的。可能響北海道吃過,係原味,唔洗揀咩辣度,湯底同大細。我覺得北海道吃過的始終都係地道d,好味好多。而我叫了蕃茄湯底,覺得蕃茄味蓋過咖喱味,吃到最尾先適應番個咖喱味。朋友叫了蝦湯,佢話蝦湯好過蕃茄湯。蕃茄湯有點怪怪的。雞肉燉到好林,唔洗點咬就可以食到。好懷念北海道小樽超有水準的湯咖喱。

咖喱是這店的主打,而且這不同一般的日式咖喱,是來自北海道的湯咖喱。單是看,同印度人食咖喱的方法相差無幾,這是我對日式咖喱的一個新感覺。

這兒的咖喱只有一種,但可以 top up 三種不同的湯底,有蕃茄、椰子同蝦的味道,而我們二人,異口同聲地要了蕃茄做我們的咖喱湯底味道。而辣度,也是可以選擇的,我們選了2的辣度,店員說即是落了兩羹的辣椒油。

我們的其中一個咖喱,是配了漢堡扒的咖哩,不過,重點是咖喱湯汁,漢堡扒只是一個大配角,帶蕃茄味的辣汁底,同一般豉味重的日式咖喱汁有所不同,再者,咖喱湯內充滿了雜蔬,味道濃郁得黎又有健康飲食的感覺,實在是不錯。

漢堡扒,用的是日本牛肉,撈出來已感覺到他的肉質同肉香,入口,帶有可愛的粗肉粒,牛肉味也十分之強勁。配烏東的話大可以把烏東麵倒入去,像湯麵咁食,更加之惹味香口。

再來是一個豬肉咖喱,名字叫《Oink Oink》,湯底是一樣的,同樣是有雜蔬來配襯,雜蔬之中,爽脆的蓮藕片令我覺得十分之特別,因為沒有想過,蓮藕同咖喱可以這樣地匹配。

豬肉,是肥美的豬腩肉,入口時,肉磚有一層十分可愛的肥油脂包裹著,但感覺一點也不膩,入口,豬肉的不肥膩肥肉隨口與咖喱汁一起在口內溶化,會令人很滿足。而咖喱汁淋上飯,辣辣的,半稀的,很快就渺入了每粒飯之中,是一個會令像我這樣的咖喱迷開心的食品。

很不錯的新體驗,也令我對咖喱的認識又增添了新的一頁。咖喱的世界,其實是博大精深的,真的是需要品味下不同地方的咖喱,才可以了解到,不同國家怎樣去把南亞國家的這一個舉世馳名的食品,加入該國及該地區的原素而製作出全新口味的醬汁,而《SAMA》的北海道咖喱,亦很成功地,創做出他們自己及有別於一般日式咖喱的天空。

到中上環必定想到蕃茄撈通個的勝香園,之前翠如bb的《愛我請留言》更把這檔勝香園棒到上天。那陣子,勝香園的人氣也比之前更是人頭湧湧,座無虛席。可能在上環工作的關係,對蕃茄撈通已經有免疫,不覺得有什麼特別,平時跟同事吃午餐更不會想到勝香園,原因只有一個:中上環有比勝香園更好的餐廳。 從鴨巴甸街的斜路走到歌賦街,經過勝香園和九記牛腩,有間新開張的日式咖喱店叫SAMA HK。在遠處就已經被他的門口所吸引,跟同街的店舖突出,播放著輕快的日文歌曲,帶有日式的感覺,從店外到店內有都像一間木製的小屋。在店面都有以SAMA Bear作為主題。櫈以鮮明的藍色和綠色相間,不俗氣更顯得有活力。店舖細小,容納最多二十人。想跟大堆朋友來個lunch gathering,就有點難度了。不過店舖的最裡面是環形的梳化,跟五六個朋友來吃個飯都尚算可以,不過大部分的客人都是兩三個來光顧,或是食完即走的「速食文化」。看個餐牌,講真餐牌真的有點難懂,幸好朋友曾經光顧過,所以對款式都略知一二。店舖主要售賣日式咖喱,當然不吃辣也有其他日式的款式選擇,既然SAMA HK以札幌湯咖喱為名,不可不試咖喱啦。先作簡單的介紹,它們的日式咖喱

另外可以揀選不同的配料,例如雞,豬,海鮮等等,湯底分別有蕃茄,椰子和蝦;更可以選擇配白飯或烏冬。 只要跟店員講要什麼配料,咖喱辣度,湯底和配咖喱是飯或烏冬,那就ok了。

在上圖的左邊,有比較平時和SAMA HK的咖喱不同之處,在平時吃的咖喱中只有水份和咖喱兩層,但SAMA HK的咖喱最表面的一層讓人感到辣感,接著中間的一層是湯底,而最底一層就是咖喱。原來咖喱都有這樣的一門學問~

我點的是雞脾,Lv2的咖喱,蕃茄味道和配飯。不過我真的連丁點辣也受不了,雖然是Lv30中的Lv2,Baby bear己經屬最低的等級,本以為是只有超級微弱的咖喱辣味,但怎知道就連baby bear的都能感覺到咖喱的辣味。

Lv2已經有譚仔十小辣的辣度(抱歉,日式咖喱不能跟雲南米線的辣比較,但我想不到更好的詞彙去形容SAMA HK的咖哩的辣度了),對於平時吃開譚仔清湯的我,Lv2已經十分足夠,還有點過火呢。真的無法想像Adult Bear和16-30的Crazy Bear的辣度會是怎樣了。 不過中間一層的湯底味道不夠濃烈,不太吃到蕃茄味,大概是咖喱太強烈被蕃茄味道蓋過吧!

值得一提的是雞,以原隻雞脾放到咖哩內。雞脾肉質鬆軟,容易地可以把肉和骨拆開,吃得非常方便。碟內也有很多蔬菜,有蘿蔔、西蘭花、蓮藕、青椒、薯仔,另外有半隻蛋。跟一般的日式咖哩飯比較,較多蔬菜的SAMA HK感覺較健康,油膩感也好像少了點。

不過附上的白飯確實細份,這碟白飯已經是Full Portion份量,可是依然細碟,就連我都想有加飯的衝動 。朋友點的烏冬,也是有咖哩湯烏冬的效果,但同樣地烏冬也是細份。不過愛吃咖喱和吃辣的可以來挑戰一下,不過份量尚少,要吃的話要先打定底先喇!

There are two portion sizes: regular/half.
You then choose rice or udon to go with the curry.
It would have been helpful if they told me the rice was unlimited because the rice that went with the half portion was actually quite tiny so I ordered gyozas because I was still hungry.
The only difference between the regular and half is the curry portion, the rice portions are the same.
I felt that the half portion was very sufficient because it was quite salty so more rice was preferable.

The natto curry with prawn broth was amazing because the soup was very viscous but you could not eat much of it because it was really salty which was why I need more rice.
There was lots of Rosemary in it and aromatic green peppers as well as okra which made it taste like Western casseroles.
The minced meat in the curry was good too because it was fresh and didn't have any weird taste.

The tomato broth curry was disappointing because it was very sweet and tasted like Chinese style Western onion soup with pureed onions and not much tomato taste to it.
The chicken leg was smaller than my expectation but it was lovely and soft.
For this one I chose the udon which I did not like because it was chewy and sweet.
It would be great if they had ramen or soba as a choice or proper inaniwa udon which has a thinner strand.

自問從來都唔係一個愛熱鬧既人,加上好怕好多人既嘈又吵耳,所以是晚萬聖節之夜專登早小小放工去歌賦街搵食。可能因為節日既關係,即使已經去到七點幾,成條街都只係得小貓三四隻。行下行下,不知不覺已到了街尾,見店員喺外面大力推介就即管入去一試啦!呢度既裝修真係落足心機,同老闆傾開,原來呢度係日本北海道既franchise野黎,難怪呢度既裝修風格咁獨特,絕對唔似坊間果D「Hong Kong Style」既所謂日式餐廳!一打開Menu已經比佢既「Curry Soup Survival Guide」吸引左。原來呢度既主打curry係有分「Baby」、「Adult」同埋「Crazy」Bear 三種不同辣度。如果第一次黎食都係叫「Adult」搵陣。是晚因為唔太肚餓既關係,所以Curry都只係叫左Half Portion就算,希望儘量留肚去試唔同種類既Appetizer!Hokkaido Popcorn($78)︰呢個popcorn味道非常特別,可能因為係同sweet corn一齊煮既關係,popcorn裏面有少少甜甜既粟米味道,激讚!而且popcorn裏面有少少curry既feel,帶鹹味之餘又有少少甜味

一打開Menu已經比佢既「Curry Soup Survival Guide」吸引左。原來呢度既主打curry係有分「Baby」、「Adult」同埋「Crazy」Bear 三種不同辣度。如果第一次黎食都係叫「Adult」搵陣。是晚因為唔太肚餓既關係,所以Curry都只係叫左Half Portion就算,希望儘量留肚去試唔同種類既Appetizer!

Hokkaido Popcorn($78)︰呢個popcorn味道非常特別,可能因為係同sweet corn一齊煮既關係,popcorn裏面有少少甜甜既粟米味道,激讚!而且popcorn裏面有少少curry既feel,帶鹹味之餘又有少少甜味,絕對係必食之選!

Hokkaido Spinach ($78)︰因為用鐵板上菜既關係鑊氣的確十足!撈埋上面隻蛋同埋其他配菜一齊食落口一D乾口既感覺都冇,真係超正!

Campfire Scallops($108)︰Scallop非常juicy,雖然外面煎得十分香口,但火路絕對無過猛令到佢本身既海鮮鮮味冇咗,抵讚!

Crab Croquette ($138)︰專登買蟹返黎再肢解佢,然後釀返入去,重要撈埋其他海鮮,真係一D都唔簡單,絕對係考師傅既功夫。睇得出餐廳喺呢方面真係做得好用心,焗既火喉亦都剛好,熱辣辣、香噴噴之餘又唔會過喉令到表面燶晒咁,激讚!

Oink Oink($96/$56 half portion)︰豬肉同大部份日本餐廳既煮法差唔多,因為煮到好淋既關係非常容易入口,不過最特別既地方係舊肉真係非常入味,點都唔似果D「肉湯」分離、求其整熟舊肉就放落D湯度俾客食既無heart餐廳!糖心蛋方面煮到啱啱好,小小糖心流出黎之餘又不至於「污染」左D咖喱湯,用蛋漿同咖喱湯溝落D白飯度一齊食真係超正!

Marathon Chicken ($88/$58 half portion)︰原隻雞脾上既飯我諗除左茶餐廳之外,依家真係好少見喇!雖然只係half portion,但係如果連埋其他appetizer一齊order的話已經夠食有餘!咖喱湯裏面除左雞之外重有糖心蛋、蘿蔔等等既配料,十二度既「Adult Bear」辣度對於麻麻地受得辣既我已經差唔多極限喇!

食完已經差唔多8點幾,見到餐廳由一開始只係得「幾丁友」到後尾幾乎全場滿座咁濟,睇黎節日效應真係不容忽視!另外見到隔離枱既烏冬賣相唔錯,唔鍾意食飯既朋友都可以考慮下!

同場加映︰佢個toilet真係靚到乜咁,潔淨程度絕對拍得住五星級酒店既水平,超讚!!
