Came here with my old man on a thursday night, there were 2 other tables apart from us, so it was a pretty quiet evening. The place is small and cozy, tables adequately spaced apart.
We went all out and ordered:
- sashimi set: fish was fresh, uni was creamy, the salmon was especially fatty.
- tofu salad: rough and bland tofu, came straight out of a box, not chilled enough, just regular sushi soy sauce to go with it, even the spring onion and onion condiments were a little dry, tres disappointed for $80.
- cold morioka reimen: it tastes like the chewy noodles i had in Chang Bai Shan, or the Korean version of it. Comes with kimchi, half a boiled egg, and some cucumber. A good punch of spice, VERY chewy, love the texture (they also sell dried noodles at the restaurant, $78 for 2 packs)
- hot soba noodles with chicken was nice too, nice tasty broth.
- Grilled hamachi head, well, half a head, but very substantial portion, grilled perfectly, crispy skin, juicy meat, peels right off the bones.
- More sushi, ebi, amaebi, sea eel, some other fish. Nicely presented, just the right amount of rice (ie. small-ish amount and firmly made). The prawn heads were deep fried, seasoned beautifully, gives it just the right flavouring, but a tad bit oily. Eel was nice too, no scallops tonight, all sold out.
- vegetable tempura, we actually ordered mixed tempura, but oh well, they mixed it up, but then we had lots of sushi to make up for it. Batter was thin, crispy, and not too oily.
- raspberry icecream for dessert, no choice in flavours. But tasted ok.
Services was a little inattentive, they mixed up orders, forgot our maguro roll (but charged us anyway), needs repeated prompting to refill tea, took away our dishes for soy sauce but forgot to give us new ones when the sushi came for 2nd round. In fact, I'ld say it was quite poor, as all they did was lounge around and chat loudly when there was only the 2 of us left in the restaurant.
General indication of prices:
The 2-3 person sashimi set is $580, the 6-8 person set is $1300. Sushi sets are 280 (10 pieces plus a roll), 450 (18 + 1 roll). Appetisers ~$60-80. Cooked food ~$100. Rice bowls ~$200-280. Noodles ~$110. Grilled hamachi head $280.
Overall, won't come here again, better choices around for less the price. Maybe it's because sodeyama san has left the place to be culled by artificial selection in this dog eat dog world of culinary business.
